Ship Reviews

2024 South America cruise. Chose cruise for its itinerary. Oosterman proved a very pleasant surprise. Entire ship was in excellent condition. Activities - good mix and didn't feel bored for the two-week cruise. - good excursions mix for active and less active participants. Did enjoy the reiver rafting, expected lazy river and got level 3 white water rafting. Other, active excursions were also very good. - arrived at all planned ports. Service - the Navigator app on Android kept disconnecting. Another reviewer recommended to install the app directly from the HAL site. I do agree with the same reviewer that the text size is small and being grey on grey, difficult to read without glasses. Cabin - no issues with the smaller balcony cabin. Couple areas on the ship had some leaks and the ship is going to a dry dock for repairs in the spring of 2025. Dining - very good choices in the buffet and dining room. Very good service. Entertainment - good choices. Disembarkation - very quick at 3 AM

Do not use google play to install navigator! my andriod kept getting a message about not being compatible. I was so upset. pissed!! google play has a bug. the guest services "expert" loaded it using google chrome from the hal site. 3. Minutes. it has worked flawlessly since. now we can send texts immediately to each other about where we are at. Onboard. Only issue is the size of text is small so wear your readers. but it has worked!!!!! hal needs to remove the google play link. Cruise-wise, the ship is clean. Crew always professional. Activities of many varieties fill the day. if you have mobility issues, it can be a challenge. the seas were expected to be choppy, no surprise there.. Excursions have been good. Complimentary booze is adequate unless you drink more than 15 beers/shots/wines a day. save your money. again, don't use google play to load navigator. my old lg phone has now worked just fine. my wife's iphone never had an issue. tell others as it seems that bug is a pain. two thumbs up.

I sailed a solo trip from Athens (Piraeus) to Ft Lauderdale, 25 days, on Oosterdam. IT WAS WONDERFUL for me, just what I needed. I read reviews extensively before booking and some of what other reviewers grumbled about is true: the decor is quite outdated and really needs refreshing but it’s not dirty or unkempt. The ship exterior is in a constant state of maintenance with every port stop bringing fresh coats of protective paint and more. On all of my spins around the promenade deck there was crew getting things done. The promenade deck is wonderful btw, 1/3 mile around. What I loved was my Signature Suite with its large bathroom, ample closets and super comfy bed. I loved the Crow’s Nest and visited each morning for a coffee before excursions and during afternoons after a busy day on shore; it’s such an excellent place to relax. At first I scoffed at puzzles and games but then found myself spending hours working on puzzles and barging in on games of Yahtzee. Such a chill place with interesting world music, kind of zen. I loved my veranda and spent quite a lot of time there when not on excursions. On excursion mornings I had room service breakfast on my veranda in order to save time. My evening meals were divided between the Lido buffet and the dining room, both of which had a really good selection of high quality meals. My plan included 3 premium restaurants and I enjoyed the Pinnacle grill dinners and the Canaletto, the latter of which served top quality Italian with focus on grill and robust meals as opposed to pasta dishes. Very very good. The Lido dessert selection was exceptional with the Casata Siciliana being the best dessert I’ve ever had in my life. Regarding entertainment, I was so exhausted during the first 15 days of excursions that I could barely stay awake past 8 pm and couldn’t care less about what went on elsewhere! That’s where that giant TV in my room came in handy. I did really enjoy the piano concert by Adam Johnson from London and he’s a charming bar companion as well. do wish they showed films in the World Theatre at night when the venue was available. The daytime lectures were very good. I attended the ballroom dancing evenings to watch the lovely couples of all ages enjoy an activity that is clearly special to them, very touching. I don’t need a great deal of evening action so this cruise and guest demographic worked very well for me. I’m 65 yo female with many interests and the energy to explore them and my focus was on excursions. I split the excursions between HAL and Shore Excursions Group offerings; some hits and misses and sadly some cancellations. Oddly enough the excursion in Valencia, Spain was not cancelled despite the hundreds of flood deaths just days before-I felt we shouldn’t even have landed there out of respect for their tremendous shock and trauma. It was great to have the 8 day Atlantic crossing after all the previous activity, just having lovely afternoon tea and being a blob, reading or hobbling around the promenade deck. In Funchal, Madeira I had a serious fall but didn’t seek medical help in town so I wouldn’t miss my ship, instead I got to experience the ship’s full service medical clinic where I received good attention to my cuts, sprains and strains. I was thankful it happened on the last shore day. My stewards were very attentive and kept me supplied with ice, towels and pillows. So, yes, the clientele is older and sometimes infirm, but it turned out the same applied to me! But I liked their quiet energy and maturity, and self respect and self restraint often lacking in younger cruisers. I met some really awesome people on board, including the couples who helped to get me back to the ship after my fall. The service from all staff was excellent, honestly how do they remember names so well! The food was very good to excellent, the bars were nice-I loved the small Ocean Bar and their willingness to fix some special requests for me. The bar jazz trio was excellent! I don’t gamble so never went to the casino. This ship is fine for a solo traveler and I never once felt awkward being solo on the ship or excursions. I went places and saw things I never dreamed I’d see; I loved the beautiful Oosterdam and will happily sail in her again!
