Ship Reviews

Despite the interior's appearance and the Eclipse's desperate need to go into dry dock this spring for updates, Celebrity crew came through with their excellent service. The entertainment on this cruise was outstanding--maybe the best we have experienced on any ship. Gen Maldonado, ship's production cast, Shades of Buble, and the bands and solo performances around the ship were excellent. We didn't hear the comedian or see the magic show, but it is apparent that Celebrity seeks quality entertainers. There were plenty of onboard activities on sea and port days, and the evening activity games were popular to either watch or to participate thanks to a great activities director. We had premium WiFi and it was always reliable. Cruise director Kelly injected her own brand of humor when the opportunity availed itself, especially in the game of True or False with the assistant activity director and Captain Leo. Celebrity is noted for Silent Disco nights and Full Moon Shine party on the pool deck, and both seemed popular. The main dining room food offered a varied selection, some nights better than others. I had the prime rib twice in 9 days and it was better than what I have at any upscale steak restaurant. We ate in Murano specialty restaurant (French) for the first time, and it was a 5 star experience--worth the upcharge. At the Oceanview Cafe buffet, nearly every international menu was highlighted at some point, though we only ate lunch up there twice. We enjoy the lighter fare at the Spa Cafe for lunch and breakfast in the main dining room or the buffet. The two days we had early port days, I ordered room service, and it was delivered promptly and on time, if not a few minutes early. Crew service in all areas was friendly. The only complaint I have is that our cabin steward missed making up our room during the day twice in 9 days, but he had too many cabins and no assistant to help him. Celebrity needs to correct this problem. Cabin outlets were few, a correction that hopefully will be made with drydock upgrades. Both embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly for us, although I heard some cruisers with disabilities did not receive clear directions on where to meet for disembarkation. We spent the extra money for Premium Access, only $2 a day per cabin more than the premium WiFi package, and it was well worth it. We were checked in and boarded with the same service and care that Retreat customers receive, we had an embarkation lunch in the main dining room, reserve theater seats each night, and our WiFi service is the best we have experienced on any ship. The ship's excursions were okay. We didn't go to any beaches this time, and because we booked this cruise only 2 months before sailing, our excursion choices were limited--many had sold out online. Overall, this was one of the best Caribbean cruises we have experienced because of ship entertainment and crew helpfulness and friendliness, especially in the dining room. Even though we had Select dining with no prior reservations, our hostess always seated us in the same area, so that our servers and sommelier, were able to know our preferences. Celebrity continues to be a good "fit" for us.

The crew on the Eclipse is the best. They are friendly, caring, and helpful. Captain Leo and Cruise Director Pete did a fabulous job! Pete is multitalented and gave some excellent talks. He is also a talented pianist. Captain Leo has a great sense of humor and makes even the morning announcements fun! The ship is more than ready for its trip to dry dock for both interior and exterior refurbishment. Can't wait to be back on her next winter when she is fresh and shiny! We like Aqua Class so we have access to the Persian Garden and to BLU where the food is delicious and the service is personal - the wait staff get to know you and your likes and needs and attend to you personally! It's time for some new entertainment - Topper has outlived its appeal; Amadae wasn't very good; the Broadway review was excellent as were some of the other shows in the evening. Bring back the "barbershop quartets" and some of the music of the 50s and 60s - look around at the audience to see what may appeal to the typical Celebrity cruiser. Bottom line, though, is that this is a great ship!

