Ship Reviews

This was our second cruise within a On the ship, we occasionally encountered crowds, especially on our sea day at the pool deck. It was a workation for me and there had always been areas that were quiet to get work done. The ship is well maintained and we constantly saw cleaning staff around the ship. The restrooms in the public areas were really clean, and tables were cleaned regularly, so even during busy times we always found a seat to eat at the popular venues like Sorrento's. There were a lot of families, mostly from the US and Canada. It was quite balanced, and felt like a good mix too. There were a lot of teens. I firstly thought why a curfew was needed, but I realized it was there for a reason. It didn’t seem to be well enforced though. While I don’t mind them hanging out in places like the Arcarde where they don’t bother anyone, I certainly do when they disrupt the night. We were woken up around 2 am once since a group of loud teens ran through Central Park, where our cabin was located. This was audible even with locked door. A security guard once had to kick them out of the Solarium Hot Tub at night. We chose a park view balcony on deck 11. The cabin was also spacious. The storage amount was great too, the only negative thing was the USB and power outlets on the reading lights did not work which couldn’t be fixed during our cruise. One thing to note is that during pool party hours, there’s a lot of noise and even with locked doors, the music is bursting into your room. Overall we really enjoyed the cabin. The steward was always present and approachable during the day, the room was clean, the bed comfortable and we got surprised several times with new towel animals! The food was quite good in the MDR. While not really impressing, there were only a few dishes we didn’t like and were also recommended some by our waiters. We had my time dining and planned it according to our showtimes. One of the first things to do once on board is to walk to the desk and catch reservations for dinner. Since we had shows and the Solarium reserved, we couldn’t do it in the app but the MDR staff was helpful and assigned us tables in the same area every night. The service on both cruises was outstanding in the MDR! The waiters were attentive, quick when we needed to head to a show, and gave us enough time to enjoy when we had time. One thing that impressed me the most was our UT waiter was working at the Windjammer entrance the second day during lunch, and we came pretty late. Even after telling probably thousands of guests to wash their hands, he still greeted me by my name „Hello Mr ...“, which was impressive. One thing we did not enjoy was the Solarium. For some reason, the food didn’t taste as good as on a previous cruise on Ovation there. It was still okay, but not impressive enough. The windjammer food also was a hit or miss, with some dishes we did not enjoy. Johnny Rockets was a great choice for breakfast, despite having a wait which was not too long due to good staffing and quick waiters. They did not close at the closing time but accepted new guests until that time, and we felt never rushed. Also, the Indian food in the MDR was sub par. Not that it didn’t taste good but the level of spiciness did not meet our expectations. The lamb was announced as “spicy” which was a 2/10. The korma was kinda bland. When we asked a Indian waiter he said that the dishes fit the taste of the passengers and that they can’t offer spicy food. We had a good laugh it. We had the Refreshment package, which was great for us since we only occasionally drink. The mocktail menu was good and the bartenders were always creative and helpful in making the cocktails of the day non-alcoholic. One thing I noticed was the availability of non-alcoholic wine. In the solarium, the waitress told us it is not available. They should really make it a standard item in all venues that serve main meals, given the rising popularity of non-alcoholic alternatives. While all bars were busy during our cruise, they were staffed well and therefore wait never exceeded one or two minutes, except the Cafe Promenade in the morning, but the staff there was amazing and quick too and made sure we started our day in a good mood. The staff overall impressed us! No matter which devision, they were always friendly, approachable and seem to love their job. I even got a duck from one of the cleaners I met inside the elevator! I observed some Karens, giving the crew a hard time, which was really unnecessary. A thing we noticed was that they seem to be under some kind of pressure for good reviews, given how often they mentioned the survey. This shouldn’t be the case. One thing I really disliked was the spa staff. They were friendly, but seemed under a harsh pressure for ancillary sales. When we tried to check out the gym right after boarding, we were approached by solicitors several times, trying to sell us spa services. This is against the „royal standards“, which specifically