Nieuw Statendam

Nieuw Statendam

Fluid lines and dramatic spaces make the Holland America Nieuw Statendam a modern beauty. The second in the line of Pinnacle-class cruise ships, its design draws inspiration from the elegant curves of musical instruments. When not relaxing in well-appointed suites or staterooms, guests will have a multitude of innovative dining and entertainment options—from Rudi’s Sel de Mer to Nami Sushi to the Rolling Stone Rock Room, B.B. King’s Blues Club, and the visually stunning two-level World Stage.

Best Cruise Ship Awards

Nieuw Statendam’s inspired design and entertainment options earned it Best New Cruise Ship and Best Mid-Size Cruise Ship awards, among other accolades. Passengers and cruise critics love this sublime ship.

Ship Reviews

First time on HAL after many cruises on Celebrity and Princess. I’ll start with the best, the food. New Statendam by far has the best food I’ve experienced on a cruise ship in years. We only did one night special dining at the steak house, it was excellent. But the real star was the main dining room. Every meal from apps, to main course, to desert was superb. The rack of lamb and the NY strip were highlights, but everything else our group of six ordered was very good. The salmon and tuna poke appetizer was so delicious my wife and I ordered a second. The dining room service was a bit lacking with some waits longer than normal. Their are no wine sommelier which we missed, and way they work drinks is strange. The waiter takes all your drink orders but they bring the drinks out separately by different waiters one at a time on a tray with several drinks for other tables. Half the party may have their cocktail, while the other half is waiting several minutes for another waiter to bring theirs. It’s a strange system, they really should bring all the drinks for the table at one time. Moving on to entertainments, it’s lacking. They had the same comedian two nights of the week in the main theater, he was not funny the first night, we skipped the second. The song and dance production was entertaining and the theater with floor to ceiling surround monitors for the set was very cool. Many reviews here raving about the music venues. We did not care for them as it was very hard to get a seat unless you arrived a half hour early and The Rolling Stones venue was WAY too loud the night we went. The ship felt a bit boring at night, much less lively then we experience on a Celebrity cruise. The cabin was nice an comfortable, room stewards were very attentive. The standard balcony was nice as it is larger then most, and they include a foot rest with each deck chair. The bathroom was very small compared to other ships with little room for toiletries. The pool area was very comfortable with nice cushions on all the lounge chairs. As usual you have to get their early on sea days for a lounge. If your into reading the library was excellent with many copies of new hard cover books available to borrow. I actually thought the library was a book store when I first entered, not the usual worn and water stained paperbacks in most ship library’s. Overall it was a very nice cruise. We probably prefer Celebrity over HAL, but would not hesitate to sail again if the price was right.

This was our fourth cruise (2nd on HAL). In general, we very pleased with this cruise. We are especially fond of the entertainment aboard the HAL ship, especially the 3 music venues. The fitness center is very well equipped, and was never crowded. We also took advantage of a few free stretching classes. We are giving this cruise a very high rating because we just like the overall "vibe" of the New Statendam and the HAL cruise lines. They obviously cater to a more elderly clientele which is fine with us, as we are both 65+. We just like the fact that the ship is "adult-oriented". We had one dinner at the Tamarind specialty restaurant and were quite pleased with the available choices and the food we had. We enjoyed our time on Half Moon Cay--it has the finest sand we have ever seen on a beach! We went on the Stingray Adventure...although it was a little corny (no I don't want to kiss a stingray!), it also had some educational aspects.

We had a great time but there were some serious shortcomings. Pros: Nice size ship Cabin stewards were great. Very Clean Appetizers and Dinner in Dining room were very good. Pool spaces were good and ample The varieties of food venues were great. Room Service Quiet relaxing atmosphere A lot of great spaces to hang Music venues were top notch Embark and disembark was easy Dining Room service was very good. Cons Drink package limit $11.00. Most name brand liquors (not top shelf) were $11.50. Really? Point of service system was a bottleneck at all of the bars. Long lines were super frustrating. Service at pools was sparse and the ship was under capacity. Buffet: Food was good but: Service/Management was awful. Can’t find place settings Can’t get your own drinks and no one came around offering them. Inexplicably running out of things like EGGS, Equal, and Bacon at breakfast. Ran out of beets and tomatoes at the salad station. Menus at the stations were incomplete so you can’t tell where anything is. Went to the Pinnacle Grille. Wasn’t worth the extra money. Would I go back? I Haven’t decided. Will want to try another line first.