Comparing Celebrity Eclipse to Celebrity Reflection. I know these are sister ships but there some differences. We sailed on the Reflection in 2023 and now the Eclipse in 2025. *Sun Set Bar on Reflection is circular and allows you a great view around you. Eclipse has the bar facing forward looking at a wall. They both have the lawn arear. Reflection has the Cabana’s and large screen video to watch while sitting on the grass. No Cabana’s or large screen video on Eclipse. Eclipse has the Hot Glass Studio. Reflection doesn’t On Reflection we were able to get footstools for our chairs on the balcony. Eclipse only had them available for Retreat cabins. No big deal. We had 2 chairs and a standard height table. Most other things are the same between the ships. Eclipse does need an update. We understand that is to take place in 2025. * Our cruise started on a Monday in Jan from Fort Laudable (FLL). We arrived in FLL on Saturday to give us a buffer should there be flight delays etc. Had a couple hiccups with ours and our friends luggage getting off the plane to the baggage claim area. We flew did airlines from the same starting airport. *Embarkation check in was really easy, maybe 5 minutes. We did all the advance online check in items per Celebrity. We also got a check in time ahead of time. We did this for previous cruises and everything has been quick and smooth. Arrived at the terminal before our check in time not knowing what Monday morning traffic would be like to the port (we had a rental car). After check everyone had to wait until the ship was ready. This was about a 1/2 hour wait. Boarded ship and checked in at our muster station. We then went to the dinning room to make some changes to our dinner reservations in the main dinning room for the cruise. After that proceeded to our cabin to get our Sea Pass and drop off our carry-on's. * Cabin steward was great. After drooping off luggage we meet our cabin steward. Told her we had left a note in the room because we didn't expect to see her right then. She said a note about anything during the cruise would be great way to communicate since we may not see each other everyday. This worked perfect. *Dinner the 1st night was not the best. There were 4 of us traveling together. Wait staff was not very attentive and very slow. Not much in personality. We were also celebrating my wifes' birthday the 1st night. Again wait staff was not very impressive. Dinner the 2nd night we asked for different waiters / table. Requested the same waiters for the balance of the cruise. they were great. On the 6th night we celebrated my birthday. Totally different great experience from the 1st night. Overall food was good but very limited in choices from past cruises. * Sailed from Fort Lauderdale. Ports were, Tortola, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia & St. Kitts. We like to learn about the island / port were visiting so most of out excursions are land tours. If we want to sit near the water and do nothing we'd stay on the ship. We also book excursions thru the cruise line when they have discount offers. Don't feel comfortable going with a 3rd party because we don't want to be the ones that missed the ship because our excursion got back late. We have no desire to go back to Tortola. All other island we would. In Antiqua we did a Catamaran cruise from the port to the east end of the island. Stopped at a beach to swim. Those that wanted to snorkel could. Had lunch and beverages at the beach. Then proceeded to around the rest of the island. Got to see the complete island from the water. This was about 6-1/2 hours. We were then in Barbados for my Birthday. We did the Atlantis Submarine & Land Tour. We thought this was very good. Bus driver / tour guide was informative about the history and places. *Entertainment was OK, not over the top. Cruise Director wore many hats (Comedy, singing etc) and was good at each thing. We've seen Liars Club on other ships and again enjoyed it. Show title "Rock" was ok. You could tell the singer were not "rockers" but they did a good job. *Activates on board were many. Seems the last 2 sea days the choices were less appealing. *Cruise appeared to be mainly adults. Very few under 21. Probably because you don't have the water slides and kid things on these ships. This for us is a plus. *Disembarkation was easy. We did not carry off our luggage. Our time to leave the ship was one of the later times. We decided to have breakfast, return to our cabin and wait for our time to leave the ship. Paperwork said we could wait in the common lounge areas of the ship if we wanted. We choose not to since we had a balcony. Shortly before our time to leave the cabin steward came in the room telling us we were supposed to be out of the cabin by 7:30 because they need to do the ship turn around. We politely gathered out carry-ons and went to one of the common area. We found nothing in our paperwork that said we were to be out of the cabins by a set time. We waited a short time before we could leave the ship. Check out was quick and easy.

