Ship Reviews

First time on HAL but we have cruised with Celebrity, Princess, MSC and Norwegian in the past. We are six in the ages of 60 to 80. We truly enjoyed our trip. The ports of call were already a great choice (Fort Lauderdale, Half Moon Cay Bahamas, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) as we absolutely loved the ship. it was smaller than what we were used to (MSC Meraviglia and World Europa), but it had everything we needed. Staff was exceptionally friendly, especially the assistant manager Mr Noor who always assisted us with a smile in dinning room and the Lido market. We had a balcony cabin and were impressed by how luxurious and spacious bathroom it was and with so much storage space! However most of us we dislike the swinging door as opposed to sliding door of most of modern ship. It was really hard to open. Imagine a lady of 70 years old was hardly able to open. Food was truly amazing in the main dinning room and Lido market. They have waiters serving you the food at the Lido buffet, which makes things cleaner but also slower. I loved that they (Lido Market) served Asian fruits every time like mango, papaya, Chinese peach, tamarind and rambutan, particularly roasted belly porks which were really good and exotic and a selection of really good desserts/cakes. They also had complimentary popcorn/pizza/chicken wings to watch the movies at the poolside in the evening. The Corned beef and Rueben Rye were very delicious offered in The New York Pizza. There was no disco, but the live music is quite good, especially the BB kings club and Rolling Stone where the BB kings band play live jazz/blues. The daily entertainment schedule was varied on par with most cruise lines. The shows of Magic Island SteelBand and The Magician show were really enjoyable to watch as the rest was average as the comedian was a bit mediocre, the only thing we found lacking and below par on the main stage repeated for 2 nights each show. This was actually not the best show entertainment we have encountered on all our cruises. Everything else on the cruise was great and our members had a fantastic time like pickleball, ping pong as the pools were small for the population on board. We enjoyed chatting on Navigator apps as a mean of communication among members on board. This is a unique feature of the HAL cruises. The Rotterdam is a beautiful ship; the cabins are lovely, the crew is very professional but also extremely affable as most of them were Indonesian and the food is great, too. But, given a choice of a similar itinerary, I think I would choose Celebrity or Royal Caribbean over HAL in the future. Other than that, highly recommended! They also give us a free beach bag as souvenir… 3 families from Quebec, Canada

A lot to like about this ship but after cruising on ten different cruise lines including, Disney, Uniworld, Azamara, Celebrity Royal Caribbean, Oceana, , Norwegian, Viking, and Halland America I would rate this ship as a B-. There were several positives; the trips we took off the boat were very good, equal or above most of what we experienced on the other ships. The food in the buffet was also very good and I would rate the overall service is an A, although our room steward was a bit of disappointment. Our room was always clean and they was very friendly however things that we asked for just didn’t come right away and on other ships they seem to know when we’re out of our room because that’s when they clean on this ship it was always inconvenient because we would be gone for a couple of hours and when we come back, the room still wouldn’t be cleaned and several nights. We just told the Stewart that we just wanted clean towels and that would be fine. Sometimes there was chocolate sometimes not it was very iffy. And althouf the food and the service in the dining room was excellent and so was the service and food at the buffet when we went to their specialty restaurant, the Pinnacle, we were extremely disappointed, I would give it a C at best. It was the worst specialty restaurant we have ever gone to an cruise ship. We waited almost 20 minutes between when our water came, and the waiter came back to take our wine order, and he only came back because we were able to corner somebody ;the Maitre D was abrupt and not particularly helpful. The food was OK, but not what we’ve experienced on other ships at their specialty dining rooms. The other problem I had was the constant nickel and dime although we had the most expensive drink package we were still forced to pay for water when we left the ship and when we were on the private island, this is ridiculous. Apparently, our plan included canned water, but not bottled water and when you’re paying almost $60 a night per person that is just silly. Raves to the bartender at Lido, Socrates, who was wonderful also a rave to the steel band, which was great and our room was comfortable and very spacious. It was also wonderful to have a priest on board. I just got a diagnosis of metastatic cancer, and this was very special for me. I was extremely disappointed to hear that they were going to be taking on many ships again. This seems to be Holland America’s nickeling and shame on them.

Excellent first experience with Holland. Very friendly dining, bar and cabin staff. Great food with lots of variety and various dining options. Impressive special restaurants. We ate at Tamarin and Pinnacle and enjoyed both. Also, try the surf and turf in the main dining room. Extra $ but worth it. We liked cruising more than 7 days and enjoyed the sea days. We purchased the Have It All Package and enjoyed the freedom it allowed - 1 free special restaurant, free wi-fi, $100 pp shore excursion credit and no charge for alcohol, soft drinks and special coffees. We feel like we got our money's worth. We had a misunderstanding with the Photo Gallery. Escallated it to the Asst General Manager and he took care of it. Don't waste your money on the Aruba Eagle Beach excursion. It was $40 per person. A cab to the farther and better end of the beach was $15 each way.
