Ship Reviews

This our second cruise and the first time we sailed with Norwegian. Over all the trip was amazing! This ship was by far smaller than the last ship we were on and yet still a lot to do. Our room steward was friendly and got our room cleaned quickly everyday. Once we accidentally didn’t turn the indicator that we need it cleaned it was late when we got back from port and he still asked if we wanted in cleaned up. The service staff was great at the various restaurants. Due to a mix up at the airport leaving from Philadelphia two of our bags didn’t get to Athens and Norwegian expertly worked with American Airlines to get our bags. Yes the ship is a little old and the food lacked in variety but it was still good. The we ate at few of the specialty restaurants that were ok.

This was my 10th cruise. First time with NCL. My previous ones had been on Cunard (Queen Mary) twice Atlantic Crossing, Marco Polo twice (Greenland & Iceland, Canada), Ambassador twice (Round Britain, Northern Europe), Celebrity Equinox (Lisbon - Buenos Aires), Carnival (Miami -Cancun) and a river Nile Cruise. My age now is 74. From England. I must start my review by saying Norwegian Cruise Lines has nothing to do with Norway. It is NINO in my review (Norwegian In Name Only). The ship was American from top to bottom. The bulk of passengers were from USA and NINO was geared accordingly to that market. Having said that I enjoyed the cruise as did my party of 3 others. Americans can be a bit loud but not too much so. The surprise to me was the ages on board. I would guess more than half were under 30. A few young children and people in my own age group. The rest in between. The ship did not appear crowded in any way. I had concerns reading past reviews particularly regarding catering on NINO. However, we had no complaints on board. Indeed high praise is due the exquisite Summer Palace restaurant with its inspired decor based on Czar Nicholas II and family. With my party hailing from that part of the world they felt at home in many ways, and it certainly had a luxury feel. The menu was varied and served impeccably. Congratulations all round. The buffet on Deck 12 was very acceptable and we appreciated the comfortable seating. We took advantage to sit outside most days and used the pool facilities in its quieter periods. The gym, which I did not use however I was told it was well equipped. We did not use any premium restaurants. One criticism was the poor level of entertainment in the theatre but I think like most people we did not come on the on cruise for this. Maybe the shows appeal more to Americans. Bearing in mind we traveled in June and there were ports of call every day we need a rest. Another feature lacking were any talks on our destinations but since we were well up on history and what to see and it was no real loss. A big negative to me was the Art Auction held under the banner of Park West. This was conducted like the worst Time-Share presentation with staff whopping and generally going wild in an over the top in a very rehearsed way. It was embarrassing and needless to say I bought none of the kitsch on sale. On the other hand their sparsely attended talk on Salvador Dali was fine. Just a word or two on organisation. Embarkation and Disembarking were both simple, quick andv well managed. Our cabins (inside) were well serviced. We did not take any excursions as we tend to do all that ourselves. The tender arrangements were clear and regular. The ship was well signposted on all decks and the lifts worked. We did not sit in the bars so I cannot comment. We did not use the Casino (why do cruise ships still have them?). In conclusion the cruise perfectly fitted our needs and was modern and clean in public areas. The missing parts on NINO were very minor to us. I cannot say I mixed with other passengers but they clearly looked happy as did the crew we saw. A shoutout is deserved for the buffet greeter Redelick from Philippines with his cheery manner (his catch phrase was Washy Washy, Smiley Smiley) and always good humoured. We looked forward to seeing him.
