More than anything, Marina personifies the Oceania Cruises experience
This was our second cruise on the Marina. We were looking forward to sailing on the ship after its refurbishment which finally took place in May 2024. We were disappointed because Oceania made a decision to not completely refurbish the ship. It was partial at best. While some public areas and restaurants were redone, not all were. The Marina lounge is an example, where all the old seating remains. Moreover, only the higher level suites were re-done. All the staterooms, up to the Concierge Level A1, were omitted. This means that the large majority of passengers on the Marina still sails in staterooms that are old, worn, tired and not very functional. Here are some examples: There are no USB ports in the staterooms, as there must be in a modern ship. Charging electronic devices is a challenge. Adapters and charging blocks are required for all devices, whether cell phones or rechargeable hearing aids. Luckily we had brought a large adapter with multiple plug types and with 2 USB A and 2 USB C ports built in. Overall, the storage provided (drawers, closet, dresser) is worn and inadequate, with access to the closet difficult from a narrow space along one side of the bed. It's not possible to store a larger (26"+) suitcase under the bed without lifting the bed to slide it under. The bathrooms are old and dated. There are very large, deep bathtubs that few, if any, passengers can use. They are slippery and difficult to get in and out. The separate showers are so small that they are a frequent topic of both humor and frustration among guests. They just don't work for most people. On another note, we found that the repetitive daily effort through ship wide announcements and advertisements to get passengers to buy additional Aquamar spa services or to purchase items from the boutiques was rather intrusive. Every day when going to the gym for exercise, it was necessary to pass by Aquamar Spa staff standing in the corridor offering trial massages or trial foot/balance impressions. The marketing effort felt quite aggressive. It didn't help that the spa services seem to be overpriced (+20%) for the industry. Food quality was a bit hit or miss, but generally was acceptable. One night we sent back a pasta dish that was cold and dry on top, clearly having sat too long. Another day, the Terrace cafe cheese tray was filled with slices that were dry and curled. They ought not to have been put out. Food choices did seem repetitive over the 18 day length of the cruise. The entertainment team (the dancers and singers, the Grace quartet, the band) were very talented and fun to watch. Lastly, we particularly want to acknowledge the staff and crew who worked hard every day to satisfy the needs of passengers. It's difficult job that they did very well.
This was an awesome experience! Cabin was very clean and the cleaning staff that we had was great. We couldn't have had better staff helping out. I just had a knee replacement and I needed to be able to ice it daily and they were extremely attentive for making sure I had what I needed when I needed. Dining was great in the Grand Dining Room and the specialty dining that we like the best was the Red Ginger. Don't get me wrong the food was great, but Reg Ginger was the tops in flavors. The Captian and Cruise director did a great job. They had a show every night at 9:15 in the Marina. For the excursions I would suggest making sure that you get them booked early. Even though I did book early, I guess that I didn't get them booked early enough. We ended up on a wait list and missed out on one that we really wanted to do was be able to get up close to see the Penguins, but we did get to see some from a distance. I would highly recommend booking for the Concierge Level due to the added perks. We enjoyed having access to the free additional free drinks and treats. The one thing that was different was the dining areas are only open at certain times, so you do have to pay close attention that that. I would suggest that they open up the pizza station for lunch because it is only open for dinner. They do have room service that is open 24 hours a day. Over all experience was wonderful and everyone was wonderful and very helpful.
Up there as one of the best holidays ever! The captain showed extraordinary navigation skills taking us to the Falklands and Antarctica. Oceania employed an enrichment team of Antarctica scientists who gave outstanding lectures throughout the cruise and moment to moment commentary from the bridge pointing out the wildlife and points of interest that would have been easily missed by the untrained eye. We opted for concierge level and would do so again, we accessed the concierge lounge several times a day to make tea (we are Brits and endless cups of tea are imperative!) 3 lots of free laundry proved very useful. food was excellent in MDR, speciality restaurants and buffet, though the buffet was small. The aquamar restaurant was a revelation, outstanding food beautifully presented. Coffee was dreadful, everywhere !! Staff to a person were lovely, friendly and helpful. Our first cruise with Oceania and it won’t be our last. The only downside was tender tickets. The issue of the tender tickets was simply not equitable, we were told that it was on a first come first served basis but this simply wasn’t true and caused some angst and flaring tempers.
We recently sailed on Marina from BA to Santiago and had the most fantastic time. The staff worked so hard to make us all feel looked after and we were always greeted with a huge smile. Despite our concierge cabin not being included in the recent refurb, we were very comfortable and there was plenty of room to empty our, 3 large!, suitcases. Captain Obad spoke to us every day keeping us informed as to the weather, ports etc and we felt in very safe hands. In fact all the staff, including the Expedition Team were wonderful and added to the general enjoyment of the cruise. Big thanks to them all including Morris and Macroy our cabin stewards and Marija who worked in Martinis. We ate at all the speciality restaurants and Polo Grill was our favourite. We also made use of the Conciere Lounge for our early morning cup of tea. Marina is a very elegant ship with of places to sit quietly and read and we would cruise with her again in a heartbeat.
