Grandeur of the Seas

Whether you choose to wander the tropical shores of the Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean, adventure is always guaranteed on Grandeur of the Seas®.

Grandeur of the Seas is the ultimate Caribbean adventure. It’s the perfect blend of unique experiences onboard and unbelievable shores, like the lush islands of the Southern Caribbean, the crystal-clear waters of St Maarten, and Mexico's aquamarine sinkholes that make Grandeur of the Seas one of the best intimate cruise ships for families and couples.

Ship Reviews

We booked a guaranteed suite. We were 'consecutive cruisers' so returning to the ship in Tampa we were directed through the premium passenger route which was very fast. Our room was spacious with a large bed, a sitting area with a sofa and two chairs. It was good to have a Nespresso machine. The large bathroom featured a bath tub, unfortunately with a shower curtain. The bath tap/shower controller worked well. As a one-way cruise to Colon, Panama, the passenger demographic was tilted towards Spanish-speakers. The menu options and music reflected this. As suite passengers, we were given a table next to a window in the MDR. Sadly, our waiter was rather stern and gave us a lengthy lecture about giving 10s on the review questionnaire. We know from a waiter we met previously that crew who get lower scores have their pay cut, so I realise how important the feedback is. We didn't warm to this individual so we took dinner in Windjammer most evenings. Breakfast in Windjammer was overcrowded and it was difficult finding a table. There were several time changes on the passage resulting in most people going in the last hour of service. We found lunch very busy – it looked like large family groups took up residence for a long lunch. Dinner, going in after 7pm (so avoiding the early dining rush) was calm and pleasant. The food quality was mostly acceptable, but it's really factory cafeteria standard. I had one undercooked burger which was pink on the inside. On the Argentine barbecue themed evening, my pork kebab was so overdone that I gave up chewing the first piece and left it. The desserts were full of cheap, processed ingredients like aerated fake cream. Ports of call were all worthwhile – more affluent destinations in the Caribbean. Grand Cayman was tendered, however, Royal hired local tenders which were roomier and more stable than using the ship's survival craft. The main theatre schedule didn't appeal – really not interested in jugglers, comedians (American) or acrobats! The musicians were mostly good. SeaNergy, from Mexico, played in the central atrium, starting the evening with ballads, followed by latino bangers. It was like being in a parallel universe seeing everyone else in the venue singing along with the songs they performed. The Grandeur of the Seas Orchestra was top class. We enjoyed their big band performance and their Earth, Wind and Fire set. Smaller ensembles from the orchestra played jazz/latin sets on several days. These weren't accurately described in Cruise Compass, so were under-promoted. We always managed to find two sun-loungers together on deck. We had to retreat in late morning when the activities team imposed their games on everyone who was on deck. If you want to do a scavenger hunt on deck, that's fine but don't shout a commentary over the PA system. It defeated my noise-cancelling AirPods! Crew were competent but not as warm and respectful as we have seen on other ships. Not all said 'hello' when passing in the corridor and a few barged through narrow gaps on deck, in Windjammer and in the corridor, around housekeeping trolleys. My assessment of the suite experience is that it falls way short of MSC Yacht Club and it isn't premium enough to justify the cost over a standard balcony cabin.

Overall it was a good experience. We have been on the Granduer once before, so we realize that you have to balance your expectations. As a repositioning cruise it was a tremendous value, paying less than 50pp per night for an interior cabin. The ship is small, almost a yacht like experience. You can get from forward to aft in just a few minutes. It is quite intimate, yet very seldom felt overcrowded. The staff works hard to make sure that you are satisfied. On several occasions we asked for exceptions or accommodations and they bent over backwards to meet our needs. We were very pleased with the food in the MDR and Windjammer, therefore we didn’t feel it was necessary to pay for the optional dining. The entertainment, theme nights were high spirited, fun and engaging. There were plenty of trivia and game show options throughout the ship. The Cruise Director and her team was outstanding! Also, the main acts in the Palladium were entertaining. This is not a party ship, unless you go to the disco, most activities shut down around midnight. As mentioned, you have to balance your expectations. As the oldest ship in the RCI fleet it is quite dated. There are no modern features in the stateroom, outlets, updated bathrooms, TV , etc. The HVAC system is probably at its maximum capacity and struggled to maintain an optimal temperature throughout the day and night. In addition, the cabin and hallways frequently smelled of cigarette smoke, especially at night. Several of the public bathrooms were out of service and had a strong sewage smell, which I believe is also the result of an aged ship. The gym was more than sufficient and there was enough equipment for a quick workout. Embarkation in Tampa was literally, drop off to ship in less than 10mins. Disembarkation was quite messy, there wasn’t much guidance given and many fellow passengers were confused. There may be other things that could have been better but they didn’t distract from the overall vacation experience. Would we go on the Granduer again? No, first it will now sail out of Panama and San Juan. In addition, we’ve been on it twice and there are plenty of newer ships in the RCI fleet. If you do go sail on her balance your expectations, weight the value and if it makes sense, have a great time!
