Had a great time on our Eastern Caribbean cruise last week. The ship was spotless, all of the crew was very friendly, and the food in the Windjammer (where we mostly ate) was varied, plentiful and delicious. Apparently it was a spring break week, as there were a lot of kids on board, but it really wasn't an issue. Our cabin steward was very friendly and provided us with a few extras that we asked for without any issues. The Secret Sands beach excursion on St. Thomas was a lot of fun and highly recommended. The beach was beautiful and serene and very enjoyable. The only negative on the excursion was that in addition to water and sodas that were included, there was also "endless rum punch". Not sure why this was needed on an 8:30 am beach excursion; several men took advantage of this and were very drunk and obnoxiously noisy on the ride back to the ship, which was rather unpleasant. Embarkation and disembarkation were amazingly quick and easy. We were on the ship within 10 minutes of when we arrive at 1 pm, and it took us no more than 5 minutes from when we left our cabin (doing self-assistance) to when we were off the ship. Very impressive considering there were about 6,000 passengers on board. The entertainment was a little mixed. The Voices show was very nice, and the Aqua and ice shows were great as always. However the comedians were not particularly funny, just rather raunchy. Also, the Effectors show was disappointing - lots of very impressive special effects but it was way too loud and the show had little or no plot. The best entertainment on the ship, however, was the pianist, who played and sang great classic rock songs for hours almost every evening. Finally, the Perfect Day at Coco Cay was wonderful as always! So, overall, a great vacation and one that we will likely repeat in the future!
On Balance we had a wonderful cruise, there are just nagging changes that used to make cruising special that's it just not there any more. I have been cruising for over ten years, half of that time I cruised with my now wife as a young couple and now we cruise as a married accouple with two kids, 3 YO and 7 MO. WONDER of the SEAS has more than you could ever need on a 7 night cruise. There are venues we didn't even get a chance to see on our voyage. She's massive and did feel busy. EMBARKARION We were out of our cab and on the ship in under 30 minutes, embarkation was a total breeze. ROOM We were in room away from all the craziness, perfect for us as we don't mind a walk, we had the windjammer 4 decks up and the pool deck and then the MDR 6 decks down. The only thing we was far from was adventure ocean but as my son decided it wasn't for him we didn't miss it. The room was a good size, it felt bigger than Anthem and Navigator which where my previous ships and was just about OK for the 4 of us (inc the pack and play) Our room attendant Ed was really pleasant, and nothing was to much trouble. SHIP As mentioned above this ship is packed to the rafters with things to do for the kids and Adults, my son loved the shows INTENCE at the aft was superb, so much so we saw it twice. Seasons on ice was great and also the effectors II (though it went on a bit and was the only one my son got a bit board with) We all enjoyed the pool deck, though it did get MAD BUSY on sea days and later in the afternoon when passengers returned from land. Lifeguards are on one, don't have to much fun! My son loved the playscape and he loved the Pringle climbing frame near the water theatre, he also rode the carousel 2-3 times a day and loved looking out for the lift colors, red for UP and GREEN for DOWN. I cant speak for the women but the amount of men I see having a wee (OR WORSE) and not washing their hands after the loo is frankly vial. You’re a fully grown human, sort your life out. The slides were all great fun and fast! Parents, control your kids! To many lazy ass mum and dads on sunbeds, heads in phones whilst kids create carnages in the pool and ruin everyone else experience. FOOD The MDR Breakfast was nice and a good pace, the windjammer is not a place where we like to spend to much time, mainly as I don't want to share a serving spoon with old piss fingers from the pool deck! Dinner was very average to poor. The food was always well presented but it was very bland and not what the MDR used to be, there is 100% a push to upsell into the specialty dining. Service was always great though and the dining teams in all eating venues are always 100%. We ate in upcharges at Giovani's, 150, The Mason Jar and Jonny Rockets. Jonny Rockets, good as ever you know what your getting but its now $18.50 a head! I remember when it was 8 bucks PP, good old inflation! 150 was our Fave, the food was superb, a classy setting and great service, we will return. Mason Jar was tasty and the live music was a bonus. Giovannis was just OK, The steak was really good but my wife said the Lasagna was not up to standard and was bland. WILL WE RETURN After talking to many other families on this cruise we have decided to give Disney a go on our next voyage, I’m a bit Royal Caribbean’d out for the time being! We will be back as I’m desperate to get on an ICON class but I’m not paying the fares at their current rates. Cruising has exploded in the post covid era and I’m not sure for the better. RC cutbacks to save money and much higher prices reflecting demand. Overall its less for more money but when the ships are sailing full why would they change it! For us small changes like having to find your luggage in the corridor as opposed to be being placed at your door, 1 turndown a day are just some of the small changes that for us, have a big impact.
