While there were some things that could definitely use improvement, it was an enjoyable cruise. The staff we met were wonderful - especially Marly aka Miss Washy Washy who was also a server in the Grand Pacific. The cruise director staff kept everything fun. We did miss having a comedian onboard, but there was always something to do. Elements was AMAZING, even though it had to be stopped twice for technical difficulties and the second show cancelled. The ship did not feel overly crowded. We never had to wait too long for a drink or for seating at dinner. We even had wait staff bringing us drinks (unlike when we cruised larger ships where that was rare). Food was decent all around, though not spectacular outside of the specialty dining restaurant (Cagney's) that we went to. I was disappointed to see only one beef offering per night in the MDR - the daily steak. Now for the negatives - the public washrooms STANK! Just walking by the men's washroom when the door opened, I thought I would vomit. This needs to improve. Having game shows as entertainment was a big miss... These were not well attended. We just went to watch as the prices were a bit high, we felt. It was an ok way to pass the time, but I miss having actual shows to watch. We were in room just outside of O'Sheehan's. The location was excellent and while we did hear some noise from time to time, it was not overly disruptive. The only negative was that the window seal was broken, so we could barely see through the glass. I knew we had an obstructed view (by a lifeboat) when I chose the cabin, but I didn't know the glass would be so difficult to see through. Otherwise, the cabin was spacious and comfortable.
This was the best weekend cruise I have ever been on! The service was extremely good, the food was very good, and especially for a short Cruise the night Time entertainment was incredible!!! The only big downsides I had were that the stateroom Steward that I had was the worst I have ever had on a cruise. And the daytime entertainment was lacking. Also O'Sheehans was completely terrible both times I went. For an older ship it was very well of kept and renovated. I liked that it had a more homey feel... I've gotten so used to the ultra modern cruise ships that I forgot there were other options. The layout of the ship is very nice, with all of the specialty bars being very close to each other, except for the mojito bar which is fittingly near the Brazilian steakhouse. There were more than enough specialty dining options for such a small ship, with the Italian and Chinese both being extremely good food. The service at the Italian restaurant felt like fine dining. The steakhouse was the only part that felt not worth the specialty price tag. I did not eat at the main dining room at all, but the buffet for breakfast was adequate, with omelette stations that made it worthwhile. They also had a staff that definitely has fun, singing songs to the theme of washy washy, and coffee coffee
I booked this cruise just a few days in advance. I was pleasantly surprised and the Gem class is one of my new favourite classes for the tranquility and relaxation it offered! This was cruise #11 for me, and also the shortest and cheapest cruise I’ve ever taken. I found an insider offer for double latitude points. A balcony room came to just $800 CAD for this 5 day cruise, which is exceptional value. I found a Miami airport hotel with shuttles from the airport and to the Miami cruise port – very efficient and affordable. The Miami cruise terminal is beautiful and incredibly efficient. I left my hotel at 11am and by 12pm I was onboard eating lunch in the buffet. I was boarding group #15, but they kept moving quickly. With a capacity of 2400 passengers and the ship not being full (I would estimate maybe 80% full, they didn’t say) the Jade was very quiet and spacious. There was never a crowd on the pool deck and it was always easy to find a seat in the atrium, buffet, theatre, and main dining room. The venues are well-spaced out so too many people are never in one area. The announcements were kept to a minimum and the Freestyle daily activities were relatively short. This is definitely a quiet, spa-like cruise, not for someone who needs to be doing 40 things a day or for kids who need to be kept entertained constantly. 5 days was perfect for this experience. There was no boredom, however you do see ‘everything’ fairly quickly with it being a smaller ship, fewer activities, and only one show in the theatre per night. Thanks to the bartenders in the martini and whiskey bars – very friendly and knowledgeable and always quick service. Housekeeping was great, always prompt and kept the room clean. Entertainment was nice. The Elements show was definitely the highlight of the theatre, with all of the performers (acrobats, singers, magician) coming together on the final night. Great Stirrup Cay had two ships on Sunday (the Epic and Jade). There were plenty of beach chairs available, however line-ups were still fairly long at the taco bar and lunch buffet. The tacos are excellent! So they could use a second taco bar or more venues to spread out the lunch rush.
