AmaMagna

As imagined by AmaWaterways’ Co-Founder, Co-Owner and President Rudi Schreiner, the “Godfather of River Cruising,” the one-of-a-kind AmaMagna is the flagship of our award-winning river fleet. Twice the width of traditional European river ships and offering the luxury of space, four unique dining venues and more leisure opportunities, the innovative AmaMagna has redefined the river cruise experience! Most accommodations are spacious suites measuring 355 to 710 sq. ft. with full balconies.

In addition to the Main Restaurant and The Chef’s Table, AmaMagna offers Jimmy’s, a family-style restaurant named for AmaWaterways’ late Co-Owner Jimmy Murphy, and the intimate Al Fresco Restaurant, serving up delicious vegetable-forward fare. Both a sun-deck pool and whirlpool invite guests to refresh and enjoy the views, while AmaMagna’s Zen Wellness Studio is an expansive space with a fitness center, two massage rooms and a refreshing juice bar. A brand-new full-size pickleball court will also be featured on the Sun Deck, debuting in 2023. With connecting staterooms and triple/quadruple accommodations available, AmaMagna is also the perfect river cruise ship for families and groups!

Ship Reviews

Gems of Southeast Europe from Giurgiu to Budapest, November, 2024. My booking included a pre cruise of 2 nights in Bucharest and 2 nights in Brasov. Dracula's castle was a highlight. The local guide explained how the legend followed Vlad's impailment of captives. The Ama Magna was magnificent. It was gorgeously decorated with Christmas ornaments. Many of the crew were warm and welcoming, especially the cruise director, Nemanja. A few were professional, but not like family, an Ama selling point. The on board entertainment was the best I have seen. Although the ship captain said that it didn't matter which side of the ship my cabin faced, this was inaccurate. During the high season that may be true, but not during the off season, as we never saw any other cruise ships. As I had previously researched Northbound, the starboard cabins were much better, as almost the entire cruise they faced the water, not the pier. Category AA cabins were poorly designed as there was almost no storage space for storing clothing and other small, miscellaneous items. They had a few small, open shelves. When I paid 490 Euros for 6 nights upgrade to category AS, I ended up on the port side. AMA's security policies are entirely too strict. No ebikes are allowed due to liability issues, despite signed waivers. Once I was locked out on my balcony as it has a feature not allowing outside opening, and no one warned me. One time my key card failed to open the cabin door. Same issue with a neighbor cabin. The Apple computer was nearly useless as Ama does not allow peripheral devices to be accessed on it. The smart TV provided nearly the same features.

Amazing ship and terrific introduction to the Christmas Markets. Boarded the ship in Vilshofen and loved the small town and Christmas market. A sign of things to come! The ports were interesting and the excursions were great. We opted to focus on the Christmas markets and tours of the towns. Dining room was the best!! Roger was our waiter most meals and loved him! Super accommodating to my mother's gluten free diet. The chef, Ferry, was present every evening and so gracious! Shared several recipes. Food is truly top notch and found the wine pairings spot on. Chef's Table was also terrific. Jimmy's was good but the venue was so loud. Only 2 long tables occupied, and they placed us next to each other. The other table was just obnoxious.ly loud. Sort of a cute contest between several folks. Loved the sip and sail each evening and enjoyed the variety of cocktail options during that event. Staff was spectacular. So courteous and kind. Very gracious to the diverse passengers on the cruise. Ship is spacious and just lovely!! My third AMA trip and loved it!!

We had an awesome cruise on the AmaMagna. The ship itself is a work of art and Christmas decorations were amazing. The crew were fantastic and the food was as good as you would find in any five star restaurant. The variety of daily excursions to choose from were interesting, well planned and highly organized. The spacious cabins were comfortable and well appointed. Marc, the cruise Director went out of his way to ensure that all of the passengers were informed of the days events. Small touches, free laundry and welcome gifts for example, were greatly appreciated. AmaWaterways has the logistics down to a science, from the airport transfers and everything in between. We would recommend Ama cruises with no hesitation. We have sailed on Ama four times now, and previously had sailed with two other river cruise lines. Amas is the best in our humble opinion. We are looking forward to our next on Ama.

