All of our Bahamas & Florida cruises feature a whole day visit to Great Stirrup Cay, an idyllic island paradise reserved only for our guests. Swim with dolphins, snorkel with exotic fish, or just stroll the white sand beaches. This eco-fun paradise offers something for everyone!
Embarkation: Great experience. Everything was quick and smooth and we were on the ship earlier than expected. We stopped by our muster stations and then to the reservation desk. Booked our additional two nights of Specialty dining. Cabin: We booked an inside cabin and it was the smallest we have ever had. With 16 days of clothing, it took some organizing to make it work. There was a small issue with the shower not draining on the first night. We called guest services and they got it fixed. We also noticed an odor near the door of the cabin. Guest services and our room steward followed up to make sure everything was fixed. There were some indications the room had had water on the floor in the past (it is an older ship). We spoke to our room steward and he took care of it right away (steam cleaned and dried the entrance carpet). The TV in the room stopped working a few days in. We left a note and it was fixed right away. Cruise staff: Everyone working on the ship was amazing. We didn't spend a lot of the time in the ports and got to know some of the workers while things were less busy on the ship. It was great to hear about their homes and travels. Food: The food was great in all the dining venues. The steak in Cagney's needed a touch of salt, but it was there on the table to add as needed. Le Bistro was amazing. There were 5 in our group and we almost always had breakfast in the main dining room. All the food there was so good. We had wings in The Local on several evenings (buffalo sauce was delicious, but not the buffalo sauce typical in my area). Sea days: There were activities going on all over the ship on all the Sea days. The Sky is a smaller ship, but had more than enough to do. It also had a lot of great spaces to relax. Spinnaker Lounge was one of the best places on the ship. Rarely crowded and full of comfortable seating and big windows. Entertainment: The comedian was my least favorite of all the acts on the show. The rest of the shows were really good. The volume was a little louder than I like (not a problem as I have ear plugs to dampen the sound). Ports: They were all good with the exception of Disembarkation in the Dominican Republic. They had pushy people in where you collect your luggage. There was a language barrier and they insisted on taking our luggage even though they couldn't understand us. They wouldn't stop where we asked them to and insisted we had to go to the end of the parking lot. Once he was gone we found our shuttle was waiting near the other end of the parking lot. When we got to the airport another group tried to grab our luggage to bring it into the terminal. It took several times explaining we would carry our own bags to get them to leave us alone.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience on the NCL Sky. Going into the cruise, we knew that the aging ship has already been sold and will leave the NCL fleet next year. As a result, we tempered our expecations and enjoyed our time on the ship. Barring a great itinerary, I don't think we'd choose the Sky again, but it delivered an overall enjoyable experience. As always the staff was wonderful. We did feel that they were understaffed in the crossings dining room and didn't get the usual attentive and quick service that we often experience on NCL. Food options on board were good, but not exceptional (don't order the brisket!). Le Bistro and Cagney's delivered great meals. La Cucina was underwhelming and not worth the upcharge (assuming it's not part of your package). We had a balcony room and while it felt small compared to other ships we've been on, the balcony seemed bigger. The bathroom seemed especially small with just a shower curtain instead of a door. We had a problem getting the water temperature to adjust correctly. Again, we knew it is an old ship and didn't let it bother us. While there are less than two thousand cruisers on board, it didn't feel particularly cozy or less crowded. In fact, we sailed the Viva last year and it felt more intimate than the Sky. Getting on board in Lisbon was very easy. We were in the first hour and spent just a few minutes going through the embarkation process. We always do a walkoff at the end, and that was also quick and easy. The Sky has an updated internet system and we found it worked just fine on the ship. Entertainment was good enough. Having enjoyed full broadway shows on some other NCL ships, the offerings on the Sky were more traditional. Two of the ensemble singers had absolutely amazing voices and definitely delivered great performances. Again, keep your expectations in check, and the shows are good enough. If you're sailing the Sky before it leaves the NCL family, just remember to keep your expectations reasonable. It's still a fun experience, just not at the level you're going to get from one of the newer ships.
Is it an older ship? Sure, so temper your expectations - no racetrack, no laser tag, etc. - and instead enjoy the cool itinerary you will undoubtedly be on. Ours was Lisbon to Morroco to the Canaary Islands and several stops in Spain. (I do not think larger ships would be able to sail under the bridge in Lisbon’s harbor.) The food was really good. But we quickly learned to avoid the buffet and instead plan to eat most of our onboard meals in the upcharge restaurants or in the main dining rooms. Again, this is an older ship - built for a time when designated formal seating times (and not anytime dining was the norm. ) Though NCL has tried to adapt this old beauty to its current market structure, with that the resulting buffet is really small by contemporary standards. The Sky is a ship from a time gone by, which to be honest, my family and I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a type of intimacy on a ship like this that the huge mega liners definitely lack, Case in point: We sailed during Thanksgiving and though the majority of the passengers were not American, the ship had special desserts and meals to celebrated the day. Then overnight- as if by magic - the next morning the ship was bedecked in Christmas trees and holiday decorations. On our Christmas at Sea Day, the staff and crew did an amazing job conducting holiday themed arts and crafts and entertainment. The Christmas caroling with staff and passengers replete with hot cocoa and cookies in the small atrium created a fun, family environment. My adult daughter commented that it felt as if we were on a ship with our extended family. I also appreciated how attentive the staff was on a daily basis (of a 12 day cruise) and how responsive and attentive the upper management was. This was the first cruise (of about 30 or so) when the entire upper management staff stood by the exit on disembarkation day to say, “Goodbye and thank you” to the passengers. I thought that was really great, Before we left on this cruise, I had read quite a few negative comments about this ship. I don’t know what others’ experience was, but I can tell you, ours was fun and fabulous. We will always remember this vacation and I thank the staff of the Sky for a great time.
