Ship Reviews

Knowing how helpful the reviews and community boards are to the Cruise Critic Community, I wanted to be sure to leave my personal thoughts and experiences on my recent transatlantic voyage on QM2. This was my first time cruising (on any line), I was traveling solo, and the crossing was recommended by a friend who had done the exact crossing the previous year. As I was unsure of what to expect, I did my research using all the tools and social media sites available to me. Prior to embarkation, I had read and watched everything I possibly could. I recognize that every individual has different needs, expectations, and filters when it comes to service and hospitality. For me, the QM2 experience did not disappoint and in many ways exceeded my expectations (perhaps that is due to the overly critical reviews I had read). A few more comments, and I will then bullet point the great, and the good aspects of my travels. There was really nothing bad in my opinion. I was a part of the Literature Festival that is hosted on board, and while this didn't determine the reason for my crossing, it definitely did not distract from any part of the overall trip, and in many way enhanced the conversations I had and the activities I participated in during the voyage. Traveling solo, while it can be daunting, I found to be easy while on board and met the most wonderful people during my time on the ship especially the individuals who joined me at my fixed dining time every evening. By the end of the crossing, I felt I had truly made friends who I would be happy to travel with again! What did I like or enjoy the most: The staff - everyone I interacted with was pleasant, eager to help, and approachable. Of course there were some who made a bigger impression then others, but that is par for the course in the service industry. Overall, Cunard has done well with their staffing, in what must be a unique field of service! I especially enjoyed the staff at the Chart Room! My cabin - I had a sheltered balcony cabin on the port side of the ship (great views of the Statue of Liberty when sailing into NY harbor). It was clean, the bed amazing, water was hot and plentiful, and the heat/ac worked perfectly. Additionally, my cabin attendant was excellent. He quickly learned my daily routine, and was able to service my cabin easily and conveniently. The Programming - As mentioned this was the Literature Festival, so there was plenty of excellent lectures and workshops to attend. In fact, I enjoyed the featured speakers so much, that many of the other activities planned didn't even make it onto my daily plan. I guess I will need to make another crossing! What I am saying is that I was never bored or at a loss for something to do. I could be as involved as I wanted to be, when I wanted to be. My fellow travelers - It was a full ship, but I never felt that the ship was filled. Everyone I interacted with were pleasant and very interesting. It was easy to strike up conversations at the bars and restaurants. I also had the pleasure of truly enjoying the other individuals who were seated at my assigned table for the dinner service. By then end of the trip we were meeting prior to dinner for cocktails, and then would enjoy jazz, drinks, and conversation post-dinner in the Chart Room. In this I feel I was very lucky! Behind the Scenes Tour - this was at an additional fee, but well worth the investment! It was the highlight of my trip. I loved seeing the various areas of the ship, and meeting the different department heads! Really great opportunity! What did I think was good: The food - overall I really didn't have a bad meal. I thought the food was good quality. It didn't blow me away, but neither did I find the need to complain or send anything back! I used room service every morning for breakfast (that was just my personal preference). I rarely used the Kings Court, and enjoyed the Golden Lion often for lunch (their daily pies were excellent). The one exception to the "good" food, was the meal I had at the Verandah! This was outstanding, and the service added to the experience! Politics - Of course, this was just the nature of the timing of the trip, but there was so much political talk on board - the lectures but also just from fellow travelers. As an American, I really needed a break from the exhausting global conversation, and sadly that didn't happen on board. (This was not a QM2 issue - just an overall observation of my experience) In the end, I was thrilled by my trip. I would do it again solo or with friends. The weather was in my favor, and the seas were smooth. There was something truly amazing about crossing into NY harbor as dawn is breaking. Yes, the ship is dated, but that is part of the experience. Its quirks adds to the charm and sense of history. For me, this was a once in a life time trip, that I hope to repeat one day!

