This was a great experience with Caribbean Princess despite the Norovirus! I'll come onto that. 13 nights around the Caribbean was fantastic. The Caribbean Princess is just what we wanted. Its not the most modern ship in the fleet but with Princess its does exactly what you'd expect. Provides a great service and great holiday. Boarding at Fort Lauderdale was seamless and we were soon underway. With the 8 ports of call its difficult to pick out all the highlights. But Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are always wonderful places to be. I rented a Hobi sail boat in Princess Cays which was great fun. And I did my own private kayak trip In San Jan. The local guide here was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, on day 4 or 5 came the news no one wants on a cruise - they had Norovirus on board, and a number of people were ill. Now I can't really believe I was surprised because - as usual - most people seem to think it is acceptable to walk into any dining restaurant and completely ignore the sinks and hand sanitiser - or EVEN as you leave the bathroom - COME ON PEOPLE. Thankfully Princess cruises were to the rescue. They immediately implemented a well-oiled plan to try and stop the spread. No more self-service in the buffet and staff at every door asking you to wash your hands as you entered dining. Strangely enough this caused a queue at the sinks. Pity there wasn't one on day 1. Even with this, some still walked straight past and seemed surprised when challenged by staff or other guests. The next day I witnessed exhausted staff washing every surface. Handrails, walls, floors, tables, chairs, the gym... the list goes on. All I can say is thank you Princess - we didn't catch it and I put this down to your fantastic efforts. One problem was - why we needed to be woken up each morning by the captain telling us we had arrived at port and then, soon after, guest services telling us we could get off. This was from the very loud speakers in the corridors not in our room. Everyone on board is on holiday. We arrived in most ports before 7.30am. I did not want an alarm call telling me I had arrived at a place that I already knew I was going to. There is the Princess app, there is the Princess patter (still a ridiculous amount of wasted paper) and the huge screens around the ship on every deck - all telling me what is going on, and when, and how. Please stop waking people up who want a lazy morning. However, despite these annoying roll calls, every single member of staff went out of their way to be friendly, polite and helpful, at every opportunity and I cannot praise them enough. Our cabin was spotless every day and it was clear our room attendant was working double time cleaning everything else as well - as were the waiters. The singer in Crooners in the late evening wasn't the best (typical pub style singer). A shame as we have had some great singers on other cruises but the majority of the entertainment on board was good and at times great. Saving sun beds is clearly normal these days. The same people in the same places every day gives it away! Perhaps they ask for the early morning calls so they can get up and put their towels out. Nassau was the only port who would not allow us off the ship due the illness on board. That is their right I suppose, and they were having elections and wanted to keep everyone safe. We didn't miss much as we would have only been there till 1pm anyway Port Canaveral was our disembarkation Port - this was as seamless as arrival - we never stopped moving from getting of the ship to going through immigration. Princess never fails to deliver - and this time they went above and beyond.
Have cruised several cruise lines, but our first time on Princess. Have been to all of the stops on our itinerary before but enjoyed them just the same. We had dinner in one of the main dining rooms each evening. The selections were varied each night and I like to order things I would never try at home. I never ordered anything that I didn't enjoy. From fish to steak, sides and deserts. The food was great. Breakfast was at the buffet or in the dining room if we were up early enough. Buffett offerings were all you could want. Burgers made to order by the pool were very good. Our serving staff for dinner was excellent. Head waiter Zosimo was a gentleman with a great sense of humor. His assistant Armondo was all smiles and very friendly. The dining room manager Vasco stopped at our table often and was friendly, funny and a gentleman. The first morning we at at the dining room we had Edwin as our waiter and we made sure we sat in his area each morning after. He had a great sense of humor and a very positive attitude. Our favorite bar tender was Red at the Wine Bar. His service was one step ahead of you all the time and he was a lot of fun to talk to. The only negative to our trip and complaint against the staff was the lack of wait staff around the main 2 pools. The lines at the 2 bars were always long because the staff was almost non existent. Even on days at sea, and our cruise had 2 of those, there was one waiter per pool taking drink orders. I didn't pay for the drink package but if I had I would have been even more upset with this lack of service. The ship is older. Things were very clean for the most part. If you want a shinny new up to date ship, this isn't it. We had an interior room and our only complaint was a lack of outlets to charge things and plug in hair dryers. There were no plugs by the night stands for our bed. The entertainment was very good, better overall than most other cruise lines I've been on. From the singers, dancers and comedians we were always entertained. At breakfast one morning, at the buffet, we sat next to a young couple. We talked with them for quite a while and found that they were the aerobatics act for our cruise. Omar and Valeria are from Mexico and they are the nicest people and even more impressive athletes.
We are experienced cruisers having done about a dozen cruises on different lines. This was a 12 night cruise to the Caribbean. We arrived the day before embarking because we come from the west and the time difference is difficult. Embarkation was very easy, maybe 20 minutes in the green line at 11:00 am from drop-off to the bar on deck 7. We spent two days at sea going to Bonaire then worked our way back to Fort Lauderdale. We were in a mini-suite on the Dolphin deck, in the aft section. This was our first mini-suite and we quite enjoyed the extra space and the larger balcony. The room was nice and comfortable. We were unclear about the status of the balcony when we booked - uncovered, partial cover or fully covered. It was totally open so when there was rain or intense sun we couldn't use it, and we spend a lot of time on the balcony staring at nothing hoping for an occasional flying fish or other sea creature. We learned we prefer a covered balcony. The ports were good, although Guadalupe seemed a bit sketchy, and we did not have an excursion there, just wandered. We did Princess excursions at most ports that were informative and fun. The guides were excellent. The ship itself shows a little wear but is in great shape. The maintenance crew seemed to be constantly at work and never in the way. We used the walk-in dining. The dining room service was excellent. The food was consistently good, but there were a few dishes that were so-so. Our waiters made good recommendations and seemed to know what was best. We liked the smaller portions so we could enjoy an appetizer, main dish and dessert without feeling over-stuffed (I'm a guy and my gut tends to grow a "cruise baby" if I eat too much. One of the waiters told me it wasn't a cruise baby but a "one-pack"). The pizza, burgers and hotdogs were high quality when we missed a lunch or needed a snack, and the International Cafe was always available with sandwiches, snacks, soup, and dessert. We also like the diversity of foods offered at the buffet. It seems even the pickiest of eaters should be satisfied. The staff and the service was superb, some of the best service we have had from the room steward, to the waiters, to the bartenders. One bartender remembered us, learned our names and greeted us (maybe we went there too much). We particularly like listening to the musical entertainment which was very diverse with very talented musicians. We did not go to the theatre shows. The ship was quite crowded making it difficult to find a seat unless you arrived early. We seemed to eat between shows and could never make it when seats were available. Disembarkation was unusually easy for us, except our luggage was not in the designated zone so we had to look around for it. My wife bought a piece of jewelry that required us to go through customs. We were escorted there which meant we jumped the exit line, met a nice customs officer and exited the terminal, all in about 10 minutes. So buy something that goes through customs for a quick exit. The bottom line is that we enjoyed another great cruise, our third on Princess. We are not overly critical because our guiding philosophy is that any day on a cruise is a good day.