In November of 2025, my husband and I took a Canary Islands Cruise • Norwegian Sky 12-night cruise Lisbon round-trip to Canaries, Morocco, Spain & Gibraltar (was initially supposed to go to Azores, but weather caused an itinerary change) November 12 - 24, 2025 Travel style To start off, I would like to give a quick overview of our travel style which affects my reviews of each cruise. We are in our mid-50s and have now been on 21 cruises to various destinations. We tend to choose cruises based on the itinerary and price, and try to spend as little as possible. My husband loves the dark and quiet offered by Interior Rooms, and I am frugal, so we tend to be in Inside Staterooms. We do not tend to use spas or thermal suites, and limit extras. We would rather pay for individual drinks every couple of days than pay for a beverage package, but if one is included, we will make use of it. We cruise for the ports, not so much for the activities on the ship itself. When in port, we are attracted to active, busy excursions rather than beach trips or shopping. We especially like animal or culturally based outings. NCL Sky 12-night cruise Lisbon round-trip to North Atlantic (Canaries, Morocco, Spain & Gibraltar) November 12 - 24, 2025 Ship and Cabin Overview and Entertainment The Norwegian Sky was launched in 1999, refurbished in 2024 and has a capacity of about 1900 passengers with 800+ crew. Special amenities on this ship include a large theater in the aft of the ship, an observation lounge at the front of deck 11, the main lounge mid-ship on deck 6, a spa, a casino, and smaller bars and lounges throughout. There were 2 outside pools and 5 hot tubs. The Norwegian App was crucial for the sailing as they no longer automatically deliver a printed daily schedule. Check-In was through the app. 300 minutes of Wi-Fi was included on the cruise, but we did not use it much as it was rather slow and did not work well when we were close to Morocco. To access ship activities on the app, you do not need to be logged into the WiFi. Logging out of the WiFi is key for keeping track of the WiFi minutes that you have available. The ship was maintained well other than the beverage machines needing service. The décor fit the freestyle theme with understated elegance throughout. I missed the fishy carpeting on other NCL ships which allow you to determine which direction is the front (all the fish are swimming in that direction except the red one). If you are a non-smoker, it was a bit difficult to walk through certain areas without smelling smoke. The casino took up quite a bit of space on deck 7, but it was not that busy. The starboard side of the pool deck 11 offered smoking along the aft side as well. We had an interior cabin on deck 9 toward the front. On our previous cruise on the Sky we had a smaller interior room mid-ship. This one had more room and even had a small loveseat. The room size was decent, but like many of the older ships, there was only a single US outlet and one European outlet. However, there was 1 USB-A port near each side of the bed that was helpful. Storage space was limited with only 3 short drawers in the closet for us to share. Luckily, we bring our hanging clothes compression organizers (e.g., 4-Tier Travel Hanging Organizers) which fit in the closets once we moved some of the hangers. The stewards on NCL do once-a-day service and we did not see our steward for the first couple days. Sky’s entertainment offering was relatively extensive. Most nights there were 2 main shows – at 7:00 and 9:00. The Production cast included very talented singers and dancers. Additional theater guest performers included singers, musicians, magicians and comedians. The crew talent show was extremely good and the audience was enthusiastic. We enjoyed the shows and only once had a problem finding good seats. Production shows included: - "Showdown" which is where the singers 'compete' and the audience chooses their favorite. That was pretty fun, but we've now seen it twice (it was the same show in Dec 2024). Some of the song choices are not the hits for the original artist which would have been better, but in general, the show had a lot of fun energy with great dancing. - "Women of Rock" is a new show with high energy songs and it's the dancers' favorite. Some song choices here could be better as well, but in general fun if you like 70s - 80s rock. - "Broadway Cabaret" focused on 80s Broadway shows. It could have been a lot better if they did not include a bunch of obscure 80s Broadway shows. The popular songs were much more entertaining. Cruise Director Will & his staff: Will has been on the Sky for 3 years. The nightly games were actually a lot more entertaining than I was expecting. The cruise director staff did a guess-the-movie game where they performed a snippet of the movie and the audience guessed. That was extremely entertaining. Make sure you get to the Bliss Lounge early to get a seat for that one. We really like the Rock band Sonata who performs mostly in the Bliss Lounge. The Caribbean band Natural Mystic was very good as well. The solo guitarist sang a mix of pop, Latin and rock. The Latin duo had a small following of passengers. The piano player was talented, but we miss having a sing-a-long type of piano bar. This was more background music instead. I like dance classes so I attended the line dance classes taught by the cruise director staff and the Jazz and couple dance classes taught by the production dancers. We're not gamblers, so we skipped the Bingo and such, but we mostly were able to find interesting things to do. The staff