Ship Reviews

This was our fiftieth anniversary so we celebrated with this cruise, reserving suite as opposed to a concierge class veranda class. Our suite was one of two on the 7th floor and the remainder of the rooms were concierge veranda. Most suites are on the 11th floor. We appreciated the elegance of the upgrade-walk-in closet, larger bathroom, larger veranda with chaise lounges, and the extra of specialty dining choices. We felt the butler situation (although he was great) was limited by the fact that we were on a separate floor and often basic things like glassware were not replaced and we had to call and request them. There were also some basic issues when we first arrived-a noisy fan that ran continuously in the shower, which my husband finally fixed himself, difficulty getting a comfortable temperature in the room were the two main ones. We finally figured out how to make the room comfortable enough although it was often too cold or too warm. Our room cleaning staff were lovely people (Dalia was the main one) and we appreciated her care. We would have liked the toiletries to be replaced, soaps especially, but we made it work. They went to special care to decorate our room for an anniversary surprise, complete with rose petals on the bed, balloons on the ceiling and decorative towel designs. It was overwhelming when we returned after dinner! The highlights were the dinners and food in general, and we were especially pleased with the Terrace for the quick meals. The quality of food was excellent and the choices were great. We also had 4 special dinners, two at Jacques and one each at Polo Grill and Toscana. All were excellent. I took two culinary classes and thoroughly enjoyed them with Chef Eva Mulligan. I learned a lot and the learning atmosphere was fun, relaxed and very successful in our attempts to replicate her demonstrations. I came home with new favorite recipes and look forward to trying the paella. One of our favorite aspects of the Oceania cruises is the string quartet and its quality playing. We are both professional musicians and especially appreciate the diversity of the choices they play as well as the skill they use. We were able to enjoy them many times during the 10 days. We did attend the major production of the cast-an around the world revue which was expertly done, well sung and played (utilizing the string quartet as well!) and not so over-amplified that it was unpleasant, as sometimes happens in the musical shows. We enjoyed the 3 singers especially, since that is our professional field. The disembarkation was okay but continues to feel slightly confusing and crowded. Maybe signs to direct the appropriate people to certain areas would help? The only other comment I have is about the flights. Going to Barcelona from Orlando via Toronto was fine. The flights were timely and the process easy. The return from Rome ended up being a 24 hour experience from boarding a bus to the airport to arriving home from Orlando. We went through Philadelphia which required long lines in immigration and a second TSA check with long lines. I am not sure how to fix that other than get Global Entry. We flew American Airlines coming home and that may have been the best option, but it was not a fun trip. All in all, we prefer Oceania over other cruise lines which we have experienced and will continue to use them as our choice to sail. We love the intimacy and personal attention one gets as well as the friendly crew and staff. Thank you for making our special trip worthy of the fifty years of marriage!

My wife and I (70's) enjoyed our voyage through the Canary Islands, Casablanca and Spain aboard the Marina. The ships seems to have been well maintained and its size makes it easy to get around very quickly. The only inconvenience is that on rainy or cold days reaching the higher decks (14 and 15) requires you to use either the forward or aft elevators to avoid crossing from bow to stern or vice versa through the open decks. Unlike other ships, however, there is no promenade deck. It is not possible to walk completely around the ship on the outside on any deck below 14. Embarkation was easy although the line in Tenerife was about 30 minutes. We simply rolled our luggage and walked from the near-by hotel. Once aboard we found our cabin to be comfortable and there was more than enough room for our clothing. The only drawback was the very small shower (Standard Verandah Cabin). The cabin actually has two showers as it quite possible to shower in the bathtub as well. Wifi worked very well aboard but do not expect to stream movies without upgrading your service. The evening entertainment in the main theater (note: unlike larger ships the main theater is not a multi-level Broadway-style venue) was adequate and began every night at 9:15PM. We were disappointed with some of the cruise line's excursions. They did not always live up to the descriptions. We enjoyed four specialty restaurants which was included in our "package." The only drawback was the lack of availability when the reservation system opened 45 days ahead or our cruise date. I was unable to stay up until midnight (as many suggest) so by the time I went on-line (early in the morning) I was only able to find "share" tables at 6:30PM on the first two nights and the last two nights. Not ideal but ok. We had an extra sea day since one port (Cadiz) was cancelled due to the weather. The entertainment crew struggled to come up with anything other than indoor golf putting contest and a movie that was also available on demand in the cabin, but this is to be expected. We were pleasantly surprised on the last day (debarkation in Lisbon) to find we could order breakfast brought to our cabin as early as 6AM! One of our favorite activities was self laundry. This could easily be listed as an activity. Each deck has one self-service laundry (totally free!) with 3 washers and 3 dryers. So if you are thinking to catch-up on laundry on a sea day be prepared to spend time finding a machine since everyone has exactly the same idea! Overall, for us, Oceania is a great choice. Remember, a cruise is what you make it. If you are determined to have a good time you will. If you are cranky and looking for problems you will find them.
