We accepted the option to upgrade to a penthouse suite (fwd) on deck 10. We are 3 adults so the extra space was worth the additional cost. Further more one of our party was ill with flu and having the extra space probably saved the other two. Staff on the ship are fantastic they couldn't be any more helpful. I must give praise to the medical team who looked after the ill passenger. They were professional and followed up the "patient" and provided an excellent report for insurance and follow up appt at home. The ship is immaculate facilities are excellent. Food delightful. We cruised Japan and really enjoyed it although I admit that the 2 days at the end of the cruise in Tokyo gave us more time to explore this fabulous city (worth hiring a local guide). Despite this being an older ship we hardly felt any movement except for one evening coming into port when it wasn't very good weather. It was a bit choppy! Thoroughly enjoyed our experience, staff are brilliant and found NCL very professional. Embarkation to disembarkation well organised. We wouldn't hesitate to cruise on NCL Spirit or any NCL ship again.
We cruised on the Spirit in March and April 2025 - 22 days total, 2 back-to-back sailings. Different interior midship cabins on each leg but on same deck (10). The itinerary was wonderful. Loved every bit of Japan and saw cherry blossoms everywhere during the second leg. Did only NCL shore excursions in each port and some were of course better than others, but zero complaints about any of them and many were absolutely 5-star experiences. As to the ship itself, service was generally excellent, ship was very well maintained despite its age, and was very clean. The outdoor dining and pool area behind the buffet was our favorite. Food in specialty restaurants and main dining rooms was usually very good (Cagney's and Le Bistro were top-notch), and the Local was also good. Onda and Teppanyaki were not bad in terms of flavors and the chef in Teppanyaki was very entertaining. However, the buffet was consistently a disappointment in terms of variety, quality, and temperature of food - not up to the standard that we've enjoyed on other NCL ships. Daytime activities were few and far between, even on sea days, but nighttime entertainment was generally very good, both the production shows and the guest entertainers (singer, magician, aerialists). Ship's dancers in Ignite the Night were the best I've ever seen on a cruise ship. Atrium was not a good venue for Deal or No Deal, and the evening games were mostly pretty lackluster. Staterooms were small, as expected, but very quiet. Closet and storage space were adequate even though we brought a lot of clothes for the longer itinerary, and having USB ports next to each side of the bed was very helpful. Perhaps the most baffling factor was that on both legs our staterooms were seldom cleaned and serviced before 2pm, even with our having the "make up room" sign out by 9am, and sometimes not until almost 5. We've never experienced that before on any ship (any cruise line) where cleaning is generally completed by around noon, and it was a bit of a bother given that we'd like to either rest or start getting ready for dinner in the afternoon when we return from excursions. But all in all it was a very positive experience. I would definitely go back to Japan though would not likely choose the Spirit. But nothing was so offputting as to cause me to avoid NCL in future.
