Ship Reviews

This cruise checked most of the boxes for me in experiencing SE Europe. Firstly, the Cruise Director, Rita, was everything one could hope for and more! She always had a smile and warmth about her. Full of energy and knowledge and ever so thoughtful. I could go on about her, but I think you get the point! Another "shout out" to "Bear", the Hotel Operations Officer, although a very busy man, always made himself available for any questions or concerns. Regarding our stateroom: We had a nicely appointed deluxe balcony. It's of normal size for a river cruise ship with an additional seating area with 2 chairs and small table. I personally fine the heavy duvet comforters to be too much, but a request for a top sheet and blanket took care of that. Our room was cleaned twice daily and was immaculate. Public areas were all laid out nicely and well maintained. Enjoyable entertainment almost nightly. From local entertainment of the local dance, music, trivia and karaoke night. And a thoughtful and fun DJ/pianist. Although I didn't personally experience the exercise room, I noticed that it was well used by many when passing through to head up to the sundeck. The sundeck was nice as well with a variety of seating areas. I did notice on several occasions that empty glassware and ashtrays were not addressed on a regular basis. For example, glasses from the day before, still sitting on the tables the following day. Small issue, but worth noting. This was my fourth river cruise and compared to previous ones, the food was a "hit & miss" at dinner time. Especially, overcooked fish! But all in all there were many choices and generally quite good. The Chefs Table was excellent with a 7 course meal with paired wine. Service in the dining room also seemed to be a "hit & miss" as we sat in different areas during our cruise and didn't always have the same waitstaff. But if there was an issue and it was addressed, thank you Zach! Excursions: Several included options at each port. Lastly, Embarkation and Disembarkation was smooth. At disembarkation we had called for an Uber to take us to our hotel as we were staying on our own in Budapest for a few days. The Cruise Director, Rita, and another staff person offered to help us take our luggage up to the meeting point for our driver, it's those little extras that make a difference! Thank you!

The crew was professional and caring. We're not demanding guests, but the 2 special requests we made were provided promptly and graciously. Special shout out to Hotel Manager Shevgo (sp?). We would have appreciated more variety in the "sip and sail" beverages, or the ability to purchase an unlimited drink package. The only area that we were a bit "underwhelmed" with was excursions. The excursions felt a bit "vanilla". We would have liked more in-depth looks at our excursion destinations. For example, we felt the Vienna excursion seemed to only look at the high-end shopping areas. Several other excursions were during times when things were closed. We understand that the Easter holiday impacted shop schedules, but if we had been informed in advance, we might have made some different decisions. Local guides were good, but we did a private food tour before our trip started, and the guide provided a higher level of local "color" in Budapest. The ship excursion covering the same area of Budapest 2 days later seemed "muted" without the perspective of a local with many years of life experience in the city. Again, we enjoyed our trip, however there were areas that would have provided greater enjoyment. We certainly recognize the applicability of the saying "your mileage will vary".

Overall very good expérience. Room on second floor was larger than usual bigger ships and was modernly designed. Cruise itself went very smoothly and included excursion were well prepared and chosen. Local guides selected were excellent. Food was good but not to the level of other cruise ships such as Azamara or Regent Seven seas that we had experience before. As we had many hours on water cruising in this part of the Danube - longest portions without stops, we experienced lack of entertainment on this type of boat. Good if you are a book reader or ok to play some games but otherwise there is lots of period without visiting anything. One suggestion would have been to invite a guest speaker that would entertain the passengers on regional particularities, politics, history, etc. Chef’s table offers the opportunity for a 7 course dinner (one time opportunity as it contains about 26 seats). Overall good experience although would be more interested in 600-800 passenger boat in the future.

We've just finished what has been a fantastic 14 days cruise on the Danube. We also enjoyed our three days pre-cruise in Prague and four days post-cruise in Romania. We loved everything about our cruise but most importantly the outstanding service provided by all the staff: the ship crew, the reception staff, the restaurant and bar service, the room cleaning staff, the laundry staff, the entertainer and the wellness host. Our two cruise managers were also very friendly, available and helpful throughout the entire trip. The food was incredible from start to finish. The personnel at AmaWaterways was also very helpful setting up our vacation so that we could enjoy our time without any worries. Our only regret is that we chose too many excursions leaving us little time to enjoy the ship. Although the excursions made us discover beautiful places and learn much about the culture of the countries we visited. We recommend wholeheartedly this cruise and AmaWaterways.

The two weeks were night and day. The first 7 days were fun filled and the guests were a great group. The second 7 days were far less enjoyable. The guests stompeded the dining room at 7 pm as if the boat was going to run out of food. Despite the fact that there are no "reservations" groups reserved tables in prime locations. They did things like remove all the chess pieces from the board while a game was in progress by other guests. They signed up for regular pace tours and complained that it was too difficult for them. Several commented on it. There were not a lot of options for excursions on some days and some of the ports were unnecessary. We should have skipped Bratislava and spent two nights in Vienna. Linz was a hidden treasure and everyone complained that the description did not do it justice. As a result, many chose other excursions and were sorry. Some of the tours were very superficial and we found that through our advance research, we knew a lot more about the area than what was being offered by the guide. The staff were wonderful although the Maitre d during the first week felt it necessary to scold his staff in public. We were glad to see him go. Seeing the Iron Gates was magnificent and we loved that experience. Having the experience of witnessing the impact of political decisions on the lives of people was so important. For example seeing the electrified barbed wire surrounding the Russian embassy in Bucharest after visiting the Parliament and seeing the aftermath of a deranged dictator underscored the importance of our freedoms. Hearing the stories of our cruise director and guides about their lives during communism and revolution was important. We wish they could shout it out to the rest of the world now. People have short memories.