state that first encounters are not the right time for a hard sell and that upsells must come at the right time, not distracting guests. It was really disturbing. This was completely different with the photo staff: they were always present and friendly, but never pressured us into taking photos when we showed no interest. That’s the way to do it! The best time to go for the popular activities is during dinner times. For the zip line (you can go as often as you want once in the harness) there was almost no wait and it was fun! The abyss was also great fun (and a good way to reach your milkshake at Johnny Rockets) but it got busy during the sea day. Guest services were great! They always had an answer ready or found one within a short time. We had a billing problem with a wrong charge for a drink and it was solved in our favour in less than a minute. The shows were top notch. We did not get any seats in advance but since we boarded early, we secured seats for our desired time slots thru the app, I would suggest to do it right away after boarding. Our favourite was the aqua show, which was simply impressive! The water was moving all around and they almost cancelled the show but went on. Wow! A not to miss. The ice show was also amazing with a great cast. The All In show was great, and we enjoyed it too! Great cast. I was able to participate as a contestant in the Name That Tune show so I can’t give a rating from a viewer’s perspective. The entertainment team did a great job briefing us, making us less nervous and giving us a great time participating! I was also able to see what it’s like down the stage, which was cool. Once again, great cast! The daytime entertainment was also fun and a lot of the passengers were taking part, which made it a great experience. Karaoke was always fun at night and the crazy quest was not to miss. The escape room which comes at an extra charge however was fun, the instructors great but it was only about 20 minutes. Compared to other escape rooms on shore I would say it was not worth the price. RC got a new license for “the price is right”. They advertised the game as “everyone is a contestant” and that you could even win a car. Turns out, not everyone is a contestant, but only those who pay. We were given no info on what the rules and odds are to win the car. Only prices which start at 15 USD for one chance for the car. Don’t get me wrong, watching it was very entertaining, but there should be an option to participate without payment. For those inerested, these were our estimates: 1000 usd and some casino free play were handed out to contestants in the main game. The capacity of the theatre is about 1400, with about 95% load factor and at least 20-30% actively playing for at least 15 USD per play. A real cash cow for RC. The rules to win a car are: 3 participants spin the wheel with 20 options. Whoever closest to 1 USD gets the price. The audience gets one chance to bet on what the 3 contestants get on their first spin. Whoever gets 2 rights wins 50 USD (a lot of people won). This is a 0,7125% / 57:8000 Chance so there must be a lot of money in the pool. Those who guess 3 amounts correct (a 1:8000 chance) get “the chance” to win a car on stage. So I would say it is not really worth it, but 15 USD do not hurt. It’d just be nice to make the rules more transparent without having to buy in blindly. One thing we loved was the live music! All the bands and musicians were great. The showband was amazing! The music in the schooner bar was also great! Nassau: we did a self guided walking tour which took about 3 hours. We felt like the city mostly lives off tourists, and the traffic is horrible. It was still nice. After that we enjoyed our time on the ship. Embarkation and disembarkation was efficient. We could only get a 1 pm check in time but tried to show up early. There were lines before opening the terminal so we did a walk around the port and came back 15 mins later to walk right on board. The terminal was not busy at all so it was a breeze. We got to reserve all desired shows once on board but forgot there was laser tag, which we had missed. The porters aggressively asked for “a small donation” even before we could grab our wallets. But this is out of the hands of RC. Disembarkation was quick and efficient, with biometric entry. For the last day, I booked the space center transfer. The guide and organisation were great, but we lacked time at the center. We got in at 9.30 and had to be at the bus by 1.30. I barely managed to do the highlights, but I would still consider it worth it. Unfortunately the discount was gone when I booked so it was 199 USD. If there’s a discount I would do it again. We had a great time! While sometimes crowded, there’s enough space to do whatever you like - adrenaline, relaxing, music, entertainment, or get some work done in peace. In our view the cruise line offered a good balance of all of them. The staff seemed well trained, passionate and really did a great job.

