Ship Reviews

This was our first cruise with Oceania after cruises on Carnival (1, never again), Norwegian (4), HAL (3), Princess (2) and Celebrity (1). After our last cruise on Norwegians Encore we were determined to go to a smaller ship. We decided to try Oceania partly because it is a corporate sibling of Norwegian which we have been happy with, the size of the ship and the itinerary covered some territory we hadn't been to before. When we booked the cruise Oceania was still allowing children under 18, that ended shortly after we booked the cruise so we saw very few children on the ship and it did not appear to me that the ship catered to children. We decided to book a concierge class stateroom and were very satisfied with the general layout of the room. Storage was a bit at a premium but there was adequate space for our clothing. The bathroom was the best (particularly the shower) we have seen so far. We were greeted when we arrived by our cabin Steward, Joel, and his assistant Maryann. Both were always courteous, cheerful and eager to assist us, particularly stowing our luggage which had to be opened in order to fit under the bed. The food was excellent regardless of which venue you chose, even the buffet was serving food that would have been a standout in some main dining rooms. Service in all the restaurant's and the buffet was superb. We spent a lot of time in barista's since we were traveling with a large group and the atmosphere there was attractive. We generally ate breakfast in the Aquamere and lunch at Waves Grill, again excellent food and service. One of our group is a watch collector and we spent quite a bit of time chatting with Arthur in the Diamonds Intl. store, they were great despite our not making any major purchases. The entertainment was wonderful particularly Isabel Commandeur. The cruise director was very entertaining and very present on the ship whenever we were out and about. Disembarkation was smooth and relatively quick. When we ended our last cruise it took us nearly 2 hours to get off the ship despite our being booked on an excursion (this was the proverbial straw...) this being the reason we decided to go small. It was nice to have access to the concierge lounge, we did use it a few times when we returned to the ship and wanted something cold to drink or coffee without going to a dining venue. The concierge was a nice resource also. Now the gripes. The Wi-Fi was terrible and the internet access abysmal. This admittedly is a fairly common complaint on most cruise lines but when you go upmarket the expectations go up and it should be reasonable to expect to have solid reliable internet service. One of our party had upgraded to the streaming service and he said even that was very slow. Another thing we noticed was when we were returning from time ashore there was minimal presence on shore, just cold towels at some stops, no shelter from the sun (Europe was in the grips of a heat wave) and no cold water to drink (this is something we have been accustomed to with other cruise lines). This is kind of a small ask but not having water offered to us at the dock when we had experienced that with lesser cruise lines was noticed and commented on by all of our group. One other issue I had personally was I was aware that since Oceania is a part of NCL group there is supposed to be some benefit cross over for repeat cruisers. The problem is that there is very little information provided to assist your customers to take advantage of that benefit, it almost seems as if NCL/Oceania doesn't want them to. I only learned about a week before departure how to ask for that benefit and I submitted the request (I have Gold status with Norwegian and am also a shareholder of NCL stock) and never heard anything further after the initial acknowledgment of the request. I believe my request was probably too late but therein lies the complaint, Oceania should have been more transparent about the process or even offered the benefit up front. After all, the reason for loyalty benefits is to encourage loyalty. All in all this was probably the best cruise experience we have had since our second NCL cruise on their Jade in spring 2013 (back-to-back sailings out of Venice to the Adriatic and Aegean sea's). My wife and I will be talking up Oceania to our friends and family. The best thing about Oceania is the people.

We first cruised on the Allura in January in the Caribbean. Enjoyed the ship so much that when we saw a Mediterranean itinerary we had been looking for and it was the Allura we signed up. Started in Barcelona. cruised to Trieste, Italy. Embarkation was smooth although Oceania did nothing to notify us as to which dock the ship would be moored at. It wasn't an issue since we could clearly see it as the cab drove into the port, but it would have been reassuring to know in advance since we weren't familiar with the port. Our cabin was midship on the port side of the eighth floor. Cabin condition was great, as we'd expect given the ship is only a year old. Soundproofing is a strength of the Allura. On both this and our previous voyage we heard nothing from neighboring rooms beside, above or below. Also no odd ticks, vibrations or other quirks that seem so frequent in ship rooms. Food quality is supposed to be an Oceania strength, and in general that's true. Specialty restaurants were super, but it helped that we'd had experience from January and knew the best things to order. Main dining room was good, though better for dinner than breakfast. If you an omelet, go to the buffet. The dining room ones are below par. The buffet, like on most ships, is hit an miss, some things very good, others not so much. Breakfast variety is limited. We enjoy Aquamar for most of our lunches. The Creperie and Baristas are both great for a morning or afternoon treat and pick-me-up. Entertainment was better on this cruise than our previous one. The highlight was Isabella, the Dutch winner of their version of The Voice. She performed two nights and had an incredible range, singing everything from pop to opera. Enrichment was a disappointment. We had only a single sea day and many day-long stops at historical locations. There wasn't a single port talk. Our previous cruise featured a port talk the day before for every stop. The few talks this cruise were on general topics like the Mediterranean. Also disappointing was the misinformation provided on our stop at Taormina, Sicily. It was listed as our stop, but we were actually tendered to a town below that was 10 kilometers or so away, with no foreknowledge. Dropped off, we were confused about where we were and what to do next. Ended up that to get to Taormina we'd have to take a taxi there and back. Oceania did not provide shuttle service. We've never had that happen with any other cruise line. If you are going to drop us off somewhere and not provide transportation to the stated destination, let us know in advance so we can do a bit of homework. I mentioned this to Drew, the cruise director, when we next saw him, but he didn't seem to get the point. Staff in general were great, though there seemed to be some leaving and some arriving at almost every port stop. We'd encounter some newbies in various functions who were obviously still learning the ropes, but no biggie. Our cabin attendant was amazing. Best we've ever had. She was always a step ahead. It was hot so the pool saw a lot of use. It's small, and at one point I counted 23 people in it. Not much to do other than stand at that point. It's a salt water pool, which is nice. Plenty of lounges, so even when it was crowded I was always able to find a spot. Also a lot of shade available, a real plus when the sun is strong. Disembarkation was smooth in Trieste. Quick and simple. The Allura is a fine ship. Oddly, it appears there is an issue with carpeting in public places, particularly the stairs, where the seams are coming apart in numerous places. Sad for a ship that's so new, but probably a design defect the manner of installation. Nothing that detracted from our enjoyment, but I'm sure their facilities person is trying to figure out how to address it. We wouldn't hesitate to do another voyage on the Allura or Oceania in general.

