MS Spitsbergen

MS Spitsbergen

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. HX Hurtigruten Expeditions has a long history of traveling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'.

After a complete reconstruction, MS Spitsbergen joined the HX Hurtigruten Expeditions fleet in 2016. The ship features high technical standards as well as comfortable, modern public areas and cabins. She is modern and environmentally progressive and will undergo further improvements that will reduce emissions and fuel consumption even more. The new ship’s manoeuvrability and optimal size make her quite suitable for exploring polar waters.

MS Spitsbergen has her own onboard Expedition Team which serves as a university at sea. Interesting lectures inside the ship as well as out on the sun deck make cruising with her an exciting and educational journey. Topics depend on the season and the waters in which we sail. The Expedition Team hosts a lecture programme and evening gatherings daily. Out on deck, you can participate in live points of interest to learn more about the nature, culture and other phenomena we encounter along the coast. In addition, the Expedition Team will introduce you to the uniquely Norwegian notion of 'friluftsliv' (outdoor life), and encourage you take part in 'friluftsliv' hikes and activities throughout the cruise.

An HX trip includes everything from daily excursions and activities to our onboard Science Centre, meals, gratuities, drinks* and more. All designed to give you the expedition experience of a lifetime.

Ship Reviews

The HX website was not easy to use and did not provide a means of pre-booking excursions; some which I would have chosen to go on were booked out. The cruise started from and ended in Greenock (calling that Glasgow is misleading). Check-in was easy and welcoming. The free jackets were good - but the time to pick them up ended at 15:30, our first boarding time - but an extra session was arranged for the next day when we complained. The cabin was well equipped; it was well looked after during the cruise by Raymond. The restaurant was just big enough for all the guests and the food and wine were good. The expedition team were mostly great (but Marcel was not a good communicator when leading activities) We were very lucky with the weather and grateful to the captain and team for changing the programme around so that we could visit St Kilda - the wind and waves on our planned day would have prevented landing. My rating of 1 for 3 items below was meant to be blank as I had no opinion and they were not relevant to me - not that they were bad.

I found the whole experience was absolutely brilliant. The Crew were all great, from the Captain, Terje, all the way down. The Expedition Team, lead by Regine, were all equally knowledgeable, patient and helpful . From Jakob on geology to Laurence on Scottish history and songs ( which I really liked ) It would be unfair to pick out a particular individual. A great time was had by both of us. It was obvious that Thess and many many others put a lot of effort into making sure that, weather permitting, we did and visited everything we could. All the trips were great, and wold be a shame to loose any. This was my 3rd trip with Hurtigruten and I'm sure that it won't be my last. I'll be in touch. I found that having to sort out my own parking at Port Glasgow was not convenient. While the Luggage was collected at booking in and delivered to our cabins, the same did not happen when we disembarked.

For those travelling to the Galápagos on Santa Cruz II only - Parents with children below the age of 6 need to present at embarkation a release form signed by their parents or guardians to board a Galápagos cruise. If children between the ages of 6-18 are accompanied by one parent/legal guardian, a minor consent form signed by the other parent, or both parents if the minor is accompanied by a legal guardian, must be presented on boarding.
