Ship Reviews

The ship is immaculate and the staff are absolutely fantastic, but it’s not perfect. The first big negative is the wifi and the absolute rip off of the upgraded version of the same. Standard wifi gets you 1 mbps download. This is virtually unworkable. The upgraded wifi, comes at a $209 US premium for 10 days and is supposedly at a ridiculously slow 10 mbps but usually averages 7 mbps. The ship runs starlink so this is simply a hand in your pocket ripoff and massively over priced The food is generally good, but when you pay five star prices you should get five star food. We knew of the extra charge for the top shelf restaurants before going on board, but I still feel this is another example of being ripped off. la Dame, the top restaurant is lovely, the food genuine 5 star but it comes with a $60 a head premium and then you are required to pay extra for the ‘premium’ wines. This point was quite aggressively pushed by the wine waiter suggesting they were on some sort of bonus for wine sales? The no extra payment restaurants were genuinely good, but seemed to lack flair and despite claims of menu rotations we did not see this occur. The overall service was impeccable and really felt top notch and perfectly balanced. Friendly without being over the top and very attentive without being annoying The rooms are not large despite being called balcony suites. Adequate would be a better description. The shows on board were far better than anticipated from previous reviews and were quite a highlight. The resident band, singers and dancers were very good indeed and were quite a highlight. Overall very much enjoyed the cruise except for the above listed blatant hand in pocket ripoffs, which seem so silly and petty by the cruise line. I can’t imagine that they gain too much revenue but spoil something that could be perfect

Our first cruise, went so well that we signed up for a second cruise while aboard. The embarkation in Vancouver was smooth and well organized. We embarked in time for lunch at The Grill. Let me preface by saying I was not expecting 5* food on a cruise but the food at The Grill did nothing to raise my hopes. I was expecting a nicely grilled fresh hamburger, but what I got instead was a frozen patty that looked like it had been cooked in a microwave, it was gray in color. Service was poor and unorganized with servers that did not appear to be trained well. Food at the other restaurants was decent to good, but nothing that made me go "wow, I want to go back for that". Service was hit and miss at all restaurants, ranging from good to very bad (slow). Some meals took over an hour from time of order to delivery, (the excuse we got was, oh, we lost the order. How does that happen on ipad devises)? But as I said, I did not go on a cruise for the food, it was mostly ok and ample. Service was friendly but hit and miss. However, if you did bring it to their attention they did very well at trying to rectify. If I had one advice for Silver Seas, some of the venues are very restrictive in choices and somewhat fufu, keep it simple. Also, food at odd meals times was limited with the only choice being pizza if you wanted to grab a bite after lunch but before dinner. Overall, service, outside the restaurants, was excellent. Our butler and room staff were top notch, kept our room clean, organized and well stocked without being intrusive. Took care of every request timely and with a smile. Every staff member greeted you and some even knew your name. Ship was well appointed, very clean, no trash or dirty glassware or dishes sitting around. Cruise director was top notch. Cabin (Silver Suite) was large, comfortable, clean, well maintained and stocked and very quite. Only complaint, other cruisers smoking (both cigs and weed) on their veranda's would totally ruin my enjoyment of sitting on my veranda as the wind blew all the smoke towards mine. Even through forbidden, not sure how Silver Seas polices this. Activities, I know this is a ship of mostly people over 50, but I would think they could come up with something more than bingo, shuffleboard, trivia and golf putting. I mean, they were fun, well organized and I enjoyed them, but for a 10 day cruise I think they could vary them a bit. Ok, I have to sound like "that guy" for a moment, but you would earn game points for winning some of these activities. I thought they were kidding when they said you could turn them in for a key chain at the end of the cruise. Anyway, they were right, I turned my points in for a Silver Seas key chain/bottle opener. I mean, I just spent mid 5 figures for a cruise and that is the best you can come up with, I mean, seemed really cheap, but oh well. Entertainment, I was not expecting Taylor Swift or Adele. What we got was a steady diet of the Silver Sea singers and dancer. They were actually better than what I was expecting for a cruise line. The shows would last 30-45 mins and they varied in theme every night, from Motown to Broadway. Nice way to end an evening. Ship, both outside and inside was well maintained with muted colors and artwork displayed all over. The effect was calming, quite and soothing. Spa, massage was excellent, staff seemed to be well trained, 50 mins felt like 5. Captain was personable, but always seemed like he was in a hurry (maybe we was). Disembarkation was a breeze. Went off without a hitch. Now I admit, Alaska was the star of this trip, but Silver Seas made it very enjoyable and stress free. Everything ran on time, excursions were well run with most guides being very good. They just need to step up their game with the food and restaurant service a bit. Maybe concentrate on running 4-5 restaurants really well instead of 8 just so-so. Maybe have a cafe open odd hours service simple quick food. BTW, I did book a second cruise on Silver Seas while of board.

I was aboard the Muse for 11 nights. We were a group of 3 couples, and it was their first time with Silversea. The Muse is beautiful and impeccably maintained. The fresh flowers everywhere were lovely! It is an elegant ship with interesting art work and a luxury feel overall. Suite was very well appointed, quiet and comfortable. I did not care for the TV’s in the mirrors and we had constant issues with them working (as did our friends). Our butler was terrific and much better than our butler on Nova. We were well taken care of, with special requests handled expeditiously and with a smile. Our suite on Deck 6 was elegant, quiet and well appointed. Great beds, smallish bathroom with one sink. Balcony was spacious and we used it a lot. The food was an overall disappointment. Atlantide was fine at lunch but just lousy at dinner. They were woefully undestaffed. Servers at dinner were abrupt. Service was slow. Food was underseasoned and never the proper temp. Twice there and we decided not to return. It was simply not enjoyable. We opted in for the Sommelier lunch on the last sea day. Good, but not worth the 200 pp price tag. Wine pours were small and one per person of each. Indochine was better as was La Terazza. At both we soon adopted a favorite server and the experience was so much better than at Atlantide. Food was still a disappointment, though, and we were suprised as Nova scored so well on the food front. We did not try the buffet for any meals. Breakfast was coffee and fruit in the room and lunch was in port or at Atlantide. I don't understand why lunch was SO much better than dinner, other than that there was rarely anyone there. Kasakei was nice for lunch but the menu is way too limited, and Nova far exceeded Muse in this area as well. No soups, no salads. Only premade sushi and one day, no sake was available as it was a "dry" lunch day in this venue. Entertainment was ok. We had far more fun on Nova in the piano bar than on Muse. Arts Cafe was a nice place for a coffee break. The fitness center was adequate for the size of the ship and there was a 30 minute class most days. It was ok. Alaska was the highlight of this cruise and the excursions generally were quite good. The Captain did an outstanding job of getting us up close and personal to the glaciers. Magnificent! We saw a ton of wildlife, which is always a crapshoot in Alaska. All in all, it was a nice cruise but the Muse really needs to address their food issues and up their game.
