Ship Reviews

Prior to sailing I saw so many conflicting reviews about the food, condition of the ship, and service - everything ranged from outstanding to terrible. I am writing this to hopefully clarify for future cruisers. For context, I was travelling with my wife and two kids, now aged 15 and 18. Our first two cruises were with Disney in 2016 and 2017, and our most recent prior to this was in April of 2023 with Princess. Cabin: We stayed in a sunset veranda cabin overlooking the wake. There was maybe a little more vibration from the engine, but it wasn't at a level that bothered any of us. For those concerned about soot, I did get soot stains on my shorts from sitting outside one morning and then stained the bed comforter as well, but that was the only time it happened. We really didn't find soot to be an ongoing or particularly large issue. The angle of the back of the ship does allow people above you to see you if you stand near the railing, but sitting down in the balcony chairs closer to the door to the cabin gives you enough privacy. The sun can be brutal out there depending on the time of day. The inside of the cabin and its furnishing were in great shape. The one real disappointment was that the 4th bed was a trundle that rolled out from beneath the couch bed rather than a pull-down from the ceiling. This made it challenging to get to the balcony when I woke up before everyone else. Condition of the ship: We thought the ship was well kept and the furnishings appeared to be in good shape to us. If it was my opinion alone I wouldn't have much confidence in this statement, but my wife very much cares about the aesthetics of her surroundings, and she was very happy with the ship's decor and furnishings. If I searched hard enough I was able to find some wear and tear, especially in the seating for the outdoor areas, but nothing unsightly. The biggest thing I noticed was when boarding the ship, the outward facing sections of the wooden trim on the balconies appeared severely dinged. But, you don't look at that ever again, so don't let the sight of that concern you when boarding. Service: The staff are very friendly and professional, and they all work hard to make sure guests are taken care of. They do seem to be a bit frazzled and stressed, but they do their best to hide it. They go out of their way to take care of guests. Food - Buffet: Overall the food was very good, but I now understand why ratings are all over the place. Most items are great, but there was some inconsistency. In general, the sauces used for the Indian or Thai dishes were very flavorful with a good hit of spice, but the meat was sometimes tender and delicious, sometimes tough and chewy. The meats at the carving station were consistently very good. My son and I loved the pizza, but this is subjective. The crust was extremely thin and not crispy, so if deep dish or strong crust is your style you'll be disappointed. We loved the flavor of the sauce, cheese, and light crust. I would recommend getting small amounts of everything that interests you at first so that you can figure out what's worth returning for more. We aren't dessert people, so sorry we are no help there. The breakfast buffet was also great, and there was a European influence with English-style bacon and black pudding, but standard American breakfast was also available. The scrambled eggs were soft scrambled which I loved, but this is another personal preference that others may not agree with. If that's not your thing, you can always get a made to order omelette or eggs benedict, but the line for that sometimes grew long. Food - MDR: The appetizers and entrees ranged from outstanding to terrible. The prime rib was phenomenal, and red meat items tended to be better than fist. I found this also to be true on our Princess cruise. The shrimp appetizer was great though, but ask for horseradish if you like that because the cocktail sauce is basically ketchup. Our table had lamb 4 different ways throughout the week, and aside from one terrible night full of fat and gristle, it was generally good. Unfortunately the lobster tail on the second to last night was disappointingly small and dry. Ports: In Aruba we left the ship around 12:30 after hitting the lunch buffet and caught a bus to Eagle Beach. Worked very well for us, but my wife compared the ride to the Night Bus on Harry Potter. They really zip around like they're in a small car. The beach was great, and we found chairs and an umbrella close to the water for $50. Only downside is that there is a sewage plant nearby, so sometimes a stench would waft through that was unpleasant. Curacao was fine. The waves seem to be much larger there, and the coastline and most beaches have rocks set up to break the surf. Most swimming beaches for tourists look like lagoons behind these rocks. We just walked around the town and crossed Queen Emma's bridge for some shopping. Nice enough, but don't need to go back. Bonaire was amazing. Less populated island, and our snorkeling trip was gorgeous. Loved the main island as well as our short trip to Kleine Bonaire. We're going back at some point. Other items: We are a family that likes to rest and rejuvenate on vacation, so we often slept in. We spent no time by the pool. After dinner, we usually hit up various bars, with Ensemble Lounge, Sunset Bar, and the Passport Bar (by the grand foyer) being our favorite spots. The silent disco night is hilarious. The martini bar was fun, but a bit too crowded for us generally. The Wine Cellar was also nice for a quiet spot with a drink. Overall: Despite all of the constructive criticism in this review, we had a wonderful cruise and really enjoyed our vacation together as a family. I would recommend Celebrity to others, but my current thought is that Princess might be a slightly better value as their costs seem a bit lower and the food in the main dining rooms (two years ago) was a bit better. Hope this review is helpful!

