We read the reviews and were nervous. While we are regular cruisers (2-3 times a year), we had only sailed on one other NCL sailing (NCL Dawn in 2016) and hated it! It's been 10 years; the itinerary and timing were right, so we decided to try NCL again. I'm happy to say we really enjoyed this sailing and will be back in about 6 weeks for another! Are things perfect? No. Are they good or pretty darn decent? Absolutely. Food: This is some of the best food we have had on a cruise ship. Again, not perfect, but it was good for the most part. We have simple tastes and enjoy simple things. Loved the options of American Diner and O'Sheenan's. Loved that O'Sheenan's is 24 hours, and we're bummed American Diner was only open weather permitting and for small windows of time. We did the Manhattan dining room a few times. We didn't love the menu, but we made do and found some choices. One night, it was whiskey BBQ grilled chicken with sweet potatoes that I could have ordered every single night! Another night, my hubby ordered Cagney's filet mignon, and he was not impressed. He was glad he tried it, but he does not need to order it again on future sailings. For breakfast, we tried the main dining room, the buffet, and O'Sheenan's, and the buffet was the winner there. Not tons of choices, but the food was usually warm, and despite what others have shared, my husband liked the coffee most days. I normally had a Starbucks caramel machiatto at this point and didn't try the general coffee on board. I did, however, have quite a few coffees brewed in the room and LOVED that! Pro tip: Ask your steward on day one for an in-room coffee maker. They will supply all the fixings. I brought on individual flavored creamers, and they were perfect for me. Well, not perfect, but it was a nice touch for not having to leave my room to have a hot flavored coffee on my balcony. I will repeat this hack on future NCL cruises. All in all, if you wanted to find flaws in the food, you could, but overall, for us, basic and kind of picky eaters, we give the food options an 8 out of 10. Losing some points over the variety and availability of the buffet's operating hours. FYI - We DID NOT do the specialty dining option or any drink package. We are vacation drinkers, and it was much more cost-effective to use the OBC we received to cover my Starbucks and our alcohol purchases. We brought on two bottles of wine and also bought a bottle for dinner. We ordered a 12-pack of water bottles delivered to the room and used refillable water bottles when out and about on the ship. This approach was the best plan for us. Smoke Smells: We are not smokers, and I am very sensitive to the smell of smoke. The casino had a lingering odor that was still noticeable even during embarkation, when the casino was closed because we were in port. It was an old, lingering cigarette-smoke odor, but it was tolerable if you were just walking through the casino. We found plenty of places for folks to smoke and avoided them as much as possible. They included: Casino area on deck 7 (enclosed but still odorous); the cigar smoking area on deck 8 (enclosed but still obvious in the vicinity); Spice H2O, deck 16 (starboard, but outside so wind carried the fumes); and a part of the pool deck 15 (enclosed but still obvious). Entertainment: Happy to report that the very popular show, "Rumors," moved to the main theater so many folks could see it. We enjoyed 'Red, White, and British,' 'Burn the Floor,' and the cruise staff's hidden talent show in the theater as well. We would get there early, and they would not open the doors until about 6:15 for a 7 pm show. The place filled up for every performance. I would happily enjoy any of those shows again. Other parts of the entertainment seemed to be lacking compared to other cruises we've been on. It was OK, but a bit minimal. We are fine with a good book, so all is not lost, but we did notice it. Also, some shows or events are done in the atrium with very little seating. Staff: Mostly amazing and pleasant. There were a few bad apples, but that's just life. It did not interfere with our vacation, and we considered it a bad day on their part. Cabin: Showed its age, is a bit dated, but was fine for us. No complaints. Itinerary: We loved visiting Halifax for a day, even in poor weather. We had a great time and stayed near the ship. We did a very affordable harbor sailing for under $100 for 2, and it was super fun. Only 5 of us were on the tour, and it was a lovely, casual sail around Halifax harbor. We've been to Bermuda several times and love it every single time we visit. Others complained it was not enough time in Bermuda, but for us, it was just right. We spent the first day beach hopping and had the most wonderful time. The next day, we stayed on the ship and enjoyed the emptiness while others were off exploring. Summary: I would gladly do this trip all over again. So easy to go in and out of Boston. One of the best, relaxing vacations I have had in a while. Looking forward to taking my elderly mom on this cruise in a few weeks and seeing another perspective.
