Ship Reviews

Greetings, I just thought I would drop a quick review here for your edification. I am a Royal Caribbean loyalist and I thought I would drop a few thoughts on my first experience with Celebrity. When Royal announced that they were offering direct crossover status matching my interest was peaked. As Diamond plus we were given Elite plus status with Celebrity. I really don’t think status played much of a role in the overall experience but I mention it because it was part of the motivation for choosing the cruise. Just after the announcement I looked at my calendar to see if there was an opportunity to try Celebrity. Initially it looked like it wouldn’t be possible but then I saw I had an open weekend after a conference I was attending in Florida and tagging on a 3 day weekend cruise would be a great way unwind at the end of the week. I emailed my TA with two possibilities, This Silhouette cruise and a Liberty of the Seas cruise with the same dates. The prices came in about the same so Silhouette was selected. The ship is beautiful. There was a major refurbishment in Feb. 2020 and it is evident in every part of the ship we were in. I can’t stress enough how good everything looked. For a ship that was brought into service in 2011, her pristine condition belies her teenage years. Not just the common areas either, our cabin had been renewed/refreshed as well. The Layout of the ship reminded me of a larger version of Royal’s Radiance class ships. I’ve been on Serenade a couple of times and it had that feel. I realize it is larger but it “felt” the same. The Grand Foyer and succeeding areas on deck 4 and 5 felt very Centrum like. It was here I found my first bar. I usually find a bar or two that becomes “my bar”. It’s the place that becomes my default place to hangout. On this cruise it was here on deck 3 at what is called the Passport Bar. The bartenders were very personable, they made great drinks and there were enough people around to make it interesting without making it feel crowded. My second bar was the pool bar. The bartenders were excellent, very personable and the bar wasn’t overcrowded during the days while people were in port. I spent couple of hours there each day. Both days were early afternoon while the ship was still partly empty. Day 2 while we were in Key West the ship felt deserted and the bar reflected that. While we were in Bimini it wasn’t as empty. Clearly a lot of folks just decided to make it a ship day. The bar was busier but the bartenders easily kept up until later in the afternoon when I descended to deck 3 and the Passport bar. There is a Martini Bar on deck 4 for those who like that thing. The Coffee Bar on deck 5 requires extensive training. DW went twice a day every day of the cruise and I don’t think she ever got a satisfactory drink. It was here where we had our only service failure. On day 2 and after a couple of failures on day 1 she actually wrote out the specific instructions for her Latte. That didn’t seem to help. Her drink isn’t that complicated. Sugar free vanilla (4 pumps) latte with no fat milk, stir in a Splenda and only a 1/2 shot of espresso. When she attempted to order this the first time, the order taker (I can’t call him a barista) furrowed his brow and said “I will try” The next time he said I can’t do 1/2 shot. She explained just pour half the espresso in the cup and half in the sink. He failed again. And again and again until DW just gave up on coffee for the cruise. I don’t know what to think about this. It just seemed really weird and strange to me. DW loves her coffee and this was a big disappointment for her overall. The shopping areas above on deck 4 and 5 were typical. We browsed but never bought anything. The food on board was the first disappointment. It was only a 3 night cruise so we only had 3 meals in the main dining room but each one was average. I call it a disappointment because I read here on CC about Celebrity and I was lead to believe the the food and service would be better. The service was acceptable. The food was only Ok at best. I’ve had good meals and I’ve had a few bad meals in Royal’s dining room but mostly good. There was nothing in this MDR that warranted a “good” designation. We only went to the Oceanview Cafe once and that was on embarkation day. I was reminded why I never to the Windjammer on embarkation day. I had the beef from the carvery, some potatoes and a couple slices of pizza. It was less than stellar. All of it. The meet was kinds rubbery, the potatoes only warm and pizza very poor. The crowd and chaos made the whole experience even worse. Fortunately, the following two days of lunch were redeemed at the Mast Grill. This is just hamburgers, hotdogs and french fries but they were extremely good! Not just good but memorable good. As an added bonus they had a self service