was absolutely amazing! Specifically, the cruise director team, the production team, the wait staff in the Crossings and the specialty restaurants, guest services, and the executive team were all incredible. They always had a smile and asked how we were doing whenever we passed. Dining Options The Sky offered a variety of included dining options. The main dining rooms both have “freestyle” dining with no set reservations. We like joining shared tables, but for this cruise there were not many opportunities where others joined. The food in the main dining room was tasty and had a few rotating and a few standard options. We could find something interesting to eat each night, but compared to the other 4 lines we sailed this year, the menu was the most boring. For the main dining room, the only real dress restrictions were shorts and flip flops during dinner. There are no elegant nights on NCL. We enjoy The Local Bar and Grill option on the NCL ships we have cruised. This one has a pub menu from 4:30 pm through 3:00 am, so it was great for the night we had a late excursion. The buffet offered areas with different foods. It got crowded at times and the design of the area made it difficult to navigate. The buffet on the back deck was a nice reprieve offering breakfast with an omelet station in the morning, burgers and other warm items at lunch and dinner. Soup, pizza and Caser salad were offered during lunch hours at La Cocina. Additional Costs In my opinion, the Specialty Restaurants are worth the Free at Sea pricing. We enjoyed our options at La Cocina Italian restaurant, Cagney’s Steakhouse, and Le Bistro French restaurant. At the MDR, premium entrees are offered at dinner. We did not look at those options and instead stuck with the regular menu. We opted out of the beverage package, but instead bought a couple drinks when we felt like it. The bingo, spa, store and art options were seriously pushed. Those advertisement papers were still given to each room even if the daily schedule was not (for environmental reasons). The photo sales were also heavily promoted everywhere. Every night, multiple backdrops took over the Atrium area and at every port, the cruise photographers pushed us to take our photos. Passenger Makeup and Social Group Activities With this sailing out of Lisbon, the vast majority of passengers came from Canada and then from the USA with less Europeans than we expected. Most passengers were extremely friendly. These guests were on the cruise for the ports and quite a few were sad about missing the Azores due to the storm there. I personally was glad we went away from the storm because the ride was rocky enough where we were. The age range was a bit younger than many of the other cruise lines, with the majority in the 50s – 60s. There were only a handful of kids because of the November sail date and longer cruise length. The Facebook group and Cruise Critic groups were a bit active. Many excursions were set up through one of those groups. Shore Excursions We did not take any ship-sponsored shore excursions, but instead found excursions through Viator, GetYourGuide or through recommendations and we loved each one. Pre-Cruise: • SINTRA: Lovely tour of the Pena Palace on our outing to SINTRA, CASCAIS, and the westernmost point in the European continent • LISBON: Interesting city with lots of history including a huge earthquake in 1755 On the Cruise: • MALAGA: hiked up to the Gibralfaro Castle on top of the hill overlooking the port - it was worth walking up a steep stone path that was extremely slippery because of the rain. • TANGIER: toured the area outside of the city which is a beautiful forest (the King of Morocco has his summer palace here) and viewed where the Atlantic hits the Mediterranean. Enjoyed a camel ride on the beach. • TENERIFE: AMAZING tour of Teide Volcano which is the highest spot in Spain. Enjoyed the sunset with a glass of local wine and a fascinating star gazing opportunity. • LAS PALMAS: Great local tour of an island used in many movies as "Greece", "Afghanistan", and other various locales • ARRECIFE: Drive around Volcanos National Park was very awe-inspiring • AGADIR: Nice fishing and agricultural city. We liked Morocco • CASABLANCA: huge city with the highlight of the 3rd largest Muslin Mosque in the world. Very beautiful • SEVILLE: Interesting how the Spanish would use mosques and convert them to cathedrals and palaces. • GIBRALTAR: We walked to the Botanic Gardens and Zoo where I got to check out the diets the monkeys were being served. Also had the unique opportunity to look at the UK Naval Cruiser "MS Prince of Wales" that docked right next to us. Post Cruise: • OBIDOS: Nice medieval town with a castle and known for its cherry wine • NAZARE: known for large surfing waves, but very calm when we visited • PORTO: Walked around the lovely town where Port wine was bottled and historic civil wars started. • DUORO VALLEY: Took a fabulous tour to the regions where Green Wine and Port Wine are grown and produced. Gorgeous area and tasty wine. • FATIMA: Visited the 3rd largest cathedral in the world which Peter's parents visited in 1985. Favorites Key items that would convince us to take another NCL cruise: • Itinerary • Executive and Cruise director staff • Production shows • Well organized activities • Rock band • Friendly passengers • Attractive Pricing Disappointments The following make us hesitate to take another Carnival cruise: • Limited, unimpressive food options in MDR and Buffet • Lack of storage space in cabin • Being asked for extra money • Would have liked a livelier piano bar
