Ship Reviews

I just got back from a short 3-night Bahamas cruise to Great Stirrup Cay aboard the Norwegian Getaway, and overall, this trip was a very pleasant surprise. The Good The ship itself is fantastic—great layout, easy to navigate, and it never felt overwhelming. The crew and staff across the board were excellent: friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Embarkation was quick, easy, and efficient, which set a positive tone right from the start. A huge plus was that we were the first ship to dock at Great Stirrup Cay. Not having to tender anymore made a massive difference. Being able to walk straight off the ship instead of waiting around for boats completely changed the experience and made the island day feel smoother, calmer, and way more enjoyable. One standout onboard was Vibe Beach Club. Absolutely worth it. The staff, drinks, and overall VIP service were top-notch. It was relaxing, never chaotic, and felt like a true adults-only escape. I also really appreciated how many quiet areas the ship has. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces where you can sit, relax, or grab a drink without feeling packed in. Restaurants, lounges, and common areas felt well spaced, and for a short cruise, the ship never felt overly crowded—which is a huge plus. The OK Dining was solid but mixed. Cagney’s Steakhouse was very good, and the main dining room was consistently enjoyable. The buffet, however, was just okay. The selection felt limited, especially compared to other NCL ships I’ve sailed. The menu at Sugarcane Mojito Bar was also pretty limited. The drinks were good, but I expected a bit more variety from such a popular venue. The Bad The biggest disappointment was the pools—not heated, and the water was cold enough to make swimming uncomfortable, which is surprising for a Bahamas cruise. Another downside was the Dueling Pianos show. It’s one of my favorite onboard activities, but there weren’t nearly enough seats for the demand. This really should have been offered multiple times instead of just once. That said, the performers themselves were excellent—high energy, talented, and a lot of fun. There was also limited amount of shows available and no real broadway style show. Overall All things considered, I had a great time on the Norwegian Getaway. It was a strong rebound after my last nightmare cruise on the Norwegian Epic. Between the smooth embarkation, improved Great Stirrup Cay experience, and relaxed onboard vibe, this cruise delivered exactly what a short getaway should—and I’d happily sail the Getaway again.

We had a great family vacation on the NCL Getaway over Christmas. Our two college age kids and teenage son say it was their favorite holiday vacation ever! We especially loved the talented performers and the abundance of evening activities. What we loved: -The Christmas show, Fleetwood Mac tribute and 90s show -Rooms were really nice (we had balcony cabins) and the housekeeping was spotless -Outstanding staff. Loved the cruise director's vibe! -Teppanyaki was great and the other food was good -New Stirrup Cay is gorgeous, but they do need to heat the pools -Gym was well equipped, but crowded -Never felt bored! What we didn't love: -There's no observation lounge in the Getaway...will book NCL again, but not this ship -4 nights is too short for us (will not do that again) -This was an extremely crowded cruise, and the Garden Cafe and pools were mobbed. I took the stairs to avoid the elevators -Nassau itself wasn't a great destination. We did an Atlantis day pass through NCL and enjoyed that, but the port itself isn't worth a repeat visit

I sailed on Getaway during a four-night December trip from Miami to Puerto Plata, DR. This was my first time sailing with Norwegian (~30F, solo). I’m newer to cruising and only have experience with Royal Caribbean, though I have extensive experience traveling in general. While I was initially underwhelmed with the ship on the first day, it grew on me and I really enjoyed my time on Getaway by the end. I’m not sure I would pick this ship if I were planning a significant celebration or a “once in a lifetime” vacation. Ship (3.5): The ship overall was nice - large but easy to navigate. I loved how easy it was to access water views on the 7th / 8th floors. The interior design of the ship was pretty average and some common areas (mainly the 6th - 8th floors) felt a bit dark. I grew up not too far from Atlantic City and the overall design (and smell) of the ship on these floors reminded me a lot of an AC resort. Stateroom (4): I booked a Club Balcony Suite with Extended Balcony. The balcony was fantastic and I would 100% recommend it. The room itself was fine but definitely not worthy of “suite” in its name - it felt like the same size as my regular room on RC’s Utopia of the Seas this summer (and was similarly arranged). The fixtures in the room were starting to feel a little dated, but functional nonetheless; replacing the wall art and TV would make a huge difference. The bathroom gained a little bit of square footage in the “suite” - double sinks, plus a rectangular shower. Food (3.5): I loved the layout of the buffet in both the food and seating areas - never too far from an ocean view. The food overall was good; I didn’t dislike anything I had at the buffet, though simple desserts without fruit or coffee flavors were lacking. Prior to sailing, I thought I would really like O’Sheehan’s and not be interested in American Diner, but the opposite ended up happening; the atmosphere and food at AD were both great, whereas O’Sheehan’s was a bit of a letdown. Savor and Taste were both nice (especially if seated by the window), though the waffles and pancakes at these locations were the worst food items I had on board. Entertainment (4): I really liked the variety of stage shows on this ship - we had three different stage shows on a four-night sailing. Syd Norman’s welcome show was fantastic, as well as the Rumours show on the final night. I loved “Bring Back the ‘90s” and even though it was a bit corny, the show leaned into it and did a great job evoking nostalgia. The new show, “The Wild Cards,” was the weakest production; the storyline and vocals were not great, and the dancers really carried this show. On-Board Activities (3): Average variety of activities that felt very low-budget. I enjoyed watching adult karaoke at Syd Norman’s, as well as some of the trivia games. A lot of the activities in the atrium felt like cheap time-killers. Howl at the Moon was minimally attended and past its prime; this was one of the bigger disappointments on board. Pool areas were ok but it was frustrating that despite having their own pool, splash area, and slides, the main pool and hot tubs were constantly filled with kids. Staff (4): The staff overall was pleasant and I found them more personable than RC’s staff. RC felt robotic, whereas NCL’s staff felt more organic in their interactions. The buffet staff in particular was very friendly and welcoming; at least three that passed my table the morning of disembarking wished me safe travels and happy holidays. The exception to this would be my stateroom attendant and guest services (see below). Stateroom Attendant / Housekeeping (2): There were quite a few housekeeping issues with my room. To start, there were clumps of someone else’s hair on the wall in my shower when I arrived, as well as a bunch of odd sediment in the toilet. The closet had someone’s plastic hangers from home left in it, as well as some old clothing tags stuck on NCL’s wooden hangers. My stateroom attendant by no means went above and beyond, and he was rarely seen; it took until late morning the second day to find him and ask for the shower hair to be cleaned up. A few people I talked to on the ship echoed similar experiences with their respective attendants. Guest Services (3): The lines at the desk were very long and while the agents were nice and apologetic, they didn’t seem the best prepared for handling issues. I didn’t receive any of the benefits that were supposed to come with a Club Balcony room and had to go to Guest Services three different times to finally get the bare minimum delivered to my room. There was also an issue where the show schedule provided by the Box Office on the first day was wrong (listed several showtimes for comedians and Howl at the Moon that didn’t exist) and the issue had to be explained to the guest services agent 4 - 5 different ways before she finally understood the error. Once this was pointed out, they still didn’t bother to pull the wrong schedules from the Box Office.