Here is our review of the February 16-20th sailing of the Utopia of the Seas. This review is our opinion and our experience. Whenever we do a review, I have to say that if you do not agree with our opinion, you are welcomed to write your own review. This review is to give some knowledge for future passengers , not to debate your experience. I sailed on Utopia back in November and was very impressed with the 3 day trip. This time we were on a 4 day trip, not over a weekend. We spent the night at the Towne Place Suites at the Port, which we think is the best hotel in the area. Had a wonderful breakfast at the Southern Charm restaurant in Port Canaveral and arrived at the parking garage about 11:00. Having booked this cruise only 3.5 weeks before sailing, our official boarding time was 1:30, but we took our chances of boarding early. There were plenty of porters at the parking garage and within 3 minutes we parked and went to the terminal. We had to wait about 5 minutes in line to enter the building because security was backed up. In total, it took about 20 minutes from that line to clear security and then we went to the check in desk. We were allowed to board the ship immediately. There were no boarding groups to sit around for. So even if you have a specific boarding time, you will probably be able to board much earlier than on your boarding pass. I was not able to make show reservations a head of time with our late booking, so we immediately went to Bolaros to get reservations. An “ask me” worker was standing outside Bolaros and was able to get us reservations to the Ice Show and the Signature show, but not the AquaShow. Expert hint: as soon as you board the ship and sign on to the Royal app, you can make your own reservations on the app. You need to be on the ship’s app to have this advantage. The workers in Bolaros have no more advantage than you do on the app. This gal also showed us how to get on to our purchased Wi-Fi. We then proceeded to explore the ship since this was my husband’s first time on it. We had a quick lunch before the rooms were ready at 1:30. Our bags arrived almost immediately and our cabin attendant introduced himself. After unpacking, we went to the fun Sailaway Party on the pool deck. We had anytime dining in the main dining room on deck 3. This dining room opens at 6:30. While we never made a dinner reservation, the two times we went to the main dining room, we never waited more than 5 minutes to be seated. Compared to other cruise ships, the service is very efficient and we were done eating within an hour. This first night, we had two shows planned….the Signature show and the ice skating show. The Signature show is a variety act with the singing of cover songs, dancing and aerials. Very talented cast. The Ice Skating show is unique and would be better without this weird guy who climbs on stacked chairs. On Day 2, we paid for the Royal Beach Club and it was wonderful. Having been to Nassau too many times and most always staying on the ship, I will now look forward to docking there. The Beach Club is fantastic. Expert hint: try to get on the first ferry to the Club. The ferries are located as soon as you walk off the ship’s pier. Being the first people to enter the club, you can get the first row of chairs and umbrellas on the beach. We opted for the Family Beach. Drink service from local employees was immediate and very friendly. Expert hint: If you have small kids, beware that the water level drops off after only a few steps into the surf. Get a life preserver before you get on the beach. For example, an adult after a few steps into the the water is up to his waist. Of course, tides will vary this, but be aware. Also, this is not a walking beach as the trucked-in sand is very deep and you sink into it. The food shack had a great burger and fries, the bathrooms are clean and water stations are available. We decided to walk to the Chill Beach area. To do so, you walk past the pools. The pools are very long and that day crowded with a DJ playing typical EDM. (We like the very good band on the family beach side better playing Jimmy Buffet type music). Chill Beach was just reopened after a storm in which there was quite a bit of beach erosion. While the Royal Beach Club is less than half the size of Coco Cay, it was worth the expense and added another beach day to our sailing. There is one drawback that we found with our day. When you leave the ship to the Beach Club, the ferries are right after the main pier. But on your return, the ferry drops you off at the shopping area of the port. You have quite the walk to the ship. There are golf carts to take you to the ship after the shopping area, but from the ferry drop off point to the golf carts, it’s a good 10-15 minute walk. We did not see any alternate transportation through the shopping area, but that’s not saying it’s not available. Tonight, we had last minute reservations at the hibachi restaurant and we had a great cooker named Warren. He was a walking encyclopedia of oldie music and he challenged us to name the various songs’ artists. So much fun and the food is plentiful and delicious. Since we did not have reservations for the AquaShow, we went to the stand by line. We got there 65 minutes before the show and there were already about 20 people in line. Ten minutes before the 8:30 show started, they allowed standbys in. The stand by line was past the carousel. I don’t know how many got in, but we were able to get center seats about halfway down. The ship was rocking tonight, so the very high divers and tightrope walkers were not able to perform, but this show is very, very good and I highly recommend it. It’s worth the hour wait if you do not have a reservation. When we had “downtime” we went to the casino and tried out luck on the lowest minimum ($15) blackjack tables. Friendly dealers and helpful to those who do not know how to