Ship Reviews

If you're comparing cruising to the “old days” (pre-pandemic), you’ll probably be disappointed. Having said that, we still had a great vacation: Hospitality / Service: The staff on this ship were all very friendly. We thought the service was good, particularly in the main dining room. Nonetheless, the larger ships don’t have that “boutique” service feeling that cruising used to be known for. Our room steward was very nice and the room was clean, but they clearly have many more cabins to attend to than they used to. If you remember the days when your room steward addressed you by name and seemed like they were almost always around to provide personal service, that’s not the way it is any more. Its much more like a land-based hotel from that perspective. Main Dining Room Food: Overall, we felt the food was pretty good. Again, if you’re comparing it to the days when even the “mass-market” cruise lines offered four to five course meals, you’re going to be disappointed. Menu’s are more basic and have been consolidated. The overall dining experience is more ‘streamlined’. However, some the menus were really quite good (e.g., Royal night with Prime Rib, or Lobster Night with real Maine Lobster which was a treat, Escargot was great too). Other menus really missed the mark. The Italian night stuck out as the biggest dud. The menu was basic (no veal or anything like that). I had the Chicken Parmesan and it was disappointing; honestly, I’ve had better T.V. dinners. The dessert menus are also much more limited and basic than they used to be. However, on the whole, I felt the food is still better than NCL and on par with Disney. Specialty Dining Food: We tried 150 Central Park and we were not impressed with menu or the quality of the food. Chops was very good and a wonderful experience overall eating “outside” in Central Park. We tried “Hooked” for lunch and it ended up being the best meal we had on the ship, highly recommend the steak and lobster! Entertainment: The entertainment was excellent on this ship. I’m not a huge fan of musicals, but “Hairspray” was really fantastic (the cast, the sets, all first rate). We also really enjoyed the “1977” ice skating show (my kids loved it). My kids also loved the splash pads and slides. We really enjoy the comedy clubs on ships, and this one was great. Our only complaint is that the comedy show didn’t change all week so we just went once. Other ships we’ve been on rotated different comics through their club all week, but not on Symphony. That was really disappointing. Kids Clubs: My two boys (4 & 6) enjoyed the kids clubs and always wanted to go back, which is all you can ask for. Having said that, if you’ve ever been on a Disney cruise, you just can’t compare the level of investment and quality of the kids programs on Disney to Royal. The quality of the clubs, the activities, and the staff are head and shoulders above Royal – its not even close. The other thing that makes it difficult on Royal is that they are only open certain hours, so when we were dropping our kids off for an hour or two after dinner at 7:00, there was always a huge line (and that was never the case for us on Disney). Crowds: At times, the ship felt very crowded – particularly in the Windjammer for breakfast or on the pool decks on sea days. This is pretty typical of most ships we’ve been on, and given the number of people that sailed on our cruise, overall, the flow of passengers felt ok. Overall Value For Money: The ships certainly have more to do now, but Royal’s prices have climbed significantly over the last five years. At the same time, there have been meaningful cutbacks to service, food and charging to things that used to be included. Cruises are no longer the “no brainer” that they used to be from a value perspective. Having said that, our family had a good time and we’ll be back onboard another RCCL ship again.

Pros: Amazing ship with lots of spaces to disperse the many guests on board. The MDR wait staff was phenomenal and the food quality was good. The ice show, aqua show, Hairspray, and Flight shows were fantastic and we also enjoyed the live music around the ship such as the High Cs band, jazz combo, Temperature pop band. Cons: Needs more variety in the buffet from day to day. Felt like the same thing. Wish they would do game shows and trivia in larger venues such as Dazzles as it was very crowded and sometimes didn't have seating in the Club, Boleros, and Schooner. They charge now for stuff that used to be free or is free on other cruise lines such as popcorn, pickleball intro, escape room, etc. The parties started very late, most in the 11pm-12am hour. The Crown and Anchor event was not worthwhile, prefer more personalized and smaller event like in Celebrity Captain’s Club. The pool bartenders constantly served drinks in the hot tub against the posted rules, which meant there were dirty glasses along the edges and people stay in hot tubs indefinitely leading to overcrowding. While the ship offered daytime activities such as laser tag and ice skating, the reservations were all full before the cruise even started. This ship no longer provides the printed daily planner to read about special events, time zone alerts, etc.

We went on the Allure about four years ago and mentioned 3 reasons I chose this ship: 1) High diving 2) The Beef on Wick in the Central Park cafe 3) Ice skating. Only the Beef on Wick disappointed. The roast beef four years ago was exceptional. Perhaps, the best in my life. This was a major disappointment as the grade of the roast beef was much lower. I tried it three days and gave up. Same mediocrity. However, Sorrentos pizza was excellent. Better than the Allures and far better than that on the Celebrity Reflection. The initial high diving show, Hiro had too much Japanese karate movements and not enough high diving. Disappointing. However, DO NOT miss the second show which was just high diving, acrobatics etc. Wonderful. Both ice skating show were excellent. As a former figure skater, and a brother at the professional level, the figures were very well done and would have earned high grades in competition. If you would like to avoid possible Norovirus (named for Norwalk Ohio where the viral strain was first seen), I would recommend the Central Park Cafe where the food is given to you. We did not eat in the Windjammer but chose this take out area instead. Entertainment: Hairspray was excellent. Essentially Broadway tour production quality. Do not miss. Flight was also very well done. Both great productions. We appreciated the Jazz group. They played songs from the American song book: Harold Arlen, Harry Warren, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern. A lovely singer and exceptionally good musicians. There also was Big Band music. For some reason much better their first day than second. Two electric guitars: would MUCH rather have two more horns. Electric guitars are annoying in general, but should NOT be in a Big Band. Our cabin was spacious and clean. We had a balcony on Deck 10. AVOID Deck 4 and 6, maybe others. There was a sewer smell. Very unpleasant. The comedians one from the Hub and the other Chicago were very good in the large auditorium but in the comedy room, not as good. The food in the MDR was much better than we thought it would be. The last four dinners were terrific actually: Dover Sole, Jerked chicken, Maine lobster, and filet mignon. Guest services was managed well. We very much enjoyed the tour of Bahamas excursion we took. A bit disappointed there was only one turn down service. Two complaints: My wife and I have accessibility problems and sit in the handicap areas at the entertainment venues. Some people congregate behind us and talk during the show. This happened at every show. RCI should encourage their waiters or staff to shoo these people away. They may not think they are being rude but they are. Two: I have light sensitivity and HATE it when the spot light goes out to the audience. I close my eyes and miss part of the show. If I am slow and my eyes do not close in time, I have a headache the rest of the night. Is it really THAT important to send the light into the audience?