Second Oceania cruise for us, having sailed on Vista 18 months prior on a 16 day cruise. The small detail changes from Vista to Allura were appreciated. Service still very good, though with a bit less enthusiasm than previous cruise. Front desk reception staff notable and kudos for promptly responding to a mid-cruise survey issue. Accommodations: Mid-aft cabin on Deck 8 was a good location. Much quieter than deck 9 fwd on Vista, which suffered a lot from wave breaking crashes, the seas being admittedly calmer on this trip too. Modern comfortable cabin with decent amenities and excellent power connections. Already showing some wear after a year in service and cabinet/door misalignment. Only real problem was loud and constant HVAC noise from ceiling vents, NOT dependent on thermostat/fan setting. White noise but too much of it. Bed comfortable but comforter really too heavy for warmer climates. Ports: Were all good, not a dud among them - itinerary above all is still what makes us choose a cruise. We did Oceania shore-excursions in the majority and were mostly happy with those. In-cabin provided QuietVox units simplified tours a great deal. Biggest issue was some people not really being able to manage the pre-stated level of activity and thus impeding the rest of the groups progress. Food: this was the area of biggest concern. Compared to previous Vista cruise, most food universally rather bland with less flavor, less creative presentation, and meats/seafood quality noticeably less good. Cuisines you'd expect to be spicy, weren't. Only the Polo Grill felt like specialty dining this time, and the ambience at the re-imagined Jacques space wasn't at all impressive. Waves grill and Aquamar kitchen still great though, and buffet still has good variety. We sprung for the drinks with meals package, which had generally good selection, but still some significant issues getting drinks ordered and delivered in a timely fashion at meals. A la carte cocktails pricing is getting extreme though. One non-alcoholic! cocktail cost me almost $20. Spa: Had a very disappointing customer service experience after being offered promotions as part of our status. Oceania needs to make the Spa meet the same bar as the rest of the ship. Entertainment: A slight improvement though didn't notice any enrichment sessions unlike before. Enjoyed String Quartet and band in various locations, as well as pianist in the lounge. Internet: Notably far worse than on Vista. Drop-outs and huge latency quite often. Wi-fi coverage is decent throughout the ship but the internet uplink was the real problem, and the filtering sometimes random and intrusive. Logistics: Luggage tags are sent out way too late - we'd already left home when they arrived. Embarkation (good), Disembarkation (better than Vista cruise, though it's still a mystery why they call groups to leave when the exit is so backed up). No tender ports this trip, and getting on/off in port was fast and easy. We departed on time or even a bit early from every port! Niggling issues remain: very problematic closet light - how this gets past QA is a mystery to me; Vero water bottles that still don't poor cleanly and drip for anyone, including servers; sundries dispensers in shower enclosure mounted too high and very difficult to use with wet hands; one elevator out of service for half the cruise. Lounger hogging is still happening but some policing was noted this time. One group often liked to sit in the middle of the pool stairs too and block access. Also Oceania - could you make the keycard + wallet work together properly? Sometime the cards had to come out to be readable. Sometimes not. A simple sleeve would be so much easier... Other: Horizons lounge in the morning is a great choice - basically empty except for a few officers! but has coffees and pastries available. The coffee machines in several places actually had some of the best coffee. Boutique shops - really wish this space could be put to better use. We still like Oceania a lot but if the trend in food continues, we'd rethink our choices. And though we're not at all young, we seemed to be very much at the lower end of the age demographic for this particular sailing.
