I have been on 20+ cruises on 5 different cruise lines. I have cruised the Caribbean, Pacific, Asia, and Mediterranean. I have never written a review before. This was my initial cruise with MSC and first in South America, (Brazil). I was "warned" about MSC from other "seasoned" cruisers that all cruised MSC in Europe. As with anything, opinions are personal but they can be valid for more than that person. After a previous unpleasant (and almost shocking) experience with customer service on my "usual" line (RCCL) I wanted to try a new line. MSC offered to match my status with RCCL and I was going to be in Brazil anyway so on a lark I decided to try a 4 day cruise on the MSC Seaview. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the experience. Boarding was a bit tedious. The ship is too big to dock at the terminal so we had ride a bus to the ship. This increased the embarkation time significantly but the process went fairly well. All announcements in the terminal were in Portuguese. I was in the queue with a lovely Brazilian family. The teenaged son spoke some English so I at least had someone who could let me know when I was my time to move to to the boarding process. Although it took almost two hours from arrival at the port to boarding the ship, it was not too bad considering there were 1000's of passengers. The ship is very large and reminded me of the layout of the Norwegian Breakaway. It is has a "modern" design with a very nice atrium. Due to the weather (rain rain and more rain), many passengers ended up spending a lot of time in this area. After boarding I had lunch in the smaller buffet area. The food was delicious but the selections were noticeably less than on other mass market lines. As this cruise was for the Brazilian market, there were always Brazilian specialties on the buffet and Pao de Quijio. What they offered for dessert was all very good to excellent. The breads were also excellent. I stayed in a balcony cabin, "Fantastica" experience, which for me was fine for the short sailing. It was showing some wear and tear but was clean serviced daily. My cabin attendant was very good and "scored' washcloths for me. Apparently they don't provide washcloths on Brazilian sailings. The bed was very comfortable and the view of the sea was heavenly! On the first night I was able to change my dining time and seating. The Maître D' and the servers were very nice and did everything possible to accommodate me as a solo non-Portuguese speaker. In my opinion the food in the dining room was fair to very good. Anything potato or vegetable oriented was excellent, meat and fish mains were presented beautifully but were at best acceptable "banquet" food. The service and atmosphere, and excellent desserts were so nice that it made up for ok main courses. I toured the Spa and it was typical. I had an hour of "free" use of the thermal area but never got around to trying it out. I had a drink package that was sufficient for me. It included basic alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, soft drinks and bottled water. I though it was a great value for what it included. Service was great even when the bar areas were incredibly busy. Due to the persistent rain, most of the outside activity areas were not useable so the inside lounges were crowded. As busy as they were, the staff had a great system to keep things moving along. Throughout the cruise I experienced good to exceptional customer service. Whether the exchange was with the cabin attendant, servers, bartenders, customer service desk, or restaurants, the experiences were very good. The two ports were a washout for any excursion I would have taken but probably were great if it was not raining. The passengers were almost all Brazilians with a scant few other South Americans. Many families were on this sailing as it was summer vacation in the Southern Hemisphere. The children on the ship were remarkably well behaved. Although it was almost impossible to enjoy the outside venues including the seating areas of the Marketplace Buffet, I never felt overly crowded except during the height of lunchtime in the Buffet areas. After chatting with various and sundry crew members (I seemed that all crew members were fluent in English), they shared that the Brazil sailings are different than in Europe. The general atmosphere of the passengers could best be described as "yay! we are on a cruise!". I truly enjoyed the Brazilian atmosphere. Music was everywhere and all different types. Of course the most popular were the live Brazilian Portuguese singers. I only saw one of the evening shows. A Tribute to Tina Turner. It was very good. All in all it was a nice short cruise despite of the rain. I must have enjoyed it because I booked another Brazilian cruise while on the ship. I would like to try an MSC sailing in the future geared towards the North American market to compare. I would share that the atmosphere of this cruise was great and cruising Brazilian style was very enjoyable!
First time on MSC. Ship is absolutely gorgeous. Food was surprisingly good and entertainment was amazing. certain things on the ship such as everything being digital took some getting used to, but overall, it was a great experience. My main negative was the bars on the ship. We had the drink package and it was a good thing as often the drinks were so poorly made, we left them unfinished. Also, the ordering of drinks was totally disorganized. This could be because it is a European ship and we Americans tend to lineup for everything so I’m not sure. The other thing that took some getting used to was the fact that at each port, people were getting on and off. For a week’s cruise with six ports, different people were getting on each of the six ports and having a one week cruise returning to that port. Cruising in the states begin and end in one port. Service was very good both for our cabin and in the main dining room. Overall, I would have no trouble booking again on this MSC cruise ship.
