MS Fram

Named after the original Fram - the most famous explorer ship of her time, MS Fram embodies her predecessor's adventurous spirit across our Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Renovated in 2022, she provides a relaxed atmosphere in which to inspire your adventure.

A favourite within our fleet, MS Fram is a purpose-built expedition ship named in honour of the Original FRAM - the world's greatest exploration ship between 1893 to 1912 and has been captained by both Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen during her years at sea.

With 119 cabins, she is one of the smallest ships in the fleet and spends her time between the Arctic in the summer (May-August), before heading south to Antarctica for the winter (November-March). Her small size, allows her to bring you closer to nature - and with key expedition features such as smaller expedition boats and Science Center, she is perfect for creating an unforgettable expedition experience.

Renovated in 2022, MS Fram now boasts a fresh Nordic look and feel across all seven decks, while exploration and learning remain front and centre to life onboard. In the Science Centre, at the heart of the ship, we have expanded the space and improved the state-of-the-art equipment onboard. Allowing for more interactions with the Science team, helping you discover more about the places you visit whilst with us.

Elsewhere on board, comfort is a top priority, so after a day of exploration you can relax in a hot tub, dine in your choice of two restaurants, or at the outdoor BBQ and catch up with your fellow guests with a cocktail in the Explorer Lounge & Bar as you watch the scenery glide past the windows. Around the ship there are numerous artworks commissioned by local artists based around the Arctic, adding an extra sense of inspiration to your voyage.

Ship Reviews

It has been m’y best trip ever. Everything has been just perfect. The Fram is the perfect ship for such a voyage. What made this trip so exceptional was not only that we had very good weather and could admire fantastic wildlife but as well an outstanding expedition team. They always tried to make an experience of every landing and wanted to please every passenger. Very keen on their field of expertise they gave us very interesting lectures while navigating and explanations in the Science center. Kayaking, Camping, Snowshoeing and fantastic cruisings with the zodiacs amongst the ice and wildlife was on the program and successfully led by the team. On the ship the food was outstanding and we had the most friendly and dedicated crew. Waiters and waitresses awaited us 3times a day with a huge smile with personalized service. A Special thanks to Arian, Waldo and Randy! We got to know the captain, very close to the guests, explaining the route and the conditions. On top of that all the passengers have been extremely nice, participating and enthusiastic about the trip. As I said - the best trip ever.

Thank you to HX and crew on MS Fram. This cruise to Falklands, sth georgia and antarctica would be our best trip ever. It had everything that made it successful, ultimate landscape, great lectures, best staff members, everything included, excellent cabins,, option B,C, D for excursions and the weather gods were kind to us but last and not least WoW animals whales, penguins, seals, dolphins My heartfelt thanks to Arianwan, Waldo, Randy in FnB, Pamela in housekeeping Alvin general area clean and Jane, George, jenna, stefan, Moira (may have name wrong -German older lady w short hair and glasses) Expedition crew who made it special with their kind words, a smile or that mischievous grin that makes our day. Nothing was too much trouble and when plan A was cancelled everyone can see why with the galeforce winds thus no disappointments. Even the galeforce winds would be a once in a lifetime experience where it can lean into it. Plan B and C excursions were still wonderful so nothing lost.

Antartica is the ultimate destination It did not disappoint. It is spectacular awe inspiring and the knowledge expertise and attention of the Hurtigruten staff and expedition team cannot be faulted. Fantastic presentations and science talks as we sailed to the antarctic peninsula. Excellent daily briefings and great landings and expeditions with snow shoeing and visits to penguin colonies but our highlight was sea Kayaking in drift ice in Antarctic silence. It was is an ethereal mind blowing experience. The ship is comfortable our cabin was great and the overwhelming feeling was of a very happy ship and crew at all levels. Food was good and varied as were the wines. We benefitted from there being only just over 100 passengers in board and visiting Antartica "early in the season' Lots of snow and ice and pristine environment. All the travel arrangements were well organised and seamless. Excellent back up plans were put in place when weather and ice did not allow landings. A rare highlight was landing at Cape Horn which is seldom possible!

It wasn't the 63 night world cruise but the 20-day NW Passage trip starting on the same date. Anyway, another amazing trip with HX on our favourite ship. The expedition team were superb, as were the restaurant and catering staff. The only slight disappointment was the lack of wildlife when compared to Antarctica but, that said, we still managed several Polar Bears, Beluga, Hump-back, Fin and Minke Whales and had some fantastic weather. Highlights were Illulisat (the ice fjord), Gjoa Haven, Sisimiut, Red Bay and Corner Brook landings. Also seeing the Northern Lights properly for the first time! The food was good (but not great) and plentiful, but we always managed to get good meals once we had befriended the catering staff. Special thanks to the scientists in the expedition team from whom we learned an awful lot about the Arctic, the Inuit culture and history, and what we can do to help our amazing planet.

It is difficult to write a review for an expedition as plans can go awry mainly due to weather conditions which happened quite frequently but the expedition team & crew dealt with it realy well. it was dissapointing that there was not much wildlife about (some of which I missed) it was fantastic to see the science being carried out and be able to join in. I knew this would not be a standard cruise so no real entertainment but this was made up for by the facsinating lectures on the wildlife and the inuit culture when we went out on the rubber boats (some planned and some unplanned) it was great to move between the icebergs & ice flows and the landings on the beaches, where great care was taken for everyones safety. The food was very high quality except they were not able to keep the plates hot so food ended up being luke warm or cold hence 4 stars instead of five Unfortunately the ship being small the cabins werer allso very small but the public areas made up for that overall a great time & experience