play. Also, in the Royal Promonade, they had a late night high energy show on one hit wonders. So much fun. Day 3 was our Coco Cay day. Again, we were one of the first people off the ship and we were able to secure front row at South Beach. South Beach is where most of the action takes place from volleyball courts to sand paddle ball and basketball. Lots of kids here, a good crispy chicken sandwich and when the tide is low, you can walk to various sandbars. There is also a swim-to bar. Another great beach day with plenty of umbrellas for shade. While the beverage service was not as good as the Beach club, the walk up service was quick. You can take a tram from the ship to the island, and then an additional tram to where you want to sit. Expert hint: for less crowds at South Beach, go to the beach that is to the right of the main beach (if facing the water). Less used bathrooms and a quieter experience. There are so many areas of Coco Cay. Study up before your trip on the map where you would like to sit. Research will pay off in Coco Cay. Dinner was in the main dining room. Very nice server named Adrin who gave us an origami parrot. We checked on the AquaShow tonight and the high divers and tightrope walkers were performing. It’s actually anxiety provoking. We also did the Name that Tune production show and the Crazy Quest. Both were great. Late night in the Royal Promonade was a trip down the decades and its music. Complete with costumes and dancing…one has to compliment the cruise director staff. Our day at sea started with a massage and it’s the luck of the draw who your get as your therapist. My husband’s massage was great, but mine was only OK. They are expensive and I would never get again without finding a quick sale online. The spa is large and before we got to the waiting room, were were peddled four different services. After the massage, the therapist comes back in the room when you are dressed and peddles what you need to buy from her. This hard sell is not appreciated after a relaxing spa treatment. After lunch we went looking for a chair in the shade, but that is almost impossible after noon. This is one big drawback of the ship. The lack of chairs in the shade. There are no umbrellas so you need to be under a ceiling area for shade or in the solarium. The adult solarium is quieter and fine, but toasty after some time there. Expert hint: If you do not want to handle the crowds of the Windjammer buffet, there is a mini one in the solarium. Adults only. Disembarking is a breeze. We left the ship at 7:30 am (you must vacate the cabins at 8 am and they start making this announcement about 7 am in your cabin). From the time we left the cabin to the elevator, went through customs (no passport needed as it’s all facial recognition) walked through the terminal, got in the elevator in the parking garage and entered our car….14 minutes. They do offer breakfast, but all dining rooms close at 8 am and we heard they rushed you through the meal. We really enjoyed our time on the Utopia. Wonderful food and service. Royal has figured out cruising and , at least on this ship, they listened to their customer’s advice to make it a great cruise. They excel at hiring employees and compared to other cruise lines , especially Disney, their English is good and their service and attitude superb. The cruise director staff is remarkable. They also hired very friendly locals at the Beach Club who went far and above on service. The ship is stunning with the Royal Promenade looking like a shopping mall, the open air Central Park looking like, well, Central Park, and the Boardwalk with its carousal looking like a kids’ paradise. Some other hints that I will extend: The shower has a combined shampoo- conditioner - body gel. It’s not the greatest. Bring your own shampoo and conditioner or you will have dried out hair. We brought out own body wash also. At the sink area, there is a bar of soap that leaves the soap dish really gross. We bought antibacterial liquid hand soap to bring on board. We also bought for $3 at Target 18 additional hangers as there is plenty of hanging space in the two closets. Not like the past…there is no nightly housekeeping services. The attendant will only service your room in the morning. Ask for extra towels. We also bought a nightlight that is a magnet and motion sensor for the dark room. Amazon, but you cannot put in checked baggage with its lithium battery. We really enjoyed our balcony room on level 7. We were able to use the stairs to get to the Royal Promonade on level 5 and Central Park on level 8. The deck plans on the app were a great help the first day. Book your show reservations asap so you do not have to stand in the stand-by line. You will see the show, but are rushing your dinner to get in that line. Book your cabin close to an elevator. You will not regret it. The elevator lobbies are not close to the cabins and you will avoid walking literally miles. Also, the elevator system is genius. You will never wait for an elevator more than 20 seconds even on disembarking the ship.

Awesome shows, clean cabins. My complaint is the alcoholic beverages. We paid for the drink package, which is several hundred extra. Felt no effect nor tasted any alcohol. Not even a buzz. My whole group felt like they must be skimping on the drinks. My favorite show was the aqua show. The divers are very talented. Don't miss it. Bingo and game shows are fun. Casino has limited machines: no variety! The cabins are well insulated. We didn't hear any noise from the hallways at all. The staff at main dining were excellent no room for improvement. There is much upselling which is annoying as can be. But I do recommend the room Service. It's worth it.. The food was good. Some not. Get up early for eating breakfast at windjammer if you want seats and a table. Hot tubs are terrific, but most closed at night. Why? Everyone packed in one.
