Ship Reviews

As experienced Regent cruisers, this was our first cruise with Silversea, and having read all the negative reviews on the Silver Whisper on this website, we were a bit nervous. But we were very pleasantly surprised. The ship was in mint condition. Our suite was spacious enough, the bed was very comfortable, and we really liked the double sink in the bathroom. The staff was exceptionally nice, friendly, helpful and professional, and the officers were very personable, open and always around. We had the opportunity to attend 2 behind-the-scenes-tours (galley and bridge) and 2 Q&A sessions which were a real treat. We were also impressed with the perfect organization of the on- and off-boarding process and the tours. The dispatch of the tours was exceptionally smooth. The only mild disappointment was regarding food and wine which were fine but not exceptional and below our (maybe unrealistic) expectations, given Silversea's reputation

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience. Lovely accommodation, comfortable public areas (never overcrowded), very good food and service throughout--and a good selection of tours to choose from. I'd certainly recommend Silversea and the Silver Whisper. There were just a few things which struck me as strange. The butlers and their deputies were great, but have to dress in ridiculous heavy suits with tails--crazy in the very hot weather experienced on the cruise. Another very odd aspect of the uniform policy is that the ship's officers do not wear "whites" in such weather, and look out of place in their "Blues". And on the subject of officers, I realise this is company policy, but it is rather sad that they are virtually invisible and , (with the exception the oddly titled Hotel Director and Guest Relations Manager) have minimal interaction with passengers. The Captain was also a notable exception and would often mingle with guests and chat with them. Full marks to him. Finally , a couple of minor irritations--the pool area is comfortable but the taped music is a bit too loud and intrusive for my taste; and for some odd reason outside the panoramic lounge on the stern there is a tape of a cricket. Presumably this is to create an exotic or tropical mood--but it seems unnecessary and just odd to me.

Silver Whisper has been refurbished. Very welcome. Comfortable chairs everywhere, pleasant colour scheme. The air conditioning was not perfect but was fine. The main issue last trip, not being able to get food easily at odd hours of the day, has been solved with the installation of the Atrium café. Those banana and chocolate skewers are not to be missed. Downsides: the washers and driers have been replaced by Miele machines which don't do what you tell them and don't dry the clothes. Annoying. Also, our shower seemed to be linked to others: sudden extreme temperature and pressure changes are dangerous, and this must be fixed. The water policy would be fine except that the refillable bottle they supply is too big to carry comfortably in a handbag. Offer different sizes for different trips? Staff are still wonderful. Our butler Laxman and our stateroom attendant Bagus were friendly and efficient and sometimes especially thoughtful. Ioannis was fabulous in finding me wines that weren't chardonnay or merlot. Food was very good, though I'm vegetarian, so my protein mostly consisted of eggs and dairy. The spinach and artichoke souffle and the eggplant parmigiana are standouts, as is the soup, the pasta and – joy of joys – the coffee ice cream. I notice some cutbacks – perhaps to pay for the caviar, which I don't eat. V8, for instance is still listed on the breakfast menu but is always replaced by tomato juice. We ate once in La Dame. The food was good, but we were very uncomfortable with the closeness of other tables. We were assured that they didn't fill every table, but that was not what we found. Lunch on the deck was always very pleasant. Gripe: why do all the women servers have to wear skirts? I assume they must, because why would they, otherwise? Let them wear stylish trouser outfits like the men. We cruised around Spain and really enjoyed the ports, especially Valencia, Seville and of course Motril (for the Alhambra). Maps before we arrive in port would be useful, as would some port talks that told us where to go and what to see rather than focusing on St Augustine and the Trinity. Chocolate and boogie night on the pool deck was a highlight. Cocktails in the Panorama Lounge always a lovely experience, and not too crowded. Portuguese lesson came in handy. All in all, a lovely cruise.
