Azamara Onward

Azamara Onward

Built to cross oceans, cruise along scenic waterways and dock at locations larger ships can’t access — this small ship cruising experience is unlike any other.

Ship Reviews

There is normally only one live-performance scheduled every hour in the evenings, so the ship often feels dead as you walk around in the evenings. There is very little live entertainment ever, and what there was, was often aimed for an older audience (and often wasn’t very good). Other cruise-lines (eg Oceania) have overlapping entertainment so there might be two things on at the same time in the evenings. The highlight of the entertainment was definitely the Azamara-evening performed at the cave in Gibraltar. We paid USD$2k each to go to the F1’s in Morocco. It took 3 hours to get there because the excursion left so late from the ship (and the traffic was bad), so we really only got the main race (and we also missed the prize-giving ceremony). I understand that the private groups left the ship much earlier and were able to beat the traffic. When you are spending so much you want to be at the event 7am to 8pm. We would like to go to the F1’s again but I wouldn’t trust Azamara again. We found that some of the Azamara excursions were very good (ie bike ride), but when we purchase an excursion from Get-Your-Guide you can see the rating prior to purchase. Azamara doesn’t collect feedback so you don’t know how good the excursions are (nor do they). There also seemed to be a lot of excursions being cancelled. The free bus in the ports is very good, as is the port-information that Azamara gives out about each port. The coffee shop is amazing with great coffee and excellent service. It was also good to hear the captain speak most days, and he was often seen around the ship. The food in the buffet, main dining room and the grill was overall good. The variety in the buffet is not huge so you can normally guess what dishes would be there each evening. We were onboard for three weeks but I would not like to be onboard for longer. In the mornings they closed the outdoor seating at breakfast until 8am, which seemed odd. The Brunch and Bar-be-Que are two amazing meals not to be missed. The song Sweet Caroline was released in 1969, and for some reason was performed every 2nd day on the Cruise. The entertainment team at Azamara seems to think that we are all in our mid-70’s. We went to the Broadway performance and there was very little sung that was from within the last 20-years. We preferred the music in the den and the music in the observation lounge, compared to the cabaret lounge. The service on the pool-deck was often slow. The sail-away party on the pool-deck out of Barcelona was a mess and I counted sixteen people lining up at the bar to get drinks (at one-stage that evening). The pool-deck also ran out of towel on two days, and ice-cream on one-day. They do keep the pool-deck open past 8pm each evening which is a fantastic way to enjoy the long evenings. Monaco was a poor port to disembark from as the local transport could not handle the ship docking. Taxi's took an-hour to arrive. This was our seventh Azamara cruise and overall Azamara is good (for what you pay), but our next two cruises are already booked on other cruise lines (Seabourn & Exploria).

Third Azamara cruise and frankly, only booked this because the dates and itinerary worked well. After our last Azamara experience in 2024, we weren't sure we would ever sail on the line again/ Well, the Onward has changed our opinion. First of all, this is an amazing crew led by a great captain. From the first day to the last, the crew were very friendly and went out of their way to get to know the 5 of us traveling together. The cruise director and staff were Food was fabulous the first 3 days and then slipped but we always found something. The wines offered at dinner leave something to be desired but that's a minor point. The entertainment was good and the piano player in the Den was excellent! The band in the Living Room was also consistently good. Overall, we were very pleased with the experience and even liked our first oceanview room.