ice cream machine right there at the Mast grill so that was a nice added bonus. On the thought of Ice cream I have to say that Celebrity seems to give you more options for ice cream than Royal. There were a couple of self serve options on the ship not just the one you typically find on the pool deck on Royal. Also, there was an ice cream bar where you had about 6 flavor choices plus top topping at the entrance to the Oceanview cafe. This was a big win for Celebrity. I’m am Ice cream junkie and that has always been We had breakfast each morning in the Tuscan Grill. They offer a sit-down continental breakfast each morning that is a perk for those with Elite status or higher. It was basic but good. You could order from a menu and they had nice assortment to select from. Nothing hot but a good selection none the less. The biggest benefit of this was provided not just orange juice but real, fresh squeezed OJ. That was a big win for me in the morning. It’s hard to compare experiences as they relate to demography because this was a weekend cruise and I’ve only ever done one weekend cruise with Royal and that was back in 2019. There were a fair number 20, 30, and 40 something’s on this cruise. I am late 50’s. It wasn’t rowdy, it was just loud. One thing of note kids were scarce of this cruise. We saw some but not many and they were not noticeable at all. Entertainment was OK, it was typical cruise stuff. I missed my skating show and I thought the house band, while decently skilled, were pretty tame for my tastes. I enjoyed them but will forget them quickly. DW got as massage as is her custom and it was good but expensive just like it is on Royal. Our cabin steward was good. He attended to the room twice a day but we never saw as towel animal. I like down animals but it’s not that big a deal. The only negative interaction was on debarkation morning. This was my fault but I don’t think it was handed well. We planned on leaving the room at just before 8 am. That is what we typically do on Royal. I didn’t know that you needed to be out of the room at 7:30. Our came to our room a couple of minutes after 7:30, while I was still in the shower, and told DW that we needed to be out be 7:30. She apologized and said we would be gone as soon as possible. I race out the shower, dressed and got the last things packed into my carryon by 7:50. Unfortunately, he felt it necessary to come to the room every 5 minutes to remind us that we were supposed to be out by 730. It put a bit of a cloud on the whole experience. I realize it was my error but his badgering didn’t help me expedite my departure and only served to annoy me to have to go to the door three different times. All in all I’d say that I’m a Royalist and likely to continue to be one in the future. I know that there is an advantage to familiarity and this comparison isn’t completely fair but at least I acknowledge my bias. I’d definitely try Celebrity again if the dates, itinerary and price were all right but in all likelihood it will be Royal for me for the foreseeable future.

We just got back from a 4 night cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette with stops in Key West and Bimini. This was our first time cruising with Retreat and we were excited to experience it. Lots of positives including the celebrity suite, which worked great for us and our 7 year old. The balcony had a large table so we chose to order room service often to eat out there. The bathroom was spacious and the retreat robes were a real treat! The ship itself was in good shape and our daughter enjoyed time at the kids club. The face painting was a particularly big hit on the last day. Our butler (Kate) was very present and checked in often. The food at Luminae was excellent, some of the best we have ever had on a cruise ship. The wait staff was amazing with our daughter, made her feel very special. Embarkation and demarkation were so incredibly easy. We had a few minor issues. The retreat sundeck was a bit of a let down. There was basically no shade which made it unusable for us. Pretty much every room service order was missing something, though they fixed it quickly when we asked. I think overall we like longer cruises better but getting to experience retreat this time made it special. I don't know if it was completely worth the cost but it did add something of you are looking to upgrade your next cruise. Key West: We did the hop on, hop off trolley and enjoyed learning about the island. The line for a picture at the southern most point does get long! Bimini: We chose to use the beach at the end of the pier. The beach was very nice, chairs and umbrellas to rent ($65 for 2 chairs and an umbrella, bring cash), and they had a few food trucks. The beach was nice and the water was warm. We did see some small jellyfish but were able to avoid them.