We are very experienced RCL cruisers, 35 cruises since 2002. We have always had balcony cabins and occasionally like this cruise we opted for a Junior Suite. The larger cabin with walk-in closet and bathroom with bathtub was very nice. Our room attendant was excellent and our cabin was made up twice daily, a suite benefit. An expedited check-in is also a suite perk and was very quick. Not many more suite benefits except dining at the coastal kitchen, which we did not do because it was not made clear to us how to access this perk. My wife was pleased with the suite upgrades however I do not believe it was worth the extra cost. Overall the cruise was what we experienced two years ago on Wonder, which we weren’t thrilled with back then. We chose this cruise because it is the only port with RCL Oasis class ships that we can drive to, a very long drive. As mentioned in most of the reviews Wonder is a beautiful ship that due to RCL cutbacks and poor planning fails to meet ones expectations. We decided to skip the MDR after our last two RCL cruises and after reading other reviews we did the right thing. Specialty dining was okay but had a few major failures. Hooked was a bust, not so much for the food but for the atmosphere. Hooked is located on a balcony looking over the Solarium restaurant. The noise generated by the people in the Solarium was so loud we could barely converse at what should have been an intimate table for two. Our server was very attentive and even apologized for the noisy environment. The Solarium restaurant was reserved the entire cruise for a “Private Function” which I believe contributed to the overcrowding of the other dining venues, especially at breakfast. The Windjammer was always crowded, at breakfast, seating required an extended search, the food was never hot, the selections were limited and locating what you wanted was not easy. The servers were overwhelmed by the crowd. We tried the MDR for breakfast and encountered a long line and wait times. We had breakfast two mornings at Johnny Rockets but found the menus limited. Our favorite restaurant was Chops. We were fortunate to be seated in a quiet area each night, and the service was very good. Giovannis was good but nothing exceptional, the quality of Italian food one would find in a chain Italian restaurant at home. 150 Park Avenue was different but again not outstanding, with weird offerings. Being a big dessert fan the cheese cake and hot chocolate cake at Chops, and the tiramisu at Giovanni’s were the only real standouts for the entire week. We ordered the continental breakfast from room service the morning we arrived in St. Thomas. We requested the 7:30-8:00am time. After waiting until almost 9:00am we started to go out and get breakfast when we encounter the room service attendant coming down the hallway with our breakfast. He said they were late because everyone ordered breakfast at the same time. No apology, nothing. In the past room service has always been very timely, calling to let us know it was on it’s way or notifying us of any delay. The Ice Show was by far the best entertainment for the week. The comics were okay and the headliner juggler was very good. As usual the full ship’s “orchestra” was great. The band in the music hall was average at best and we never saw that area crowded during the entire cruise. “Voices” is an interesting show but having singers performing with a sound track and recorded singers leaves no room for real creativity. “The Effectors” is interesting only for the technology, which failed for twenty minutes during the show we attended. The story line is something from a poor comic book and not really riveting. It is also extremely loud, according to my wife’s Apple Watch, dangerous and harmful to your hearing. The water show was missing a few acts. There was no high wire walker and the aerial performers that soared over the audience were also missing. I do not know what the title is for this show but if I had to give it one it would be “Twenty Angry Women Splashing In Water With Sticks”. The fantastic divers and the acrobatic performance on the straps strung over the pool were the only real exceptional talent displayed during this show. It doesn’t take a lot of talent to synchronize a group of “dancers” waving various sized sticks while looking fierce and angry. It was also extremely loud. On day 2, Monday, the Presidential Inauguration took place. Obviously this event as not significant enough to RCL to have a location on the ship where people could gather together to watch it. On the last day at sea they did have a tribute to veterans, first responders and medical personnel. It was very nice and actually a little more than expected and very much appreciated. Disembarkation was a breeze. We are able to roll our own luggage so we were off the ship and to our car by 7am. When we booked this cruise we intentionally selected a time when schools are in session believing that there would be a reduced number of children on board. We have Grandchildren, spend as much time as we can with them, have hosted numerous parties and events at our home for them, their friends and events for their schools. So, being around children is not a problem for us. What we have noticed is that RCL appears to have changed its marketing to attract more families with children. In doing this RCL has failed to plan for the chaos that is part of having a thousand or more children running around with little or no supervision. It seems that there is no plan by the staff to control behavior or enforce rules such as no children in the Solarium. It is a daunting task, especially when dealing with many of today’s parents, but there must be more done so everyone can have a pleasant vacation, even if it means directly confronting parents who choose to allow their children to misbehave. It also was surprising to see so many infants, children under 2 years old, and the accompanying multi seat strollers were on board. My guess is that the strollers out numbered the power chairs by a very wide margin. You were more likely to be unable get into an elevator because of strollers than a power chair on this cruise. Best to stick to the stairs. This will most likely be the last time we go on Wonder. In the future we will go back to those Oasis class ships that still have broadway shows, like Allure with Mama Mia, and still book at a time when hopefully children will be at school.