This was a b2b2b in the eastern and southern Caribbean. In 28 days, there was only one duplicate port, with two interim trips back to Ft. Lauderdale. The ship – This is an older ship which has been refurbished and was last in dry dock in February 2021; it will go again in April of this year. The interiors and exteriors were in good shape but it definitely needs new carpets, furniture and drapes. There were plenty of staff keeping things clean. The only walking/running exercise path runs through the sun-bathing deck chairs a deck above the pool. Except early in the morning, there was a great deal of casual traffic and sun-bathers blocking the path. It was a real safety hazard. There was no smoking anywhere inside the ship and just three small outdoor areas. The b2b process in Ft. Lauderdale was tedious but really could not be helped since there were about 300 who had to be processed each time. In general, although they really pushed the app, the communication was good with plenty of paper notifications about everything. They did not provide a listing of shore excursions or ask about debarkation preferences except on the app. And they only provided a copy of the invoice via email. When they go to drydock, I am hoping they upgrade the ‘interactive’ TV so that it actually is. They do provide desktop computers for passenger use, which is a big plus for me. The library space is beautiful but the collection was pitiful. After I made that comment on a mid-cruise comment card and suggested they send a staff member to a used book store in Ft. Lauderdale with some petty cash, the number of books increased dramatically on the next cruise. I do not know if they actually did that or if they had books in storage they just did not put out. I understand that when they have to do a deep cleaning due to an outbreak of some virus, they have to remove all the books from the shelves and clean them, so they may have thought it was just easier not to have so many in case it happened. The ports – We went to fourteen ports, had eleven sea days, plus two interim days in Ft. Lauderdale. I took nine shore excursions, of which eight were either excellent or very good. Only one was not acceptable. Celebrity has done a good job of finding or creating new excursions in these ports as a way to entice repeat customers to try them. The cabins – I had a very nice Aqua class cabin. Deck 11 had an extra wide overhang over the balcony which kept it dry and cooler. The cabin was large and comfortable with the bed next to the sliding glass door. Although it was small, the bathroom had a glass-door shower. The closet is adequate for one and there are very few drawers and clothes hangers. The cabin came with a number of spa amenities, which didn’t really interest me. Being able to eat in Blu was the best advantage. The entertainment and activities – Celebrity has an excellent array of activities on the ship every day, including port days. All of the house bands were good and there is a house orchestra for accompaniment. The production shows included very good singers and dancers but also aerialists, acrobats, and acrobatic dancers. The guest entertainment was quite good. There were a number of special musical parties and performances in other areas of the ship. The Captain’s Club events were nicely done. There were two or three enrichment lecturers on these cruises, which is very unusual for Caribbean cruises. I believe this was due to the number of elderly and/or disabled passengers. It was far higher than I have seen previously on Celebrity. The food – The menu in Blu has become uninspiring; most of the food was well-prepared and the service was top notch. It does provide table-service breakfast, which was very good. As for the specialty restaurants: Murano was exceptional as always. Tuscan is just so so. I did the Chef’s Table three times and it was excellent; it included a tour of the galley during dinner service. I ate lunch in Sushi on 5 every day of the trip. The food and service were good. The quality of their raw fish was not; that is a vendor and purchasing agent issue, not the sushi chef’s. They have added a new special dining experience: Omakase in Sushi on 5. I was there for the inauguration of it on the Eclipse and did it three times. They improved it each time. It will be a very good event. General comments – This was my fifth lengthy cruise on four different Celebrity ships since November 2021 (after the COVID break). I re-read my reports for the other four and found that I generally had the same comments about all of them. Unlike HAL, they have not cut staff or combined jobs to reduce cost; the staff and customer service are their biggest assets. The only place they seem to be having difficulty is in good chefs who can use mundane ingredients to provide good food. Celebrity is consistent: excellent in some areas, good in others, and not so good in a few. Would I cruise Celebrity again? Only in Solstice class, only Aqua or Retreat; only if they upgrade their interactive TV to actually provide info, keep the desktop computers, keep the paper communication including for shore excursions, refrain from relying on the app for communication.