We flew into Naples from DFW on 11/8/24 and spent 2 nights there in order to visit Herculaneum. Next we took the fast train to Rome for 6 nights. Saw everything on our list. We are both in our 70's and not in the best shape, but we were determined troupers and had a wonderful time exploring. We booked a shared shuttle from Rome to Civitavecchia where we boarded the beautiful Nieuw Statendam with ease. This ship wowed us in almost every possible way. The best feature of this cruise was the staff! I'm serious! This has to be the best service on any cruise I have ever been on. HAL has gotten it right after so many disappointments post covid cruising. The food was much better (consistently) than I had expected. We found ourselves looking forward to the MDR each evening. It was lovely. We spent a great amount of time in the casino and at the bars. We like to drink and gamble on vacation. We did not win anything, so of course I was a little disappointed, but hey, I knew that going in. The music groups were all good and made for easy listening. The barrage of sales and shopping activities got "old" real fast. Not a lot to do on board except relax, which is fine with me. There were lots of people my age and older. Most appeared to be in good health and enjoyed themselves. All were polite and well mannered. There were several families with children on board, all were well behaved. The only downside was the Thermal spa. I had purchased a pass for $299 for 14 days, but could not enjoy its features because: The lockers were not working so you could not secure items while you bathed /The steam room was under repair, the sauna had a bad fish odor problem and the Eucalyptus room was broken. I did complain twice to management and finally they refunded half of my money/ not sure what the other half was for, so I spent $150 on nothing? They continued to advertise the thermal spa to unsuspecting cruisers on board. Not a nice look HAL. All in all, despite the "stinky" spa experience, I would go on this ship again. We had a balcony room on deck 6 near the elevators--great location, plenty of room. We ordered room service several times--It was so convenient and the breakfasts were full orders with everything you could want and they were always served fresh, hot and on time! Please don't tell everyone because we want to keep this our little secret.

This was our first cruise with Holland America. (We have 7 previous cruises, all on Carnival.) This was also our first time to Italy and our first transatlantic crossing. I've already read a couple reviews of this cruise. I'm not sure why such negative reviews. Almost sounds like I was on a different ship and cruise from the other reviewers. Yes, things have changed since covid and yes, the quality of the cruise experience has suffered. We need to take cruising with a new expectation, not expect the old to come back. Overall, this was a very nice cruise. There was some worry of sickness on the ship and we did loose our port of call at Ponta Delgada, Azores. But the cruise, overall, was very nice. The ship was in good condition. Very clean. There was lots of space and it never felt crowded. At breakfast in the Lido and at a few shows in the world theater, there were a lot of passengers, but we always were able to find a seat and did not have to wait longer than a few minutes for food. We had assigned, early dining in the main dining room. Overall, the food was very good. Did we enjoy every dish served? No. But it was not due to poor quality or presentation, it was because of personal taste. We always were able to find seating at the main pool or at the aft, outside pool area. Again, the ship did not feel crowded. We had an large ocean view stateroom. (We usually get a balcony but thought it would be cooler weather so opted for the ocean view room.) The room was in good condition, again very clean. Our room stewart was great. One of the best we have had. Our room was on deck one, mid ship and we had no problem getting around to other parts of the ship. Elevators were pretty quick and uncrowded, except after a show at the world theater. Entertainment was mostly okay. This area has suffered since covid. But we always found things to do or events to attend. We were never bored. My only real complaint was the night of the crossing party up on the lido deck. The band from BB Kings Blues Club played. The roof was closed and the music was way to loud. So loud that the sound reverberated off the room and the singer's voice was distorted and not understandable. Our ports of call were very nice. Cartagena, Malaga and Cadiz, Spain. We did a shore excursion at Malaga, to the Mijas Village. Very nice excursion. Exiting and re-entering the ship at each port was easy and quick. Overall I believe the crew we interacted with were very nice and did a great job. Embarkation went quick. Debarkation was slowed, due to Customs and Border Protection being under staffed. We were in no hurry to exit the ship so it was not a problem for us. Again, I have read a couple reviews of this cruise in which the reviewer made it appear the cruise was terrible. It was not! People need to get over the fact that things have changed since covid. Take that with a grain of salt. You are on vacation, on a beautiful cruise ship, with the opportunity to see the world. Something many others will never have the opportunity to do. Appreciate what you have. From the other reviews I've read, I feel these people have unrealistic expectations. If you wants things your way, rent or buy a yacht and get it your way.