This was my first sailing on Celebrity but my 12th sailing overall. I have cruised Disney, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian. I booked this sailing back in November 2023 when I found an excellent deal on one of the four Interior Single rooms, as I've always wanted to visit Key West. I stayed at Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina the night before the cruise and booked a Tower Water View room to have a chance of a Port Everglades View. The Hilton Honors app allows you to select your exact room and my view was perfect. I took a Lyft to the port the next day and it was very easy. Priority Access: I have used Royal Caribbean’s The Key before, and it seems this option is fairly similar. However, I wouldn’t book Priority Access again. Wasn’t needed for boarding but might have been helpful for disembarking. Reserved seats in the theater were the first two rows in the front on the right side facing the stage, could get better seats just by showing up early. Internet access for two devices was nice but I didn’t end up using it on more than one. Continental breakfast is complimentary anyway and I didn’t order any other room service, just an omelet with my regular free options one morning. Welcome lunch was pretty disappointing: wilted/brown salad, the pasta just wasn’t very good. I was nervous as there was no symbol or wording on my Xpress Pass indicating I had purchased it, but no one checked anyway, and it was printed on my SeaPass at my room. Boarding: This was very possibly the smoothest boarding I’ve experienced at any port in 12 cruises. I timed it, and I was on the ship within 7 minutes of arriving at the terminal. My arrival time was 11:30am and I actually arrived shortly after 11am. Nobody was checking for Priority Access “allowance” and there were no lines anyway. Love that Celebrity allows you to drop off your carry on bags at the room immediately! Stateroom: I had booked one of the four solo Interior rooms available, located in the space of the former card room on deck 9. I liked this room a lot better than the comparable studio rooms on Norwegian Cruise Line, not least of all because they have a fridge here. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The location next to the elevators is convenient, but since it is also directly above the Grand Foyer it is very noisy beginning in the afternoon and continuing until around 11:30pm. There is extremely limited storage, which is okay for the short 3-4 night Bahamian cruises but would be a challenge on the longer transatlantic and European sailings. The bathroom is very nice overall except for one thing: the shower door opens inward. I’ve never seen this on any other cruise line, and it’s actually a safety issue - if a guest falls in the shower and needs medical assistance, the door can’t open without being removed. Also causes some flooding into the bathroom area when turning the shower on since the door doesn’t stay fully opened. I met my stateroom attendant exactly once, on day 3. There was a card in the room with a name on it, but it turned out that wasn’t her. I put in a request twice through the QR code on that card to request two additional pillows. No pillows were brought, but when there was a knock on the door I opened it, expecting them. It was the attendant, who seemed annoyed that I was sleeping in that day and would be leaving for lunch soon, as I assume that interfered with her break time - I would have been fine with no morning service. I explained that I had just put in a request for pillows and she said “So you want me to bring them when I clean your room?” Yes, please. I returned from lunch to a clean room and no extra pillows. They finally came with turndown service (which is very nice that Celebrity still offers this! The other lines I have been on in the last year no longer do). Included Dining Choices: the main dining room was just okay for all the meals I went to. I mentioned the welcome lunch above but I went one evening for dinner also. French Onion soup was good, but I also tried the Peach and honey cold soup and didn’t care for the texture. Grilled chicken was fine. Disembarkation breakfast was good and served quickly while still maintaining quality. Ice cream machine at The Mast Grill ran out one late afternoon and staff didn’t seem to care. Mast Grill itself had good options and I liked the variety of available toppings. Oceanview Cafe had a great selection and the food was good there. Typically easy to find a seat. I enjoyed the Spa Cafe for breakfast one morning as well, not crowded and the items there are lighter and seem to be a little healthier than other options. Specialty