It's been a long time since I wrote a review but after my cruise on Anthem of the Seas, I felt compelled to share my opinions. This was our first time on Anthem. Wy wife and I normally disembark cruises saying something like "that was fun; but I'm ready to sleep in my own bed." Not this time. There was something about Anthem that, to us, made her stand out from all our other Quantum Class cruises. We wanted more. I'll knock out the negatives first. I titled this review "...out of Seattle" for a reason. Bottom line up front, Seattle's Pier 91 could learn a lot from other cruise embarkation ports. The inability to drive in and drop off bags is a huge hindrance to those of us who drive to the port. Disembarking is even worse, especially with 2 ships. For those who do not know, Pier 91 is a commercial fishing pier so when 4500+ people are trying to get in while another 4500+ are trying to get out...and while the 2900+ passenger Celebrity Edge is also at the pier and doing the same rodeo...let's just say the need for patience is an understatement. Don't even get me started on the reckless drivers of the numerous black Suburban taxis who, despite the signs saying its illegal, constantly circle the lot soliciting for taxi business. The second negative came with RCI's method of placing the Sea Pass cards at the cabins. We arrived to find another couple in our room. While it was clearly their fault, it was an honest mistake due to a very similar room #. But, it took some aggressive knocking to get them to open the door, and a little bit of convincing for them to understand that they were in the wrong room. Good thing we got there in time before they went out and started exploring the ship and hitting the bars. The whole experience made me dislike the process. Luckily everything turned around.....well, one more gripe but I'll save that for a soapbox diatribe at the end. We've been sailing Quantum and Ovation to AK for the past few years and not once was there a sail away party. There was on Anthem. Led by the cruise director, Ricky Matthews, the sail away party at the outdoor pool had everyone on their feet and dancing. The activities and entertainment throughout the cruise seemed to be a notch above her sister ships. The absolute highlight was We Will Rock You. We've seen almost all of RCI's production shows and this was our clear favorite. It takes a lot to get me on my feet but when that talented lead singer broke out the "buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise..." I leapt to my feet and cheered him on, as did the rest of the theater. We enjoyed that show so much that we lined up early the next day to see it again, and with a front-row seat. Food quality was a hit on this cruise. We ate at Chops, Wonderland, Izumi, Jamie's, and Solarium Bistro. We loved all of them and returned to Chops for a second night. We only ate in the MDR for lobster night, and service was a hit. We generally avoid the dining room but if service was always this good for My-Time, we would start going back. We stayed in Obstructed View balcony cabin. For the most part, the obstruction was not as bad as I thought it would be. However, I won't do it again. What I did not anticipate was the bright lights from the deck 5 outdoor promenade lighting up the sides of the lifeboats, which lit up our balcony. It meant not being able to see out at night, and we had to keep our curtains closed in order to keep the light out of our room. Lesson learned, but I'm not complaining. I got what I paid for. That said, the room itself was perfect, and our room attendant was excellent. An advantage to driving to the port is the ability to buy duty-free liquor and if anyone reading this lives in the state of Washington, they'll know how big of a deal that is. Anthem's liquor store was in a different location than her sister ships and was significantly better stocked. We loved the bumper cars. Probably because it was September and the kid count was low, we were able to go several rounds in the bumper cars without having to go back in line. Even the sports staff jumped in and had some fun with us. You know how some things in life are great and you can't quite put your finger on it....those things that make you say, "there's just something about?" That was Anthem for us. There was just something about her. She's our new favorite ship. Now for the diatribe. This duck thing is out of control. I never really cared about this trend but, on this cruise, I saw grown adults carelessly digging through plants and at one point, I saw a lady pull out the fake grass from the dividers between the Solarium pools to look underneath. She made a mess and made no effort to replace the grass how it was. The lifeguards just watched and shook their heads. When the decor is getting ruined, it's gone too far. RCI is probably going to need to address this. I highly recommend Anthem, anywhere she is sailing. We already have her booked for 2026...twice!