We recently did a back-to-back voyage duo on QM2 starting with a Nov 1 northern lights experience followed by a transatlantic to NYC. It was our first time aboard this liner. We opted for a deck 5 sheltered balcony at midship for comfort in what could be rough late autumn conditions. We're very experienced travelers both on land and sea. The stateroom and ship were nicely decorated and comfortable. Very elegant and in most places, very clean. We had no complaints about our stateroom, even though there were some plumbing issues during the transatlantic portion. They got fixed pretty quickly. We had no issues with the dress codes, and were able to enjoy both the formal and informal times. There were, however, some pretty glaring issues that affected our enjoyment of both legs of the voyage. First, although the ship has put safety precautions into place regarding handwashing, etc. SO many passengers came aboard hacking and wheezing without covering their mouths, washing their hands, etc. One of our party got COVID after being directly sneezed and coughed on during a public lecture. We immediately contacted the medical office and offered to have our member quarantine. The medical officer called each day, the maitre d' called three times a day to ask us what our family member wanted to eat, and in general, the treatment was very good. I really wish that the ship had made masks available. However, even with masks and handwashing stations and antibiotic gels, there are just some people who travel who think they can flout the rules and spread disease. In particular, the older couple who hacked up a lung all over their seatmates during the astronomy lecture, and the older ladies in the buffet who coughed into their hands and then handled serving utensils were just inexcusable. I heard informally that there were several COVID cases aboard plus some folks with noro. Quelle surprise, given the lack of common sense among pax. It isn't entirely Cunard's fault, but I feel they could have made masks available. Luckily, we had them and used them, but one of us still got sick after 10 days onboard. So, cruisers, beware of your fellow pax who think they're too special to take precautions. As far as things that Cunard COULD help, we wondered why food service areas in the King's Court had nasty buckets of filthy water sitting around on the floor. It looked gross and I cannot figure out why they'd leave them there to be tripped over or kicked by passengers. Do better, Cunard. In the Britannia dining room we got sat by a window for breakfast one day and the window casing was coated with the grossest, nastiest-looking crud. It was really awful to look at while eating. On the upside, we enjoyed the alternate dining venues -- they had the tastiest food on the ship. The MDR food was largely bland, but edible. The service there was sometimes very good, sometimes extremely uneven in terms of timing between courses and coordination between sommelier and servers. We particularly enjoyed Bamboo and La Piazza. The only downside to them was that they are supposed to be "independent popup" restaurants in an alternate part of King's Court. So, why ruin the ambiance with people walking through these lovely little places to get to Princess Grill? A couple of times these louts were shouting at each other and completely disturbing those of us who'd paid for a lovely experience. The price of our cruise was entirely reasonable -- we'd saved up and took advantage of discounts available right after pandemic restrictions were lifted. We loved the look and feel of the ship, enjoyed the Commodore Club, the Golden Lion, the musical offerings, and the chance to go explore the library and other public areas. It's a lovely ship. Now, if the few rough spots could be polished out, it would be great.

Mostly found Cunards “legendary” service intact, with a few notable cracks. Our room steward, Peter, was excellent. Our waiters in the main dining hall were also quite good, but as we had second seating, we frequently found ourselves waiting excessively for desert and beverage refills while the staff OBVIOUSLY spent plenty of energy preparing the room for breakfast, oblivious to our glares and folded arms. That’s not quality service. The specialty steakhouse, Verandah, had good service and accompaniments, but the steak itself was OK-ish. Actually rather tough. One attempt at getting coffee in their coffee bar resulted in a 35 min wait for service. Afternoon Champagne Tea was very nice. The Insight Lectures and live entertainment was quite good, and we enjoyed the breakfast buffet. Lastly, the night of departure, we were told we in Group 10 of 10, last to depart, which meant we got to stand in the very poorly managed Taxi queue, causing us to miss a train, in spite of pleas to the ships staff. A sour ending to an otherwise pleasant experience. Overall, I’d choose Cunard again and do recommend it, but consider not using the specialty restaurants and be very vocal about any disembarkation needs.