(6 day cruise -Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Nassau - Celebrity Reflection- April 6th to 12th) The Good: - "Bobby the Solo Guitarist" - Wow! what an Amazing voice! A real talent - his music was classy, +beautiful. -The Buffet was overall great quality with lots of variety. Cuts of Meat+meat dishes+stews were very tender/had great flavor. Huge variety of veggies, salads, breads, cheeses, fruits, pastas, desserts. However, a lot of the Cakes were dry and bland but the bread pudding, pineapple upside down cake, creme brulee, and Flan custard were absolutely 100% Perfect. -"Tea Time" from 3:30pm to 4:30pm had lots of great sandwiches, fresh fruit, salads, scones, biscuits, desserts - Really great option if you missed lunch. -Entertainment was pretty good. Comedian was really great and interacted with the audience a lot and did a lot of "Improv" which takes true talent -Public Bathrooms are kept very clean - I saw a lot of bathroom attendants constantly cleaning. This old ship was smelling good! -Celebrity is good at the little "extra touches" - bathrobes and umbrellas in cabin, beach towels provided for port days, chocolate on pillows, cleaning cabin twice a day, over-sized/large + comfy bed pillows, captain speaker announcements to keep you updated on weather + itinerary, etc. . . He also did a "quote of the day" which was very clever. -Ship was well-maintained considering its age (except for my cabin Fridge which wasn't working Lol !) -the Celebrity employees were hard-working+ friendly - they really go out of their way to greet you/make you feel appreciated. -going to your "Muster station" as soon as you board the ship is a good idea to get it out of the way -I like that Celebrity plays the music from the 60s, 70s+80s. The Classics! Elvis, Abba, Aretha Franklin, John Denver, the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Karen Carpenter, Beatles, Blondie. What could be better??? The Bad: -Not anywhere near enough time on the islands. Disappointed - everything I did on the islands felt very rushed because of so little time before having to get back on the ship. -Breakfast buffet and sea day Lunch buffet are always a real Circus - go late or early! -Scammed in the port of Cozumel - at some point the shop owners figured out that the "you break it, you buy it" can be a very lucrative business. They over fill the shelves so that items are hanging over the shelf and will easily fall with any tap/bump/wind and they leave price stickers off so that when something breaks they can "up the price". I was forced/demanded to pay $30 for a very small sand statue that fell +broke and then I saw the same exact statue being sold at another shop for $7. There were other items in that same shop that scammed me which were $100-$500 and they too were hanging off shelves about to fall. These items are not being kept secured for the same reason- to scam people. If one of those higher priced items broke, then I'm not even sure what you would have to do, probably get the police involved. Please be aware of what these souvenir shops are doing!

My sister and I were in Aqua A1 cabin. It’s a regular cabin (with a great shower), but what we loved the most was the size of the balcony. There were two recliners with foot rests and a small table with plenty of extra space. It is the first cabin behind the spa. The location was perfect for us, easy access to the forward elevators and (dangerously?) close to the spa. It was just easy to add services when you were walking past the entrance daily multiple times. We found Blu’s food delicious and when we didn’t find the selection we wanted on the menu we ordered from the MDR menu. We ate in the Oceanview cafeteria several times and enjoyed the variety and quality. The only time we felt there were misses were at breakfast. Particularly the premade scrambled eggs had an odd consistency but everything else was good. We ate at Quisine and Tuscan Grill, both delicious and worth the money. We enjoyed several shop excursions, tours and mixology classes, and highly recommend those. Our shore excursions (3 Celebrity excursions) were very good, especially the two in Aruba. There were a few small negatives, dirty glasses not removed from our cabin a few times, one employee who was less than cordial in the casino and when we tried to go to Opus for dinner one night the greeter so strongly “suggested” that we go to our “special restaurant” that we ended up not eating at Opus. Non of those were big deals and the fact that they were so noticeable speaks to the excellent care and customer service we received.
