Ship Reviews

Ship nice size but had toilet issues around the ship. Inside cabins were amazingly spacious. Itinerary changed too many times before departure and after....this was third straight NCL where cancelled a tender port totally and replaced with sea days. Entertainment is getting worse and game shows are getting too predictable. Explanation of the embarkation port of Bali was very confusing because not listed as overnight, but was, and could have gotten off for night tours, but no one told us when calling for clarification ahead of time to book things. Ports were very interesting but excursions were fairly expensive thru NCL, even with the $50 credits at each port. Food was fairly good, but iced tea was horrible first half as if it was a mix of some kind, then it was brewed, maybe after many complained. How do you mess up iced tea? Specialty restaurants now ask for extra tips

This was our 2nd cruise and first cruise with NCL. Whilst the Norwegian Sun is relatively old, it was absolutely fine and we had no issues. The ship is quite small which we enjoyed as it never felt crowded Our inside cabin was perfect for us and it was a really good size. The food was fine and the drinks were good. We always got served quickly at the bar and found a table to eat quite easily. We liked the informal atmosphere on the ship. The entertainment was ok. That would have been the thing I would have liked to be a bit better. But overall it was very good. We found it good valie for money as well. Most of the shore excursions we did were with NCL and although a bit expensive compared to locally booked excursions we found them good with the comfort that we wouldn't miss the ship leaving port if we arrived back late from the excursion

This was our second time with NCL. The first was almost ten years ago on Norwegian Epic to the Canaries. NCL Sun is a much smaller ship and we were a bit anxious initially as we'd read one or two poor reviews. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. First of all our inside cabin on deck 10 seemed massive compared to some we'd been in on different cruise lines. Secondly, our All At Sea beverage package was great. We paid extra for it but it ended up being well worth it. We used all four benefits offered. Thirdly, we found the food to be great; there was a huge variety on offer. In addition to all of this, the staff were extremely obliging and always polite and friendly. Unfortunately, our itinerary was changed because of a cyclone hitting Brisbane and the surrounding area. Obviously this was not NCL's fault. Our stop in Brisbane therefore was cancelled and the following itinerary to Cairns and Airlie Beach was changed. The stop in Cairns, (4pm-4pm) was disappointingly short and we had to cancel one of our independent trips at short notice. Fortunately we were able to get onto another one and even managed to get the first one refunded, (well done Get Your Guide). The rest of the cruise continued uneventfully and we thoroughly enjoyed every day. We were sorry to disembark in Bali. The reasons for 4 stars and not 5 are as follows: Our cabin, though large, was directly underneath the Sports Bar. Around 2-3 am each night staff started moving furniture and banging cupboards etc. It was very noisy and woke us on several occasions. Also, there was a smell of sewage fairly regularly. Not sure why but sometimes the whole corridor outside stank. After a week or so, we were moved to the other side of the the ship; same sized cabin and no further problems. The tendering at Airlie Beach was terrible. It took well over an hour and at one point our boat was stationary in a fairly rough sea for over half an hour. It was extremely hot and some people were beginning to feel very sick. There was no explanation given but we learned later from the local Tourist Information Centre that it's usually like that as so many different boats are trying to get onto one jetty. NCL must have known this. A number of people booked onto trips missed them. Future passengers, be warned. There were considerable queues waiting to get the tenders back to the ship. This happened at Airlie Beach, Cooktown and Komodo. We had paid for Priority Boarding and this proved to be worth its weight as we were able to go to the front of the queues. I did feel sorry for the other passengers, some of whom were waiting for up to one hour. The entertainment was not as great as I had expected but I was comparing it with the Epic, a much bigger ship. The singing and dancing shows were good but I feel there could have been more of them. However there were a few very good individual acts too. One of the not so memorable acts was the karaoke singing which happened EVERY night in our favourite bar, The Observatory. We are not karaoke fans so this meant our favourite bar was off limits in the evening. For the most part we thoroughly enjoyed this cruise are now seriously considering further cruises with NCL.

CONS: The Norwegian Sun is one of the oldest ships in Norwegians fleet. It shows signs of age throughout the ship. Our cabin had a few issues. It was a handicapped accessible room and was larger than most inside cabins. Unfortunately, the bed was very worn out and it felt like we were laying in a hole. But the biggest problem was the bathroom. The sink faucet and the shower faucet were not working properly. When turned on, the first thing you got was scalding hot water. It took up to 10 minutes for the water to cool down enough to use. It was too easy to bump into the shower lever and instantly get scalding water. The shower also would back up at times and we had to dam it with towels to keep it from entering the room. Our cabin steward was absent most of the time. Even though we were out of the cabin early most mornings, some days he wouldn't clean it until late afternoons, if at all. PROS: The rest of the cruise was good. We have been on numerous Norwegian ships and the menu and food was the best we have ever had on a Norwegian ship. The crew, servers, bartenders, and customer service people were all great. The ship missed our first port and had to rearrange the next two ports due to Cyclone Alfred, but they were able to make new shore excursion arrangements, so everything worked out fine.
