Ship Reviews

We had a wonderful cruise to Alaska on the Ruby. The layout is very much like all of their other ships, though this one is on the older side and doesn't have all of the features of the newer or refitted ships. We had high seas heading up to Alaska but the crew warned everyone ahead of time and were on point with assistance when people needed it. The ship overall was very clean and easy to navigate and staff were friendly and welcoming. This ship has a promenade deck that actually does go all the way around the ship, though stairs are required to access the bow. Activities- there were a wide variety of daily activities but we mostly like trivia. We had a great time with the activities staff and all of their trivia offerings were fun and thoughtful. The Explorers Lounge was a great location and had the best bartenders on the ship! Food-The service was great as usual, however it seems like there are not enough servers in the dining room for dinner service. Dinner often felt rushed and the staff were running around, literally, constantly. The food was good but not amazing. The buffet is VERY SMALL and gets really crowded, especially if it is cold outside. There were often no tables available and lines inside the buffet. The food in the buffet was not exciting. The ice cream and coffee place by the pool was great and had soft serve, ice cream sandwiches, fancy ice cream desserts and specialty coffees. One day up on deck near the grill they had a ramen station that was good. The Salty Dog Gastropub was good, if you could figure out when and where it was happening day to day. Our cabin was nice, well kept and comfortable. Our balcony was huge and had 2 nice chairs with foot stools and a table. It is partially covered which was great when it rained during scenic cruising. At one point near the end of the trip the toilets on our floor stopped working. It was resolved very quickly after we called guest services. It happened again the next day and was fixed quickly again. Bring a pen! There are no pens in the rooms and you need to fill out a customs form. The comedy shows were overall very good and this time there were some 18+ comedy evenings that were fun. 16+ and up OK with an adult, but you might not want to do that! The naturalist and other location-specific talks were engaging and we left with a lot of information and heard fun stories. The naturalist also guided whale watching some afternoons from the buffet area and deck and that was fun. The arcade is expensive and the games aren't very fun- mostly trying to win prizes. I did get a lot of enjoyment out of the duck claw game though because you are guaranteed a duck. The arcade is right off the smoking side of the casino, so it can be a little smelly. As usual, the spa tries to upsell everything and there are a ton of "events" around jewelry and watch sales. We tend to ignore them but some people seem to be into it. Disembarkation was awful for those of us walking off with our luggage. The line went all the way to the back of the ship and then back. So we had carried our luggage down 3 flights of stairs, then to the back of the ship, then got in line and dragged it to the front again all while making sure people didn't barge in front of us. I don't recommend walking off on your own, it was miserable. Better to wait as long as possible for the crowd to dissipate. They let so many off at once that we couldn't even get an Uber and had to take a very expensive taxi ride home.

We have sailed on Ruby Princess several times in the past. This cruise was 16 days to Hawaii from San Francisco. We purchased the Princess+ package as we normally do. We feel it to be a good value as it includes our gratuities, Wi-Fi, all-inclusive drinks (not top shelf) and more. Overall, it was a really good cruise. Excellent Cruise Director and Activity Staff. They were very fun, talented and approachable. We really enjoyed the Hawaiian Ambassadors, Enrichment presentations, and the live music Duo. Our tour of the 4 Hawaiian Islands was fantastic. All the staff were friendly, professional and hard working. Our favorite shows were when the Hawaiian youth dance school came on board at one of the ports and preformed a Hawaiian Hula show. 10 out of 10. Those kids were amazing! The other passenger's Ukulele and Hula show was also very good. Disappointments: 1) Changes made to the medallion OceanNow app. We used to be able to view an extensive Food/Beverage menu on the app. and place your Food/Drink orders almost anywhere on the ship. Your orders would then be delivered to our location. However, after contacting Customer Service, we discovered the OceanNow program has been changed. You can now only use the service in limited locations (basically Pool Deck and Piazza areas), during limited hours (11am-9pm), and the menus have been cut to bare basics for food/drinks. The service is no longer available in the Explorers Lounge or Club Fusion where it is needed the most. Club Fusion, where most game shows and trivia are held, was standing room only most of the time. If I went to the bar to order a drink people would attempt to take my seat. 2) There appeared to be a staffing shortage in all areas of the ship. Our room steward did a great job was always rushed to complete tasks. Many times, it was difficult and time consuming to flag down bar waiters in the Lounges to take and fill orders. Not enough staff in the standing room only crowds. There were not enough Bartenders causing lines. Even our MDR wait staff, who did a good job, were rushing around to several tables causing a drop in the normally excellent service. 3)The food on this cruise didn't seem up the normal excellent standards. We do not like that the steak entree has been removed from the everyday 'Favorites" menu in the MDR. Now there is only a Salmon or Chicken Breast entree offered on the 'Favorites' menu. We found that most of the foods in the MDR and Buffet were bland and lacked flavor. The Salmon which I ate several nights was dry and bland. One member of our party is Lactose Intolerant, which was recorded, but there were very few meals/desserts options available to them. We dined one evening in the Salty Dog Gastro Pub. Food quality and service was not up to par. Felt like the servers forgot about us. Not attentive as to checking that we needed more water and drinks. My appetizer was delivered the same time as the entre. I could hear others complaining about the wait time. The buffet offered a Nacho Bar but did not have melted cheese available. The salsa for the nachos was bland, watery, tasted like cut tomatoes. in my opinion, the cruise line needs to hire a Mexican cook/chef to make their Mexican foods in general. The European chefs don't understand true Mexican flavors and spices. 4) We did not like that there was only one comedy show the whole cruise. We normally enjoy the adult comedy shows, and it was very disappointing that more shows were not scheduled. The main Production shows were nothing new. As a returning cruiser I have seen these shows several times and they need to be changed. Between noon and 4pm each day there seemed to be a lack of entertainment. It seemed apparent that Princess has made cutbacks. I don't care for the changes made to the Plus and Premium packages. Or the changes to the OceanNow which was one of the things that made Princess unique. Even experiencing these disappointments, we still enjoyed the cruise.
