Ship Reviews

My last cruise on SeaDream 2 was pre-Covid. The ship has had a major refurbishment and looks well with a few additional features. Sun beds on the top deck and a waterslide which deposits you straight into the sea. All the other water toys, jet skis etc are still there. The cabins have new fixtures and fittings and soft furnishings but remain basically the same. We had a large window, not portholes. The shower room remains compact and really only space for one. The big disappointment for me was the quality of food. Very few of the original signature dishes are now served at dinner. The choice of canapés is nothing to what it used to be, in fact I'd say the choice is poor and we never partook. Even having put in a special request for breakfast items at the time of booking and being confirmed these were not available. The staff onboard are always helpful and polite and within hours get to know you by name. The ports of call were as you'd expect with a small ship able to get up close and personal instead of docking miles away. Overall I'd say the product is now expensive for what it offers.

This was our third trip with Seadream. Before I get to more comments, I think that it is important to realize that SD is very different than a traditional cruise and quite different from most other luxury lines. It lacks many of the amenities of larger ships many of which we also enjoy. But, it also offers a level of relaxed intimacy and service that few can match. The recent remodel has certainly addressed many of the past criticisms that the yachts felt dated and worn. The cabins are more spacious and brighter (although the bathrooms remain essentially the same). The new decking throughout also brings a welcomed updated look. The level of service is exceptional and the cuisine is way beyond what you would expect on a vessel with 100 guests. The ports we visited in the Caribbean were absent large ships or crowds and continued the theme of relaxed elegance. The size of the yachts lends itself to a social environment where guests mix and mingle regularly. Most are well traveled, have interesting backgrounds and are friendly. But none of this feels forced or pretentious. On board activities are limited but the new cruise director has added a few on board activities like trivia, Zumba, etc. The water sports marina is great and the new slide into the ocean from the pool deck is a blast.

