Ship Reviews

I thought this cruise was a great value. Food was way better than our expectations. Service from every crew member was phenomenal. We enjoyed each port and obviously the glaciers were breathtaking. I know it's an old ship but I don't feel like you feel it unless you are purposely seeking the imperfections. The ship never felt crowded, disembarkation and embarkation were both a breeze. Even tendering in Skagway was relatively painless. Glacier viewing without a balcony on the outside decks was manageable due to the the relatively lower number of passengers. Ship was smaller so got pretty close to the glaciers. Some cons were that the fitness center gets crowded on sea days, pools while are a plenty still get filled with kids. Hot tubs are always taken, especially by kids. The entertainment skews retirement feeling like a lot of game shows and trivia but even we in our early 30s still partook with pleasure. The shows were not bad, considering it's just 45 min and free. Comedians were funny enough and nice mature change of pace.

This was our first Princess cruise and I was extremely impressed with the staff. EVERY single person we encountered was friendly, helpful and appeared to love their job. The food service was excellent in each place we ate. Their were very good choices for dining without having to buy an extra package. Our cabin (balcony) was very clean and the bed was very comforable. Our cabin steward was great.. we rarely saw him but he definetly did a wonderful job while we were out and about. The only employee we were not impressed with was the salesman who basically did infomercials for each port. He would lure people in with raffles and a card he would initial that would entitle you to get a "free" pair of earrings or something in a jewelry store. He was obviously reimbursed as he was wearing samples from each store to show you. The only thing free was high pressure for you to buy over priced jewelry that is not from Alaska. no free earrings or anything else. I would not trust any of the cruise season pop up jewelry stores. I have a friend who lives in Juneau and she confirmed this. The entertainment on the ship did not interest us much, but on an Alaskan cruise the real show is the scenery on the inside passage, which was incredible. I loved seeing sea otters!! When sailing open sea it was time for a massage! We did some great excursions, not booked with the ship, which is frowned upon by the infomercial guy. We had great luck with Viatour and had an epic kayak tour with whales in Ketchikan. Our river rafting tour was cancelled in Juneau so we found a great company on the dock to take us on a float plane. and then we took a bus to Mendenhall Glacier/ then to a whale watch boat in Juneau, and still had time for dinner with our friend. We made the most of that day!!! And in Scagway we booked a bus trip to White Pass and then to Yukon to cross the suspension bridge with many photo ops!! We had plenty of time to shop for souvenirs in Scagway. When we got off the boat in Whittier we boarded a train that we thought would take us to the McKinley Lodge in Denali. NOT so. We found out our rooms would not be ready until 5:30pm or so and our luggage would be sent on to that lodge and we should keep with us our valuable and medications. We were dropped off in the middle of ?? who knows. We were given a choice to take a bus to a local tourist town or take a bus to the lodge where we could hang out (not in our room). It was annoying. But the tourist town had a company that would hold our bags with valuables and medication for $2 while we shopped around town. It was a place geared for the busloads of tourists to be dropped off for the day. There were a few authentic local artisans there and lots more touristy gift shops. The Why Knot BBQ place had the best food we could find. We ended up booking a plane trip to fly around Denali and land on a Glacier. When we got to McKinley lodge we had dinner at 20320 which was good. Service again was excellent. Bus drivers and shuttle buses drivers were wondeful. We got to see Denali from tree house! We were unhappy with having to leave early second morning to take bus to Denali lodge where we were lucky ones to have our room ready, but had no luggage till dinner time. This place had the thinnest walls ever and tired rooms. Towels and bed were good! In the morning we skipped the included preplanned 7am 5 hour bus tour and took a shuttle to hike a trail and see sled dogs on our own. Denali lodge was a tourist factory. We met lots of untrained waitstaff and it was a let down. Again we were unhappily to have to leave Denali early to get on bus to go to Fairbanks and to a gift shop then the preplanned included riverboat since our rooms would not be ready till later. That was an ok experience. It was convenient to have an airport shuttle from the princess hotel in Fairbanks. Overall.. if I were to plan this trip again I would most definetly take Princess cruise on inside passage, avoid all jewelry stores, take a train from whittier to Anchorage where I would rent a car or anything other than take a bus separated from my luggage. I would also pack much lighter and make use of laundrymat if neccessary. Layers were def a good idea, although we had the most amazing weather ever.
