2nd cruise to date, with our original MSC unfortunately far superior in every respect. Embarking at Barcelona was actually pretty straightforward and relatively easy. No real complaints about the stateroom except the limited space to hang clothing. Another big bear Is the $6.50 for water as no water is supplied throughout the cruise except for the machines at the dining areas. Staff have been excellent and also the food. Cagney was 1st class in every respect and the chicken wings at O’Sheehans were amazing. As for the Fleetwood Mac Rumours evening, that was easily 10/10. Exceptional. That guitarist is different planet. My only real gripe is the Waves (right hand side) bar on the 15th floor which we have tried 4 times in 4 days with the same experience. Wait, wait and wait again until the (same) staff have finished their conversation. Only to walk past you and serve the person who turned up 3 seconds earlier at the far end of the bar. I found it’s quicker to go to the 7th floor and carry up drinks in the lift. They show an arrogance you would expect in a London nightclub, so unfortunately it won’t be a bar we will visit again. All other areas have been 10/10. Still a few days to go and enjoying it so far. Lots to look forward to ( excluding Waves Bar obviously)
If you're an avid NCL cruiser like myself, the ship was great with the exception of the smell of cigarette smoke from casino and the cigar lounge. Shore excursion booked through NCL review: Ibiza - From Tranquil to Chic booked through NCL - this was a 4 hour excursion. Picked up at port driven to village of Santa Eulalia. We were at village for about 45 minutes where you can wonder around town, grab a snack, or hike up the hill to see a 16th century church. We opted for wondering about and grab snack while enjoy the Mediterranean sea around us. From the hopped back on the bus and headed to small village of Santa Gertrudis, where we had some another 30 minutes of free time. It was holy week so most shops/restaurants were closed. Hopped back on bus and headed into Ibiza town. Walked into town and headed to UNESCO site but didn't climb up to the top. You could have if wanted to stay and catch a different bus back to ship but we chose to stay with our guide. Palma (Majorca) - We booked the Hop On Hop Off bus there NCL for this port. It was great option to get on an off at all the sites. We do recommend getting off at the Pueblo Espanol (you'll have to buy tickets to get in about $10 per person) to explore. Bellver Castle was also fun and expect a line to get back on the bus but it went by quickly as buses are coming ever 15 minutes. Naples - We booked City Sightseeing Naples Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour through Viator. There are two routes, the red takes you around the city and the blue outside of the city center and a bit longer. My friends did both routes but we chose to stay in the city center. I will advise the the bus stops aren't advertised and we walked for about half an hour looking for one. We finally had to flag down a bus coming down the street to hop back on. Civitavecchia (Rome) - We booked a private tour through rome-limousines.com. It was great since we had a party of 6. We were picked up early from port, driven to Rome, shown highlights, arranged a great restaurant for lunch and tailored the excursion to what we wanted to see. Alessandro had procured tickets for us to go into Colosseum which was a must do for my group. We had a great day and we were back on ship by 5pm, which we were really concerned about. Livorno (Florence) - We booked a private tour via Viator for city tour and a Chianti tasting. Picked up at port at 8am and driven to Florence. Spent the morning walking around Florence (however they will drive you if you choose), had lunch and headed to vineyard for some wine. Livorno (Cinque Terre) - We booked this tour via NCL. We board the bus for an hour, from there we hop on a boat and dock in Vernazza where we had about 45 minutes to explore. We opted for snacking at various shops/restaurants. Hop back onto the ferry and go to Monterosso al Mare where we got a free glass of wine taste and some great focaccia bread with pesto sauce. We liked the wine so stayed to enjoy a full wine tasting. After wine and some shopping (an all about 50 minutes) we meet group to head to train stain which took us back to bus. Cannes - We booked Monaco & Monte Carlo through NCL. Left super early and got stuck in traffic for 2+ hours so we only had about 20 minutes in Monaco. From there we hopped on bus and headed to Monte Carlo, which we all regretted as Casino was closed until 2pm and with only 20 minutes (thanks to morning traffic) we couldn't even sit and eat. Lots of shops to go into if you are into all the high end name brands. No coffee shops around to get drinks/coffee so we regretted Monte Carlo, especially since we were all hungry by this time. Bus barely made it back to catch the last tender to ship. I definitely want to go back to Monaco. Maybe be too much info on what my family did for excursions but we never get to post reviews on NCL excursions on their site.
An excellent cruise. This is our 9th NCL cruise, 1st time on the breakaway. Food was exceptional (apart from Palomar as its menu choice was very limited). The embarkation was very chaotic with horrendous queues and i have to say this has been our worst embarkation in 12 years of cruising!! However - once on board everything else was really good. Clean cabin, polite and helpful staff, good food and a friendly vibe throughout the ship. Cagneys Steak house and La Cucina are amazing speciality restaurants and the Buffer always serves up good food with a decent choice from Pizza, cold meats and salads, pan-asian or indian. The entertainment was exceptional especially Burn The Floor and Red White And British. The ship was clean well maintained. The bar staff in shakers were amazing! I would strongly recommend this cruise and Norwegian whether a first timer, solo traveller or seasoned cruiser!