Dining: I ate four specialty meals onboard. Lunch at Murano and dinner at Lawn Club Grill, Tuscan Grill, and The Porch. Lawn Club Grill was honestly the best meal I’ve ever had on a cruise ship. I’m still dreaming about the filet mignon! Lunch at Murano was tasty and the lunch price is more palatable than the dinner. Very quiet lunch environment, considering it was a sea day. Tuscan Grill was okay but the service was odd. I asked if it was one item per page included and they weren’t very clear about it, and kept asking if I wanted more items. The bruschetta had peppers on it, which I don’t like, but my fault for not reading more closely - I’ve just never had peppers appear on bruschetta before! The gnocchi was great and so was the strawberry shortcake. The Porch was extremely windy, and service was slow. It took 30 minutes to get my drink and food, and then the whole meal was done within the following 30 minutes. Good chicken wings (messy!), lobster roll, and dessert trio. Activities/Entertainment: I enjoyed various trivia games and game shows in the Sky Lounge. I even won Celebrity Heads one afternoon, able to name the most celebrities by the audience giving clues in two minutes. The prizes here are better than on Royal Caribbean; I won a pop-socket. Love & Marriage Game Show was the most boring one I’ve ever seen - not sure if it was the host or the couples, but I didn’t stay through the end. Celebrity isn’t known for their parties and that’s okay - the 80s Party in the Grand Foyer no one dressed up and the White/Full Moon Party on the Lido Deck was low attended, possibly since in started after 10pm. However, while the started with a DJ playing typical dance songs at 10, a live band began very shortly after and that really killed any vibe there was to begin with as they played low-key songs. I saw both the Boogie Wonderland and On Broadway shows and enjoyed them. Also saw the performer OJLive! one evening and he was great. “The Poolest Day at Sea” was cute for the short time I was out there but the pool area was CROWDED. Ports: I took this cruise mainly because I have always wanted to visit Key West. I’m so glad I did, because it was probably my favorite port I’ve ever been to! I got off the ship just after 8am and quickly walked out to the Southernmost Point for a photo with the buoy before the line got too long. Then walked back to the ship and stopped at points of interest along the way: The Butterfly Conservatory, Hemingway House, Nancy Forrester’s Secret Gardens, the Key West Library, the Aquarium, Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe for some delicious pie, and the Little White House. Back on the ship by 1pm. I stayed onboard in Nassau. Disembarkation: This was so easy that I don’t even have much memory of it now! I finished breakfast around 7:30am, which is when Priority Access guests were allowed to leave the ship. I went right to the exit area and port staff led a slow walk through the upper level of the terminal to ensure bags were ready by the time we got down there. I had my bags and was in my Lyft at 7:47am. General Ship Thoughts: In the evening, it felt like there was no quiet place to hang out. Even my room, because of it being above the Grand Foyer - the Library and Hideaway suffer the same issue. Live music and entertainment everywhere, but it was too much at times. Entertainment Court had a couple of game shows but seating there is extremely limited so I didn’t participate. I did have one strange interaction with a bartender at the Sunset Bar, where I asked for a non-alcoholic cocktail, specifically asking for “a virgin” - I had the Zero Proof package. He handed me a receipt that had a charge. I didn’t sign it and asked if this was for alcohol. He said yes, I said I wanted a non-alcoholic one. He said “Well you should say that first next time.” I said that I had said it, he got a little huffy. His co-worker ended up making the drink. I ended up having to go to Guest Services the next day to have the charge removed. I also got charged after leaving the ship for two Coca Colas from the mini-fridge in the room. I absolutely only had one, which was charged onboard, and my folio was correct when I disembarked, so I was surprised to receive a different invoice. After some back and forth via email and a phone call, I was reimbursed for the second one. Overall, I will definitely be back on Celebrity in the future and I would even sail Silhouette again. I would choose a different room, however, based on the lack of storage and the noise level. I greatly appreciate the fact that this ship has any solo rooms at all but they were very literally an afterthought, and it shows.