SeaDream II 2023 Fall Crossing This is a review of the second Atlantic crossing that I've experienced on SeaDream II. The crossing began on November 26, 2023, in Lisbon Portugal, and ended on December 9, 2023 in St. Maarten. This crossing was about two weeks later than my previous fall crossing. 44 guests, and 93 crew on-board. The Weather Normally I wouldn't include weather conditions in my review, but because the crossing was 2 weeks later than usual, I thought it best to touch on the subject. Arriving in Lisbon, it was a shock as to how cold it was! Coming from the Tampa Bay area of Florida, November dates don't usually conjure up thoughts of cold weather. Thank goodness I checked “weather.com” prior to packing! The cool weather (around 60 degrees F) parlayed into a day of rough seas at the beginning of the voyage. Glassware needed to be secured in the suite and all other areas of the ship. The rough seas were a surprise, but not totally unexpected, (embarking two weeks later in the season.) Eventually the weather turned warm, the seas grew calm, and visions of rough waves and cold weather were in our rear-view mirror. First Impressions For a Super Yacht, built in 1985, she still has that majestic quality that stands out, even in today's standards, The warm glow of freshly refinished teak, new carpeting and fabrics in the Main Salon and classic color combinations make for an inviting first impression. Enough of the ship itself. What makes the true impression is the ship's staff. Smiling faces, warm “Hello's” and “Welcome back's” abound. Several veteran staff such as Anton, Jesse (with his one-of-a-kind eye glasses), Jonel (with his infectious smile), and my stewardess, Ed, who took great care of my suite while aboard. Some of the new staff (to me, at least), included Michela, Sanny, Dean and Brad. (All gems to the trade) Entertainment If you are a lover of Vegas shows, Circuit dance parties and mid-night buffets, this is definitely not the yacht for you! On SeaDream the “entertainment” is subdued. Team Trivia is a favorite among the crossing crowd, and Gareth, the associate Cruise Director, knows how to keep the contest fun, and challenging, without letting the guest antics get out-of-hand! The lecturer, Diane Lake, was quite engaging throughout the voyage, offering talks on Travel writing, Vincent Van Gogh, and her experience as a screen writer for the Oscar winning film “Frida”. A new SeaDream record for “walk-a-mile” was reached, with 101 laps around the ship! There were some super-fit crossers among us! (Especially Natasha, Chantal and Francois!) Most days you could watch a film in the Main Salon, socialize at The Top of the Yacht Bar, or just relax in the sun and enjoy the never-ending drink service, Evian spray, or even getting your glasses cleaned! Sleeping under the stars was a real treat. There are 9 total beds that you can reserve, and the bed at the front of the ship, being the most coveted. I reserved this bed towards the end of the cruise, and slept like a baby for 8 hours! A magical experience, that put good use to the personalized pajamas that is given to each guest. Dining The food on SeaDream is top-notch, and will rival any land-based restaurant. Breakfast and lunch has a fixed menu, with daily specials to choose from. Dinner is an experience on its own. Weather permitting, dinner is usually served Alfresco, or Topside, whichever word works best for you. Several courses are available to choose from, and the entree is served under a silver dome.“For your dining pleasure”. On this cruise I was lucky enough to sail with a gentleman who had the most days on-board. He had a standing special order of lamb “lollypops” The best I've ever tasted! The lamb was available for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Although I'm not much of a dessert person, I'm told they were excellent! Spa I received a $200 spa credit to use onboard. This means that the $200 can only be used in the spa, and is not valid for any other purchase or gratuity. I used $150 of the credit on 2 back massages. They were excellent, and spa money well spent. Because I didn't use $50 of the credit, the credit balance was on the debit portion of the final bill. This can be a bit confusing, first glance, but makes sense, as I was credited the full $200, and had to “return” the difference. A small gym, sauna and steam were available. The “Spa girls” were very friendly, talented and professional. Marina, Toys and Caviar in the Surf Because this was a crossing, the typical beach party, and marina day were not possible. They did, however, make the best of the situation by having the Caviar on the pool deck. Luckily, on the final day of the cruise, the Marina was available for swimming and climbing onto the water trampoline. In port, the Caviar in the Surf and Beach Bar-b-Que is quite a scene. (Banana boat, zodiacs, wave runners and the coveted slide are available for use) SeaDream goes beyond expectations on crossings, offering an alternative to the Beach party. Evening After-Dinner Fun Many guests choose to retire to their suites after dinner, but others are looking for some after-dinner fun! The Piano Bar is always a good bet. George, the talented singer and accompanist was available for Karaoke every night. No matter your singing ability, fun is had by all! Adjacent to the Piano Bar is a small casino. The casino is basically a black jack table. Previous cruises, the casino was very popular among the guests. This cruise, not so much. I can only attribute the lack of activity due to the fact that the Dealer didn't seem to enjoy her job. At one point, early on, she made a blatent dealer error and then tried to move on without rectifying her mistake. I happened to call her on it, and the chips were re-distributed to the guests at the table. This should never happen, and unfortunately the casino play was affected for the duration of the cruise. Some Final Thoughts This was an unique cruise. It started 2 weeks later, hence the cold weather at the beginning of the cruise. Only 44 guests can either make or break your cruising enjoyment. Being a solo traveler and sitting back and watching “the human condition” play out, it was an eye opening experience. I had the opportunity to dine with the Captain (Michael), and the Cruise Director (Nick). Both dinners were very enjoyable, and lent the opportunity to meet fellow guests, along with our dinner hosts. Was this a perfect cruise? No. Was this a cruise that was given some lemons (weather etc.) and made into lemonade? Yes. I've signed up for the spring crossing on SeaDream II. Enough said.

We took this cruise with 4 other couples. We had always wanted to travel through Croatia. My husband and I were amazed at the level of service and quality of food on this ship. The staff was incredibly friendly and eager to be at your beck and call. The Captain was extremely engaged with the staff as well as the guests and made it his goal to spend time with every guest on the ship. The rooms were small but very clean and well-appointed. The bathrooms would have been difficult for a larger person to use. The attendant for the room was friendly, and helpful, and did an excellent job. The gym had everything you needed, but it was small and warm in the afternoons as the direction we were traveling had the sun beating down on the windows making it hard for the A/C to keep up. The spa was fantastic! Everyone on the ship raved about the massages and facials. The concierge was very helpful and knowledgeable about the areas we were traveling. The tender operators were kind, helpful, and communicated with us to be sure we know where and when to be there in returning to the boat on time.