We sprang for the owners suite when it became available shortly before our cruise. So this review is specific to winter cruising in the largest suite on any riverboat in the world. Keep in mind, as you read this, I am a veteran of ocean cruising with 30+. But this is only my 3rd river cruise and first European River cruise. So some of my comparison are against ocean cruising. The AmaMagna owners suite is 710 square feet. It comes with a full bar (replenished as needed) with your choice of spirits. There are one and a half bathrooms, a separate bedroom, large living room, six person dining area, walk in closet, extensive balcony, electric fireplace, individual desk top computer, two large screen TVs and for Christmas cruises: a full sized Christmas tree. It also comes with a butler. But more on that later. This is the ultimate in luxury for Christmas Markets cruising. But it was wasted on our particular itinerary. We visited so many ports and took part in so many activities, we were barely in the Owners Suite except to sleep. The standard suite is 300+ square feet and is plenty big enough. But more on the ultimate luxury. The main bathroom, in the OS, was large, with double sinks, full sized shower and a separate soaking tub. It had faux candles, if you want to luxuriate by candle light. Perks of the owners suite. We never paid for a drop of liquor all cruise long. In the bar, the sip n sail happy hour was extended to 24/7 for us. Even if we wanted to buy drinks for another couple, we were not charged. At dinner, if we wanted an upscale bottle of wine, it was included. We did get fresh fruit changed out daily in our cabin. That was a nice touch. Dinner at the Captain’s Table on formal night appears to be included too. We were invited. We politely declined because our daughter was cruising with us in a regular cabin. No problem, our daughter was added to the Captain’s table at our request. The bottom line is any request we made was cheerfully granted . A note about formal night. It’s not very formal. The captain had a dinner jacket on. I had a sport coat and tie. I didn’t see any other gentleman dressed for dinner. About a dozen ladies wore cocktail attire. So you won’t feel out of place if you don’t dress for dinner. Ama offers complimentary laundry to all cabins, not just the OS. We way overpacked! Our laundry was out by 0900, back by 1800 every day. We ate most of our meals in the Main Dining Room. We found the breakfast menu very good. Standard buffet food and an a cooked to order menu that was delivered efficiently. The lunch menu was also okay. Two or three choices every day. Hamburgers and pizza if you didn’t like the offerings. The dinner menu was quite limited as far as I was concerned. Again only three offerings each night. A meat choice, a fish choice and a vegetarian option. We got bored with the menu quickly. Steak and roasted chicken are also available every night if you don’t like the regular menu. But, I think they need to have a few more options. Several nights, we didn’t like any offering and all ate steak. First world problems, right? I rated this cruise 4 out of 5 because we found the dinner menu only worthy of 3 stars. And we did not have enough time on board to enjoy this wonderful ship. That and the butler. . About the butler: We were introduced to our butler on day one. We were told to call on her for anything we needed. We never saw her again for the rest of the cruise. She never checked in on us. We never saw her around the ship. Your mileage may vary but our butler refused to buttle! This port intensive cruise is a great way to spend a little time in a lot of Christmas markets. We felt rushed in every port except Budapest, where we began our cruise and overnighted. So it’s a great cruise to get the flavor of Eastern Europe, but just a tiny taste. On that note, I would have been happy to spend a half day on board doing nothing once in a while. We did that by skipping shore excursions. It’s not uncommon to have three excursions a day. I mentioned our sub par butler, but the rest of the crew made up for it. The cruise manager acted more like our own personal butler, even though she had 180 other passengers to attend to. I have never felt more pampered by a crew member in 30+ cruises. Our cabin attendant greeted us with a smile each morning. We fell in love with our main dining room server Mon Mon. What a joy she was. The crew at the reception desk were remarkably friendly. The bar staff rushed to get us drinks. I asked for a side glass of water our first night. I never had to ask again. As soon as my glass was empty, head bartender Marius refilled it. Our cruise manager, Radi, came up with fun contests to keep us engaged all cruise. Take a picture of the longest word you can find, take a pretty picture, a funny picture. Prizes given out for the winners. Even the caption, who was busy running the shop, found time to meet and greet passengers daily. You don’t get that kind of attention on big ships. The on board entertainer was a Romanian pianist named Romeo. He did a magnificent job, although I don’t recall ever hearing him sing or speak. He was just there. Our cruise had guest singers two nights . Most nights there were off shop activities, so they didn’t book talent. The gym is small and packed when they have morning exercise and stretching classes. You cannot really work out during those times. I ended up working out at 5:30am and had the place to myself. There is much to enjoy about this cruise ship and the Owners Suite. I highly recommend the cruise. However, I thought the Owners Suite was not a good value because there was not a lot of down time to enjoy the suite. It’s not a bad problem to have. Overall, I think the Ama product is fantastic. I will definitely sail Ama again and even the AmaMagna with its limited itinerary (it’s so big, it can only cruise the Danube between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany). But I will not spring for an owners suite.
