The staff in the restaurant and in the Top Sail (Yacht Club) lounge were excellent. The food was very good indeed - no complaints there at all. The Yacht Club accommodation was clean and well serviced. The butler and steward were friendly and competent. Sadly, there were a couple of disappointing episodes: Christmas Carols. I asked for an appointment to meet the Entertainments Manager. The Deputy Cruise Manager came to see me in the Top Sail Lounge. That was very good of her. I asked her for the opportunity for the singing of Christmas Carols and the sharing of the nativity story on Christmas Day. I brought with me eight carols on .mp3 files and the words of the carols on a PowerPoint presentation and presented them to the Deputy Cruise Manager. Her immediate response was that singing Christmas carols on Christmas Day would be offensive to guests on the cruise, and even reminded me that Chinese New Year is at a different time of year – although I fail to understand the relevance of that to Christmas Day. There are many activities advertised on board. Those who wish to attend do so; those who do not wish to attend do not. Those guests of a Christian faith who remember the birth of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Saviour of mankind at Christmas are offended at the secularism of the occasion; yet it is not only Christians who enjoy a traditional carol service. Many others do. The secularism of MSC Preziosa’s christmas without Christ was in itself offensive to me and to many others on board. My request was refused. The bigotry was clearly evident, especially as there is a daily meeting for LGBTQI+ persons advertised in the diary. Boarding. Boarding was a disaster for a couple with a wife in a wheelchair. I had been emailed and had printed off a document for ‘Fast Track’ boarding for Yacht Club guests. I showed the document at every opportunity, followed the instructions given by staff and we found ourselves eventually on the ship on Deck 6, I believe. Again, I showed the ‘Fast Track’ document, and we were directed towards the front of the ship to find the lift to take us to Deck 16. We got a bit lost but decided to try going through the casino. At the far side of the casino we found lifts – but they only took us to Deck 14. I left my wife outside the lifts on Deck 14 and took the stairs to Deck 16. I found our room but the stationery on the table was addressed to a couple with a different name, so I lost confidence in having found the correct room. In the corridor I found a steward, explained the situation, and he took me in the lift back down to Deck 14 to find my wife in her wheelchair, and then took us with his staff card in the lift which enabled him to go to Deck 15, where he took us to the concierge desk. From there, all was well. We only have one opportunity to make a first impression! The experience of floundering through the ship searching for lifts that won’t take us to the right level was bewildering, frustrating and somewhat worrying. We now know that we need our cruise card to access Deck 16 – but the cruise card was in our state room which was of course on Deck 16, so it was impossible for us to find our way alone. A most unsatisfactory introduction to MSC Preziosa.
